Hello, all!!

My name is Linda Burge and I am new here.  I am researching my Burge name and had done some previous work on another site and got back as far as 1545 England. That is where I hit a roadblock.  I am going to be working on my tree here and if anyone can offer any help or has any other information on my family, it would be greatly appreciated and I will reciprocate as best I can!  I am originally from Ohio, but moved a year ago to the Spokane, Washington area.  I look forward to hearing from you and helping out in any way I can!  Thanks!

Welcome to Wikitree!  I added a record of your grandparents wedding.  I used Family Search to find that record and there are more.  Family Search is also a free site which is quite useful to find records for your family.  From any profile you can click on the second column of the drop-down menu and select Research and then Family Search.  (They might ask you to create an account but it is also free and very worthwhile).  Best of luck!
What was the name of your ancestor who was in England in 1545? Do you have the county and or city? Is 1545 their birth year, marriage year or death year?
All I got was that M. Burge was born in 1545. I'm going under the assumption that he was born in Somerset, England, as most of his descendants were. There was no other info that I could find other than his son was Robert Burge born in 1571. There is no info on a spouse for M. Burge or his parents.
Thank you so much Vincent!  I had originally started all my digging on ancestry, but they got to be more than I could afford. I think this site is going to be so much better as we all can help each other and find things. I could sit and do this for hours!!
Me as well.  When I mentioned Family Search, just use that site to search for records and not the family trees that are posted there (although there can be some good hints in them, they're not 100% accurate).

Here's a free site with many surname histories:

Last name: Burge

SDB Popularity ranking: 5547

This unusual and interesting name is of early medieval English origin, and is found particularly in the counties of Somerset and Dorset. It is a topographical surname denoting residence near a bridge, derived from the Old English pre 7th Century word 'brycg', bridge, with the typically southern English transposition of the 'u' and 'r'. There are several placenames in various parts of southern England which exemplify this variant, and one William atte Brugge, recorded in the Hertfordshire Hundred Rolls in 1302 lived at 'Burge End'.In some cases 'Burge' may be a variant of 'Burke', which is also topographical and denotes residence by a fort or castle, derived from the Middle English 'bure, burk', a development of the Old English 'burh, burg', fort. The marriage of Thomas Burge and Margaret Chead was recorded at North Petherton, Devonshire, on October 15th 1573. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert de la Burge, which was dated 1200, The Hampshire Pipe Rolls, during the reign of King John, known as 'Lackland', 1199 - 1216. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Welcome!

You have found G2G, a great resource.

When I first joined, I found it, er, helpful, to go through the help pages, although it’s a bit much to do at one sitting https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Help_Index
