Is the word WELF used as a title or first name and how do you know?

Question

as in Welf von Bayern (0770-0825)  I have a list of titles that says it means Duke..

Welf was a first name that later became a dynastic surname.

Guelph is the same thing in a different language.  Presumably Welf was Latinized as Guelphus and Guelph was backformed from that (by historians, not in real life).

I doubt if Counts of Andechs go back that far.  Presumably this one is a duplicate of

MedLands cites a source saying he had two names, Etiko and Welf, but this doesn't seem to get much credence. 

Practically everything round here seems to be "uncertain".

Thank you RJ Horace...  I used that name because when I did a search on wikitree I used the one word, WELF, and nothing else.   This and a few others came up so I just "built" on that one name.  That name doesn't appear anywhere on my tree.. it was just a result of a search.

I truly appreciate all this information.   Now I have to figure out WHERE I found the other information (Welf = Duke) but I think it was probably from my early days of doing genealogy and was suckered into using Ancestry.  Also some of our tree research was done by my BIL and were taken right from Ancestry.   Yes.. we definitely take his "sources" using Ancestry with a huge dose of salt.

Somewhere in this world of the internet I did answer and I thanked everyone.   I did look up all of these suggestions and answers before posting the question.    However I had a page of the unofficial royals with a GLossary of German Noble and Royal Titles sometime ago and had Welf=Duke added at the bottom.    I WILL remove that and take these other suggestions as fact.
