Do you have ancestors who immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640?

At WikiTree, this time period is covered by the Puritan Great Migration Project (PGM), although not everyone who immigrated during the time frame was a Puritan.

There are several ways to participate in the PGM Project.

A. Acknowledge. To acknowledge that you have ancestors who immigrated 1621-1640, place this sticker on your own profile: PGM Ancestor Name. (Copy and Paste to your profile. Replace the highlighted area with your ancestor's information.)  For example: William Swift

B. Be Informed & Learn. Do you want to improve your understanding of PGM-era profiles and know what’s going on with the project? Are you new to WikiTree, and think you might want to join the project in the future? Read the Project page. Follow the G2G tag  pgm .

C. Contribute Do you love puzzles, enjoy research and improving sourcing on profiles? Then you might want to actively participate in the improvement of PGM profiles. As common ancestors to so many generations, these profiles often have duplicates needing merging, and incorrect data that needs sourcing and correcting. If this interests you, please read the Project page to find out more details. Follow the tag  pgm , and request the badge by posting an answer to this question. Please include a link to a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing. NOTE: After receiving your badge, you will be asked to join the PGM Google Group, which is one of the tools project volunteers use to track PGM profiles.

Hint! it is absolutely a pre-requisite of improving PGM profiles that you know how to work with and create inline citations.

Thank you

I noticed this article recently

https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-newsletter-v1-25/image?pageName=1&volumeId=21154

that states Anderson's PGM project ends in 1643. Have I been wrong in my recollection that the Wikitree project only goes to 1640?

The PGM project only goes to 1640. Maybe Jillaine and I will have to scratch our heads together, but I have to say we have quite enough with end of 1640.
Thank you for pointing out the article on PGM end.

Now that Jillaine and I have both read the article, I can address the comment. We've decided that for the moment the Wikitree project will continue to end at those who arrived by 1640 with a little "wiggle" room. The project is quite big enough now without adding another few years to the parameters.
Sounds good.
Hi Anne,

I have an ancestor or two on my Brick Wall list.  I would like to join the PGM project as I seem to have a number of ancestors in there.  I spent the other day collecting information on the parents of Hammelsbach-1.  However, I want to sort thru the information and go back on Ancestry.  I also printed the profiles of others that were missing one or more parents the other day to see if I can find them.

The parents of Maria Barbara (Hammelsbach) Happolt

Profile Hammelsbach-1 her parents are Susann Werlings and Joannes Adamus Himmelsbach.  I want to review all the information as there are so many different ways they are spelling the same names

Taylor

Taylor, please answer the question and provide the ID or URL for a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing.

If I have more than one Puritan ancestor, how would you code it?

[[WikiTree-ID

Or

PGM Ancestor Name

PGM Ancestor Name

Thanks!

Hi Norman, the first way doesn't work. So you have to do each one. If I listed all my PGM ancestors, they would take up a lot of space on my profile, so I picked my favorite ancestor and used

Nathaniel Turner and more
Does "closed" mean I can't join the project. Have a few qualify ancestors. One has been proven by the NSSDP.

Hi Ellen, thank you for your interest. This is just an older question. You can go to the new question to join New Question

I have a number of ancestors who were part of the Puritan Great Migration and I am interested in joining to help ensure the profiles are accurate as well as to get assistance with some of my own ancestor profiles.  I am particularly interested in Anne Mayo (Mayo-59) my 6th great grandmother.  I will likely adopt her profile but may need some assistance before doing so.  I have contributed around 3000 profiles to WikiTree and I am pre-1700 certified, a sample is Benjamin Safford (Safford-379).

Because I have ancestry to the Mayflower passengers William White and his wife Susanna (Jackson) and their son Resolved, also to John Alden and Priscilla (Mullins), I have many ancestors who married into these families. A clump of these related ancestors settled in Connecticut, and I recently noticed that one of them, Nathaniel Baldwin (Baldwin-523), married Joanna Skidmore (Unknown-203519), whose ancestry has not yet been determined. Both Nathaniel and Joanna's profiles are in the PGM project, and so I would like to join in order to collaborate with this research. Likely other projects would become evident, as well, and lead to more intriguing research.

I am currently working on the profile of Sarah (Baldwin-5642) Stanley and that of her husband Nathaniel Stanley, which drew my attention since it doesn't exist yet, and you are welcome to follow the progress. Sarah is the grandmother of my fourth great-grandmother Betsey Brownell Hill, who has been a primary focus of research for years, and I have a facebook group dedicated to this research.

I have many ancestors who came over during that time period, but since I’m technologically challenged, I can’t figure out how to add myself to the project. I’ve always lived in the south shore of Massachusetts in the area of Plymouth and Hingham where my ancestors settled in the 1600’s.
by Carol Kelly G2G5 (5.3k points)

I've responded to another of your messages, to tell you to come here. LOL. You found us and you answered the question. so far so good. The reason why you can't figure out how to "add yourself to the project" is because someone else (me usually) has to add you. I need one other thing from you.

Please include a link to a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing.

Thank you.

Researching early colonial roots is very rewarding and informative. Discovering where our ancestors lived is one thing, but learning how they lived and how they interacted with people around them and what they contributed to history is the most exciting aspect of genealogical research.

Being relatively new to Wikitree, I know that I am just touching the surface of what is available to me and the amount of collaboration that takes place.

Please look at my great grandfather's profile that I createdhttps://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Raymer-333

Thanks in advance for your consideration .

Ron

Very nice profile, mostly good sources. I see you haven't yet mastered Wikitree inline citations. You will need to understand them before working on early (pre-1700) ancestors and Puritan Great Migration profiles . Directions. If you have questions ask.

Welcome to the Project.

Thanks for the acceptance to the project. I have revised the profile to proper inline citations.

Let me know if there is anything else I need to do.

Thanks

Ron
Excellent!
Hi Ron would you send me a private message please. I want to invite you to the google group. Thank you.

looking forward to your reply

My wife's ancestors came over on the Mayflower, unfortunately she past away and she had no comunication with her mother's family for a long time, and although she was in the Daughters of the American Revolution as was her mother, I am not sure if my (our) son would fit into this group.

Help!
by James Brooks G2G Astronaut (1.4m points)
Hi James, There is a good chance that if your wife had ancestors on the Mayflower and in the American Revolution that she also had ancestors who were part of the Puritan Great Migration. The Puritan Great Migration Project covers the men and women who migrated to the New England States between 1620 and 1640. There isn't an easy path to discover this (no magic wand). It needs to be built starting with your wife and working backwards to her parents, grandparents, etc. If you don't know where or how to start. The DAR keeps records. You could probably contact them, for a copy of your wife's or mother in law's application.
Thank you Anne, I'll start there. We also know the names that match up with the Mayflower passenger list,

William Brewster,  possibly of Nottingham,

Mary Brewster, wife

Love/Truelove Brewster 9 year old son(Leiden)

Wrestling Brewster, 6 year old son, ( Leiden)

Possibly members of the Leiden, Holland Congregation, that should help speed things up.
My husband is related to William Brewster. I have the newest silver book. If you need some look ups.
Thank you again, my wife's family became the Brewster-Garrett's of Madison County, Iowa.

Just as a side bar, her father was a Handel, of the composer.

May I ask, what is the silver book?

James
The silver books are the official books published by the Mayflower Society (some are pink). https://www.themayflowersociety.org/shop/books-publications/silver-books-and-mfip/elder-william-brewster-volume-24.html
I'll give it a try. Thanks again

I would like to join the PGM, my ancestor was Brian Pendleton,my 9th great grandfather. His profile is Pendleton-146. I would like to know more about him, his life, wife, children, his ancestors, for accurate information and for his descendants. I may have others but have not confirmed any information yet. I have been doing wiki-tree and other ancestry pages and have become fascinated with the detective like quality of the work, and how you can get lost in it for hours. This is a profile I have added for my Family tree, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pendleton-2095. This is my great grandfather and also a direct descendant of  Brian Pendleton. My dad has developed Alzheimers and is no longer able to answer all of my questions. I would like to know all the things that he accomplished, my daughter has found some in the New England Historical Society but I want to know more, about their trip across the ocean and personal things like that. I may never know about all these long ago great grand parents but I want to try.

This is my profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pendleton-2090. I have done the pre-1700 quiz, I am willing to ask questions and learn the right way to do this and have read the information that we were directed to read. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Cheryl Pendleton Knepper

I am a descendant of Jonathan Gillett, Sr (Gillette-26) and I have an interest in the founders of Windsor, CT. I would love to help resolve issues and duplicates by joining the PGM project. I have started working back through my own tree to do just that.  Elsewhere in my tree I have been able to add connections such as Gillett-2112 to aid others who have Gillette connections.
by Matt Gillette G2G Crew (410 points)

Matt,  per the instructions above: Please include a link to a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gillett-2112

As noted above, this is a profile I created to help another Gillette in adding to their tree. Still trying to figure out where the common connection is.

Sorry I missed the mention of Gillett-2112, and my power was out all day yesterday.

I've been contributing to PGM for some time.  I have access to some English parish registers (the only true source) via ancestry.com and continue to contribute that way on PGM profiles.

I do not seem to have the PGM badge??? Does it matter anyways ?
by Beryl Meehan G2G6 Mach 4 (41.1k points)
Hi Beryl, no it doesn't really matter if you have the badge or not, but you are a regular contributor and a valued member. You now have the Puritan Great Migration badge.

I would like to join the Puritan Great Migration Project.  I have read the posted instructions and plan to bring all the sites I have edited up to the WikiTree standards.  I have enjoyed learning how to document appropriately.  I adopted the profile of Martha Ames-372 that was imported by someone through another location.  I believe I have edited it correctly and welcome feedback.  I am working on a deceased friend's genealogy and my own.   Martha Ames. I hope you accept me.
by Dawn Hartzell G2G1 (1.1k points)
Welcome to the Puritan Great Migration Project (PGM or pgm). You've done a nice basic job, no junk sources, and have done the inline citations correctly.

Your way is fine, but I would make the children into a list (traditionally at the end of the profile). The # sign in the front makes a numbered list in Wikitree markup. Then, if I easily available, I would add some fact about each child, say born or married

#Nathan, b. xxxx
#Sarah, m. so and so
#Martha,
#Rebecca,
#Bithiah,
#Mary
#Zilpah
Thank you!  I will try that.

Hello, I am new to Wikitree but old to genealogy.  I've been working on my tree for 45 years.  I would like to join the Puritan Great Migration group.  I'm really wanting to locate Benjamin Butterfield's family in England.  I know this family isn't from Yorkshire/Halifax because it has been researched to death and no one finds this family in that area. (Lots of wrong info out there that keeps getting repeated including my own) I'm heading south and betting on this family being down closer to London.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Butterfield-109

He and Ann (maiden name not known) were married in England about 1630.  I've added several children and their birth/baptism records.  I'd loved to follow the clues and break-through on this family.
by Sue Picard G2G Crew (380 points)

HI Sue, Working on early ancestors requires a certain amount of knowledge of the workings of WikiTree. You need to be able to understand what's already on profiles. Butterfield-109 is a fairly good example of  the things needed to work on these profiles. For instance learning inline citations. You don't need to be part of the project to edit profiles, but you do need to have good sources and know how to show them.

If you're really interested in finding Butterfield-109's parents you might want to try the England Project, since that's where you will find them.

If you're still interested in joining the Puritan Great Migration Project and want to work on profiles of immigrants between 1620 and 1640, Please include a link to a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing.

Anne, thank you for the input.  I will continue to use the site and forget the projects for now.  I've been reading all the help links and correcting,  if I've been adding things wrong. I'm also looking up how-to's as I go.

Here is a view of another ancestor.  I've added completely, showing how I'm sourcing etc. This line also takes me into New England.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ransom-1276

I may join England in the future but as for now I'd rather work on Puritan's but I'll just continue to input my data and learn.  I'm enjoying that anyway. Thanks.
Caleb has a fine start. Reading the help pages etc. is invaluable. That's what I did. G2G has a lot of interesting questions and answers when you're new also.

Re: sticker --

If you have multiple PGM ancestors, do you list all of them?  Commas?  Semi-colons? Different sticker for each?

Thanks
by Sandi Strong G2G6 Mach 2 (27.8k points)
Mine says I'm a descendant of "Nathaniel Turner and others" Lot's of folks use a different sticker for each, or you can add other names to one sticker, but they won't have a link. If you want the link, one name per sticker. Or you could put one sticker and a list elsewhere on your profile. Almost anything goes on your own profile. Have fun.
Thanks!

My name is Donald Herbert Daniels.  Puritan Rev. Thomas Hooker is my 10x GGF.   He arrived in 1633 on the Griffin. Separatist Deacon Samuel Fuller is my 8X GGF who arrived in 1620 on the Mayflower.    I am interested in their religious practices, writings, and links between the two families.   I edited the profile for Samuel Newton after discovering he had a second wife Sarah (Welch) Fowler who I now know to be my ancestor and mother of Abner Newton   https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Newton-990

by Don Daniels G2G6 (8.4k points)

Hi Don, The Puritan Great Migration Project is looking for members who want to actively participate in improving PGM profiles, not necessarily just your ancestors. Standards are high. We are looking for persons with access to quality sources, who understand Wikitree style guidelines. That's why we ask that you Please include a link to a profile you've created or edited that demonstrates your understanding of WikiTree editing generally, and PGM guidelines, research and sourcing. Your edit of Newton-990 is insufficient to show this.  As a new member you might want to become more familiar with Wikitree before you join PGM.

You can, however, still edit PGM profiles. Just make sure that you add sources (use inline citations) when you edit profiles. If you think a change is major or controversial please leave a comment on the profile first.

Thank you for your response.  I will not be joining PGM as your response indicates my knowledge of the Puritan and Separatist tradition is too narrow for what you are seeking.
Sorry, I didn't mean to give you the impression that I thought your knowledge of the Puritan and Separatist tradition is too narrow. I'm quite certain that your Mayflower knowledge is better than mine. I was only implying that your grasp of Wikitree styles and standards probably needed some more experience.

I would like to find more on my Rowley roots in Massachusetts, Leiden, and England. My ancestor Henry Rowley came from England possibly on the "Speedwell".

I also have Mayflower connections through my Fuller ancestors, many of whom inter-married.

Here is the profile I used as a starting point for both ancestors and descendants: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rowley-3464

Thank you for your consideration

Hi, I finally found a line that reaches back to the migration and I'd like to join the project.

Here are a few profiles I've written:

Benjamin Hasty II (abt. 1769 - 1840)
John Miller Sr. (1758 - 1819)
Marjry "Maria" (DeGraff) Miller (1792 - 1872)
Mary (Warren) Hasty (abt. 1775 - abt. 1864)
Reinholt (Abendschon) Obenchain (1725 - bef. 1783)
Ruth Violet Lenore (Herling) Ranck (1919 - 2007)
Samuel H. Baty (abt. 1830 - 1912)
William (Claiton) Clayton Sr. (bef. 1632 - bef. 1689)

Hi, I would like to join the PGM project and begin improving some of the profiles of my direct ancestors who were PGM immigrants, which include at least William BassettRobert ElwellDaniel Abbott, and others.  I am especially interested in adding sources, historical color, details of service in King Phillips War, and about the Salem Witch trials.  Here are a few examples of profiles I have built for other ancestors in my family tree:  Joshua Leland ShayHenry McHenry and Frank Egersitz.  Thank you!  I look forward to working with you all on this project.

by Scott McClain G2G6 Mach 3 (31.3k points)

Nice work Scott. Welcome to Puritan Great Migration Project. I have a suggestion to improve your profiles. Add a sourced list of children at the end of the bio. Example. I realize there is a list in the data section, but what if all the children haven't been created, or someone comes along and decides to add or delete a child. This is traditionally the way a genealogical biography is written.

Thank you Anne, very helpful.  I will start incorporating a list of children like that in all of my profiles.

I'm interested in joining the PGM project. I'm primarily interested in adding sources to and reformatting profiles of my ancestors, though I'll also do the same for profiles I am researching. I've previously cleaned up and reformatted the profile of PGM George Stocking in October, and have worked on a number of other PGM profiles, most recently Edward Convers(e) and Sarah (Curtis?) Woodcock. Other profiles which I have majorly contributed to are John Sims and Moses Stocking. I also plan to get the pre-1500 certification to similarly clean up and source profiles for ancestors of PGM profiles who just touch into the 1400s.

by Lisa Wilson G2G1 (1.8k points)

Welcome to Puritan Great Migration Project. Do you know how to create inline citations? It is absolutely necessary to learn this skill before you edit Puritan Great Migration and other early ancestors. Each fact or statement you add to these profiles should be accompanied by a source. If you have questions please ask.

I am a descendant, through my Grandfather, of Robert Stetson/Stitson/Stutson of Cohasett, Massachusetts who eventually settled in what is now Norwell, Massachusetts. He arrived in the early days, and there are a few things, like DNA research, where I need access.

Thanks

I am interested in improving my understanding of PGM-era profiles.  As such, I have placed the tag pgm on my profile and placed a sticker to show I am a descendant of Denslow-45 PGM ancestor Nicholas Denslow.   The profile for James Rutherford is a profile I have edited that demonstrates my understanding of Wikitree editing.  Please accept my request to join this project.  As instructed, once I am accepted, I will join the Google group for this project.  Thank you.
