Why are there two pages for a 'completed merge'?

I am new to Wiki Tree and confused by a 'completed merge'.  Is it normal for two pages and numbers to still exist for the so-called 'completed merge'?

The two ID's are Vercoe-13 and Vercoe-121

The profile Vercoe-121 was merged into Vercoe-13. So if you click on Vercoe-121 it will automatically show the merged profile of Vercoe-13.

I see now that it converts to Vercoe-35 now - thanks.  So the merged number never really disappears to be reassigned then?  I found a reference to 121 and clicked on it and didn't notice it had converted.  I will have to be aware of which numbers are the right ones when linking to other profiles in my bio's then.
On Wikipedia they sometimes rename an article, but you don't get broken links, because when you go to the old name, you get redirected to the new one.  WikiTree has the same feature. Yes it does mean that old numbers don't get recycled.
