Any easy way or anyone wanting to work to 'fix' the Kirkland line that went to SC & AL?

I just recently came across WikiTree.  I have spent the last day working to add and/or correct information on many individuals.  One of my lines is the KIRKLAND family that descends from Richard & Mary Kirkland in Maryland and Virginia and goes down thru the lines thru Orangeburgh & Edgefield, SC and then on to Alabama.

I have done a lot of research on this line.  Also, Dr. J.R Peacock spent several years researching this particular Kirkland family, going to the various states involved and looking at thousands of historical records and documents.  In 2002, he published his research in an excellent book entitled "Kirkland Family Roots".

There are close to 1,000 Kirklands on Wikitree.  All of them are NOT from the above mentioned line.  However, I have come across so many duplicates and inaccuracies in this Kirkland line.  Is there a way, other than contacting each and every manager, to clean this up?

what a daunting task. I think your best first step is to start merging. To keep things working correctly in the background, merges should go into the lowest ID. When you propose a merge, e-mails are sent to all profile managers of both profiles.

Arborists I've worked with in the past also recommend working from the furthest back forward on merges.

I'll take a look at Richard profiles and see if I can give you a "for example" with him. I've also tagged the question so it will show up in the G2G feed for anyone watching the arborists tag.

Cheers, Liz

hmm. not really an easy explanation. I did a search for Richard Kirkland, which gave me a list of 23. Then I clicked the "show merging and matching options" in order to have the WikiTree IDs visible. In the sample list below, Kirkland-106 is the lowest (it's actually the lowest of all 23 IDs), so duplicate Richard Snowden Kirklands b 1728 would be merged into Kirkland-106. By clicking the boxes, you can compare profiles from the search page.

Does that help?

Thanks, Liz.  I just thought perhaps there was a way to do this without merging one by one.  As mentioned, being new here I am just starting to learn how things work.  I had to look for 'arborist' to see what you meant.  That is exactly what needs to be done.  I see I can't apply to help in that respect until I've been active on site for three months.

I've started recommeding merges to people as well as asking to be included on trusted lists.  I will, for now, hope that others will work with me to try and get this family in better shape.

Thanks again,

Darlene
