The purpose of the Finland Project is to enhance the quality of Finnish profiles to the best they can be - by adding proper sources, location categories, writing and translating biographies, merging duplicates, working on suggestion lists, maintenance categories and help unconnected profiles to connect to the big tree that is WikiTree.

If you'd like to actively contribute to the goals of the project and join, please sign up via G2G today. Please make sure you are logged in using your WikiTree id and use the answer feature, not comments. That way we can be sure that we can reach you with your welcome message.

We regret that we will not able to carry out research on behalf of others, and therefore ask that you instead take it to the G2G forum where a bigger crowd of knowledgeable and helpful people can see your question. We do however have help pages on how you can start researching Finnish church books yourself.

Mitähän tähän pitäisi vastata? Olen kiinnostunut suomalaisista suvuista, etenkin omastani. Autan jos osaan ja jos aikaa riittää. Vanhimpia esi-isiä en pääse omaan puuhuni liittämään ilman jotakin badgea?
by Sari Mantila G2G Crew (510 points)
Hei Sari, ja tervetuloa joukkoomme. Olemme vasta käynnistämässä projektia ja on monta tapaa millä voit auttaa. Keskustelemme asioista projektin Google ryhmässä groups.google.com/forum/m/?hl=en#!forum/wikitreefinland missä voit kirjoitta myös Suomeksi. Liityttyäsi Google-ryhmään saat myös Suomi-projektin tunnuksen (badge). Yksi edellytys tuon esi-1500 tunnuksen (badge) saamiseksi on osallistuminen johonkin projektiin missä osoittaa yhteistyökykynsä. Sulla näyttää lähteet ja biografiat olevan hallussa joten saat senkin varmaan helposti. Voit ottaa yhteyttä minuun suoraan yksityisviestillä profiilini kautta jos on kysyttävää.

I received an email from Mary Richardson suggesting that I should consider to start coordinating with you according to my Pre-1700 ancestors. According to Mary Richardson the leaders of the project are Maggie Andersson and Eva Ekeblad. Please let me know, if you would like me to join the project.

Hello P.

You are most welcome to join Project Finland. Please join our Google group and our leaders will grant you the project badge. There is always something to do to help the project and a good way to do so is to start with your own family adding value to the profiles.

You can use English, Swedish or Finnish when writing in the Google group,

You have the badge, now, P. Keep it shiny!

I would like to join, my fathers mother had Sami in her and has the U5 dna
by Living Broyles G2G5 (5.2k points)

Nice to hear from you Timothy. I don't know if you were aware of the fact that the Sami population span over four countries with Norway and Sweden having most of the Sami. The Wikipedia article I found does not distinguish where the Sami immigrants to USA came from so your ancestors could very well be Norwegian or Swedish as well as of Finnish or Russian nationality. You will have to dig deeper into your sources before we can find where your Sami ancestors came from.

That said, you are welcome to join our Google group and introduce yourself and tell us what you would be working on for the project. Your project badge will be awarded when you join.

I have done DNA research and I'm prolly at least 50% Scandic, Iceland and Norway Norsemen which became Normans, some Sami and Swede, and my elusive surname which was ultimately changed in the US, but I'm thinking stemmed from Denmark possibly a Bruel type variant.  I also have a Milzow in my line and what I have found is that there was a Norway author in Iceland name Milzow, She is Milzow-1.

Hello!

According to my DNA-test at FamilyTreeDNA I have approx. 12 % finnish ancestry and according to genealogy research by relatives I am related to Calamnius, Spolander, et cetera, so I would like to join the Finland project.
by Henrik Sundström G2G1 (1.2k points)

Hello Henrik, and welcome to the project. Please join our Google group and I will award you the project badge.

Hello to everybody!

in Finnish: Hei vain kaikille! Mielelläni osallistuisin Suomi projektiin. Omissa (ja lähipiirin) profiileissakin olisi parantamista, mm. etunimet pitäisi kasata sieltä "middle"-kohdasta... Tällaista harjoittelua näin aluksi, kovasti yrittäisin oppia oikeille WikiTree-tavoille ja näin tuottamaan laadukasta sisältöä. Eipä oikein muuta tässä vaiheessa.

I not exactly sure what I am supposed to do?
by Erikah Ojaniemi G2G Crew (610 points)
I will add the project badge to your profile, but I have a feeling that was not what you are asking. I would suggest that you keep adding your immediate family putting in as many details and sources you can find. That way other members can see what sources you have and may be able to locate some new sources.

Your grandfathers profile could greatly benefit from place of birth, residence and death. You may know if/where he served in the military. Names of relatives can help pinpointing the correct individual in searches.

Please contact me through my profile (private message) if you have any questions.

I have been creating a number of Finnish profiles recently and have been identifying duplicates for match and merger, so thought I might as well make it formal and join the team.

I would like to join trying to find out more about my mother’s side but unfortunately I can’t read Finnish or Swede. My mom’s side is full Finnish. I have Luomanpera, Hanninen, Kankaanpaa, Koski (not sure what it was shortened from) in her family background. A birth record was found in Nurmo for Luomanpera and Kankaanpaa’s and Koski’s came from Kauhava. Maybe some day I’ll find a way to figure out my Finnish side.

I will help as I can, but as a non-Finnish speaker I may ask more than answer. Have gotten pretty good at searching the books, though.
by John Burkholder G2G6 (6.8k points)
Hi John, you were given the badge in August already.
Oh. Nevermind.

(Getting old, I guess.)

I recently started going through papers left by my grandfather, and concluded I have family going back centuries in Perniö (and likely surrounding regions). So, I started looking at putting the information into some semblance of order, and somehow happened upon wikitree.

So, I'm currently going through parish records and adding profiles. And thinking about whether I should add location categories for villages in Perniö, as I'm going to be working in that area anyway. Probably should. Once I figure out how it should be done.

Pleased to help with the little time I have. Added my GedCom and GedMatch today, will refine my own family tree and am willing to help with things related to Finland. Translations would be an easy thing for me, not a big genealogist myself :)

I would like to join this project as I have already added a few Finnish profiles of ancestors and have information for quite a few more to add. I have also already done some research on Finnish church records for my own ancestors, so I have some familiarity with it.
