Can you tell me if Elizabeth Baumgardner (married William E. Dotson) was John's niece or his daughter?

I am a descendant of Elizabeth (Baumgardner) Dotson born 1817 in the ASh, NC area...but I can't trace back beyond her.

I am including a link I found regarding an annotated 1850 census for Johnson County, TN. I'm hoping this will lead me somewhere. Any thoughts?

The record in Ancestry shows that Elizabeth was the daughter of one of the following John Bumgardner:

John Bumgardner 1787-1837 or

John Bumgardner 1785-1872

Do you have the actual record or are you referring to an ancestry tree?
