I uploaded my GEDmatch file in February but I have no matches here on WikiTree.

Is that even possible? Am I looking in the right place?

I have 1000+ 4th cousins or closer on Ancestry and dozens on GEDmatch. I have lots of second cousin matches on ancestry so I was hoping to find the same or others here.

I'll be the first to admit I don't understand WikiTree, My father is unknown and I am trying to find who he was.

This interesting name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and may be either a topographical or a locational surname. As a topographical name, Shaw was used for someone who lived by a copse, wood, or thicket, derived from the Old English pre 7th Century "sceaga", copse, small wood. As a locational surname, Shaw is derived from any one of the numerous small places names Shaw, from the Old English "sceaga", such as those in Berkshire, Lancashire, and Wiltshire. Shaw in Berkshire is recorded as "Essages" in the Domesday Book of 1086, that in Lancashire as "Shaghe" in 1555, and the place in Wiltshire as "schaga" in the 1167 Pipe Rolls of the county. The development of the surname includes Richard de la Schawe (1275, Worcestershire), John ate Shaw (1295, Essex), and William Bithe Shaghe (1333, Somerset), and the modern forms of the name range from Shaw(e), Shay and Shay(e)s to Shave(s) and Shafe. One of the most notable bearers of the name was George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950), who was born in Dublin into a Protestant family established in Ireland by William Shaw a captain in William 111's army, who went there circa 1689. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Simon de Schage, which was dated 1191, in the Berkshire Pipe Rolls, during the reign of KIng Richard 1, known as "Richard the Lionheart", 1189 - 1199. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Welcome to Wikitree.

You cannot upload any raw DNA data to Wikitree. Wikitree does genealogy and is creating one global family tree.

Yes there is a steep learning curve when you have just joined wikitree, but once you get past that, then you are a member of a great group of genealogists.

If you want to find your unknown father you can upload your raw data to Gedmatch and to FT-DNA and possibly to My Heritage.

There are however volunteers here at Wikitree who can help you look for and maybe find your father. They are called adoption angels and you can find them here.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Adoption_Angels

The DNA details you see on various profiles are the links to those who have taken DNA tests. The other details include kit numbers and ID numbers from various DNA testing companies as well GEDmatch.

I uploaded my raw file from Ancestry to GEDmatch in January and then uploaded my GEDmatch kit to FTdna and WikiTree back in February. Isn't that what I am supposed to do?

edited to add dates of when I uploaded my GEDmatch file here and on FTdna.
Upload raw DNA data to GEDmatch and FT DNA - yes

Upload to Wikitree - NO
I uploaded my GEDmatch file to WikiTree in February and what I originally said in my question title up above.

I don't understand why you keep repeating about a "raw dna file"? It's confusing because I never said anything about uploading a raw dna file to WikiTree.
What did you download from Gedmatch? The DNA file or the family tree?

The DNA file cannot be uploaded to Wikitree. The family tree can.

I didn't realise that Gedmatch does allow Gedcoms to be downloaded. i thought they only dealt with DNA matches.

If it was the Gedcom that you uploaded from GEDmatch, then I apologsie for the confusion.

Gedcoms are not automatically added to the Global family tree here at Wikitree.

You would have had to go through your Gedcom file and compare each person to profiles here on Wiktiree, to decide if they were the same or not.The program that does that here on Wikitree is called GEDcompare.

Shea is not really my surname. My mother's boyfriend (later a husband) at the time just allowed her to list me as the father on my birth certificate. My name would actually be "Karpowich", but I can't even find that name on the WikiTree.
That would be because noone from the family of Karpowich has added any family tree to Wikitree. You appear to be the first.
The first and last I guess, I am all that is left of the name. But what of all of my second cousins? I searched for some I know of the family I have found on Ancestry from my father's side. Wouldn't at least some of them show up here if they are all on GEDmatch?
NO. Sorry.

Wikitree has absolutely NO connection to GEDmatch at all. There is also NO connection between Wikitree and any of the DNA testing companies.

Karpowich sounds like a Polish or possibly a slavic name so you may want to start looking in Poland or eastern europe.
So you are saying there is no expectation of finding any relatives on WikiTree?
converting to an "answer" :)
Apparently someone is very confused because even just today they are claiming you should upload your kit to WikiTree to "get even more matches". That is why I logged in today.

I have been building two trees on Ancestry for the past 4 months. One to my known history from my mother's side and the other from my father's side, which I am learning from my newly found second cousins. I have been able to find the ancestral connection for us but with so many cousins and so little time left for me on this earth I think I will just concentrate on that.
Aahh That's where the confusion is.

GEDCOM and GEDmatch are 2 completely different things!!

You can upload a GEDCOM to Wikitree but not the raw DNA results.

A GEDCOM is the genealogical family tree that one creates in various genealogy software programs and the GEDCOM is the protocol by which those family trees can be transferred between different computers and software programs.

I would suggest that you convert your fathers tree on Ancestry to a Gedcom and upload that gedcom to wikitree - and then you might find some relatives - if they are already here.

I uploaded my GEDmatch Kit to WikiTree when they requested it for DNA confirmation back when I registered here on Wikitree back in February.

As far as I know from my registration on WikiTree you first download your raw DNA from Ancestry to GEDmatch, then upload that converted file to WikiTree,( which from Ancestry.com becomes a kit number starting which A------  and has 6 numbers after the A.)

I don't have a GEDcom file, I know that is a family tree file and haven't downloaded or uploaded a tree anywhere yet.

My apologies again.

OK the Kit number you entered for your Gedmatch is just that - the kit number. That's why you have the DNA tested badge.

I would suggest that you read the following DNA help pages and maybe you can learn how the GEDmatch ID numbers work.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:DNA_FAQ

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:DNA

You might also still want to contact the Adoption Angels - they usually know a lot about how to use DNA to find missing parents.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Adoption_Angels

My own journey with DNA is just beginning. My test is currently on its way to the lab to be tested, but I have read heaps and I thought I understood most of how it worked.

The phrase "uploading the gedmatch to wikitree" is confusing. If you had stated the Gedmatch ID then I would have understood what you meant.

I apologise for any confusion I may have caused.

As for the no relatives part, if no relatives from your family have added any profiles to wikitreee, then no, there won't be any matches.

But as Dennis mentioned below, you are more than welcome to invite your cousins  to add their profiles and other family members to wikitree. Just remember that each person can only have ONE unique profile.

Its possible that some of your cousins you've discovered on GedMatch and Ancestry, may have created their own profiles here on WikiTree. But its also just as likely that they've not yet heard of WikiTree -- you can invite them :)

Madlyn,

In answer to your original question,"Am I looking in the right place?"

The simple answer is No.  Wikitree is not a DNA matching site such as Gedmatch, FTDNA, or 23&Me.  It can not provide dna matches for you since it holds no actual dna files.

The confusion seems to be coming from the statements about uploading.  According to your Wikitree contributions, you have not uploaded anything. You entered your gedmatch test Information (ie the Kit number) in February.  You added yourself and your mother at that time.

Wikitree makes suggestions as to others who might hold a connection based on the genealogical information from their family twig in the big tree. Your twig does not yet have anything much for it to suggest.
