Use of the website Archive.org

In reading a G2G posting, a member commented they “blundered” into an old published genealogy on the website archive.org.

Archive.org is an important source for out of print, out of copyright family histories and county histories. Anyone can download full length books as PDFs or other formats (I have found the versions that have been converted to text files usually have ocr character interpretation problems, and are much less useful). I have used it frequently, and have put together a moderate sized personal electronic library of books I could never afford to buy.

For ready reference you can printout and bind key parts of these for ready reference.

Alternately, if you own Adobe Acrobat, not just the free Acrobat Reader, you can bookmark the key sections.

I download and bookmark family and town books as well. It is a great wealth of free out of print resources.

The really great thing about Internet Archive books is that they are freely accessible by anyone.  Far too often Google Books will only be available in full text to those from the United States and from Australia where I am I'm lucky to get a snippet view.  Sometimes which books are available seems quite bizarre as books that by the published date should be accessible in any jurisdiction will be locked up.  The same sometimes goes for HathiTrust, another good source of out of print books.

The other good thing about Internet Archive is you can create an account (I think it's free) and some books that are not out of copyright can be borrowed.

Your comments about availability apply to Europe also.(well at least France and the UK) I also prefer the interface used for books on Archive, finding it easier to manage, since it works just like a book. Sometimes searches for a word miss instances of it (I think because of the type used in the original )However, it's relatively easy to find a book's original index and use that.
