What happens when a project leader goes away and doesn't come back?

Question

I'm starting to add some profiles that are from Russia and I was interested in joining the Russian Roots project.  But on the project page, I see that no one on the leadership side has taken a role since July 2017.  I looked at the project leader's profile and it says she's away until further notice.  The other name listed as a contact doesn't have any activity in nearly 5 months.

I see that there are unanswered "I want to join" answers spanning the last 9 months.

First question: I'm wondering, when folks drift away, what happens to the projects that they were leading?

Second question: What is the best workaround for when there isn't a leader present and you still want to interact with folks on said project.  Is tagging your post with the project tag enough to engage others when seeking help?

Hi SJ,

Normally, the project would be marked as dormant and the G2G thread closed so no one else tries to join until Leaders are found. Since the project you're referencing is actually a sub-project of another, the join threads should have been switched out and the Leaders of the parent project could look into finding coordinators to help manage things.

Tagging your posts with the parent project tag and the sub project tag is the best way to go to discuss things with other members.

Specifically in the case of the Russian Roots, the project is under the wider Slavic Roots project. There are three leaders listed, so you might want to try to contact each of them. I haven't checked the join thread yet, but I'll have a look.

I can contact them and they can make me a member of the Slavic Roots project?  Or do you mean I should address this question to them?

Either way, I'll add a tag for them.

I'm still looking for an answer to my two questions above - partially out of curiosity and partially because I'd like to know how to engage my Russian profile questions.  I added these same questions to my post at the Slavic Roots page and copied a link to this page.  If I don't hear back in a day or two, I'll email the leaders directly.  Either way, I'll post any replies I receive here so that in case someone in the future has the same question.

I think they can make you a member of the Russian Roots project as well, but it's up to them and how they manage a sub-project of Slavic Roots when the leader is absent. Ideally a new Leader will be assigned to the project, or a Coordinator who will work with the leaders.

Wikitree Project Leaders resign for a variety of issues. Ideally, replacement leaders are found to take their place.

A lot of projects are advertising co-leader vacancies.  One is listed as having an interim leader, and two are listed as leaderless.  But the list isn't necessarily up to date.

Sub-projects don't have to have an actual badge-holding Leader in charge.

Russian Roots has a top-level project above it which is the Slavics Roots. There is no badge or leader for it.

I'm not sure if the other person you were referring to was me. I haven't done a whole lot in the past few months due to personal issues but am making my way back.  I tried to help Summer with this project but unfortunately their wasn't very much interest in it. I added some of my family profiles to it and will continue with that. She made this a sub project if the Slavic Roots project. You may want to contact that project leader. I will help you however i can . If you have any specific questions feel free to reach out to me.

Hello SJ,

I am very sorry that I have been unable to continue my duties as a Leader. There are some serious personal issues I have been dealing with, which hindered my ability to be an effective Leader. This is why I am temporarily inactive. I am only able to log on every few days and have not been able to spend any extra time working on project-specific tasks. The Russian Roots project was my creation, my baby, and I still want to be involved with it when I can, but I am unable to lead right now. As stated in many of the previous answers, contacting the Parent project is the best option. Maggie or Michael can help with whatever you need.

Sorry to hear that Summer; we all have times of activity and then our genealogy wanes when we are called to other obligations.
