Still, in its infancy, the Spain Project is looking for members. If you have Spanish ancestors and would like to be part of an exciting new project from the ground up, then answer this post below to sign up.

The project is organised into teams looking at everything from the management of key Spanish profiles to the seventeen autonomous communities of Spain and some evolving sub-projects.

Yes, I would like to join the Spain project, especially topics relating to medieval history in general, or the Spanish Reconquista. My ancestry is through Berengaria of Portugal (1191-1221), who married Valdemar, King of Denmark (1170-1241). Berengaria is a daughter of Dulcia, who is a daughter of Raimond Berengar IV, Conde of Barcelona, and his wife, Petronilla Ramirez (1136-1172), a granddaughter of Sancho I Ramirez of Aragon (-1094). Berengaria's father, Sancho I of Portugal (1154-1212), is a grandson of Teresa of Leon-Castile (-1130), a daughter of King Alfonso of Leon-Castile, and so also a descendant of Sancho II of Navarre (-1035). Currently I am researching the Spanish Reconquista.

I am the great grandson of Juan Corpas y Molina abt.1859 -1916  who was born in Spain.  He moved to Puerto Rico. His wife Catalina Monge abt 1870 - ?, appears to have been born in Puerto Rico.His children stated coming to America in 1920.

I would love to join this project.  I have a line of ancestors that are from the Basque region (Orella), who settle primarily in Santa Barbara county in California.  It was the printed family history of this line that fueled my interest in genealogy years ago and I'm still working on it.

I'm not sure how much I can help with the research aspects of this project. I don't have access to premium websites. I most commonly use Social Security Death Records, Find a grave, ancestry, my heritage FTDNA, DNAland, Familysearch.org. and family and friends for my ancestry questions.

I would like to join this group. I'm 50% Iberian Peninsula. Both my maternal Great Grandparents & Grandparents were from Bacares, a small mountain town in Almeria Spain. Having trouble finding any information that goes back further than the great grandparents.

Thank you, but I'm no longer interested in joining. I see that most of the research will focus on only Spain itself. While I have ancestors there, I'm more interested now in finding out more about those who moved from Spain to the new world. Please let me know if you know of or if a related sub-group develops.

Hi John, absolutely there is a project to suit your interests! It's the Latin American Roots Project which is an umbrella project for a number of individual country sub-projects in Latin America. Karen Tobo is the leader there. She's fantastic and I'm sure she'd love to hear from you.

Thanks Ed, sorry it has taken me so long to come back! Tbh, I am a bit put off by it being run by the Mormons, but that aside, I hope to learn lots from it - I can't say it has been immensely helpful with Spanish records, but hopefully if I keep digging something will come up.

Hi there Susie, sorry it has taken me so long to reply! I am a real rookie and not sure of how useful I can be, but would love to join.

I am trying to find records of my Spanish Grandfather and Grandmother to start creating a tree, but am having major problems finding any records at the moment. Partly I think this must be down to my lack of Spanish, but also I'm wondering if records were lost in the war.

Magin Janer, from Barcelona, appeared in NY circa 1958, started the "Spanish Benevolent Society,"  represented Spain in different functions, also as an investor for Queen Isabella, Died 1894. I have been unable to find any information on his family before his appearance circa 1858 NY.  (I have found "Magin Janers" from Catalunya but they are different generations.)

My great grandmother, Harriet Gunsalus, was of Spanish stock.  Her father was Benjamin T. Gunsalus.  My 7th great grandfather, Manuel Gunsalus (not sure of the spelling of his last name) was a Puritan immigrant from Spain.  He was in Bushkill, Pike, Pa around 1750.  He was born long before 1750 in Spain, and died 18 Apr 1758 in what is now Wurtsboro, Sullivan, New York.   I'd be interested in learning anything more about him and his descendants.

My husband's family name is Silva and we aren't sure whether he is of Spanish or Portuguese origin. We have been told that ancestors were Spanish Jews but have no proof. So I'd like to join.

Penny, have you taken a Family Finder DNA test at FTDNA?  Probably the quickest way to find out - they will let you know if you have any Ashkenazi or Shephardic DNA.

My Grandfather Is Frank Linares, born in Granada, Spain, he changed his surname to Barranco when he and My Grandmother Came from Granada Spain to Kuai, My Grandmother was Born in Madrid, her name was Maria Escoba or Escova Escobar are the 3 names that show up for her, I am 50.4 % Iberian Peninsula, Spain Portugal and France, My DNA shows My Brother is 50.7% Iberian Peninsula, we are 100% European!

I have to let you know that I do not speak or understand Spanish. The Spanish way of naming their children puts me in a spin. I have no idea in how to research with the names. My great-grandfather Juan Pena Carmona and my great-grandmother Josefa Vela Chillaron and their children came to Hawaii in 1912 on the ship Harpalion. They were from Arjonilla, Jaen, Andalucia, Spain. Juan’s mother per the ships manifest is Lorenza Carmona Blauco and was from the same place. I am interested in this project.

Maybe the easiest way to understand the naming convention is with a quick description and then an example.

In Spain you have a first name (often two names), no middle name (middle name is part of the first name), then your first last name (your father's last name) and then your second last name (your mother's last name).

So, lets take a father:

Juan Carlos Bernau Lopez

and his wife:

Isabella Maria Garcia Sanchez

they have a daughter and name her Daniella Carmen.  Her name will now be:

Daniella Carmen Bernau Garcia

If she married a man named:

Juan Pedro Vasquez Hernandez

and they had a daughter named Irene Sofia, she would be:

Irene Sofia Vasquez Bernau

You don't need to be fluent in Spanish to join the Spain Project. My Spanish is very limited and I rely on others in the project to help me out when things get tricky. As for naming conventions, we've just had a very interesting discussion about it in the Spain Project Google group which you will be able to read if you join. John MacDonald, one of our members, is in the throws of putting together a free-space page explaining the ins and outs fo Spanish Naming Conventions which will hopefully assist all of us moving forward.

I only have 1% Iberian Peninsula, not much I know, but it has me intrigued.  I've also read an article suggesting that the Cherokee may have originated from Spanish explorers to the North American East coast...and we supposedly have Cherokee heritage. So hope to learn more...

I am interested in joining and working on more info on my Spanish side as I have large GEDCOM with Mexican side, been doing research for Fernandez- Arganda Estrada family in Navaluenga, Avila and most records are not digital as of yet. Any help on locating Spanish records would be great.

Hello, I am interested in the Spanish settlement of Sicilia (Sicily). Spain owned Sicilia for many years, and oft times colonized this Italian island and also the lower half of the Italian Penninsula. I am especially interested in the Spanish ancestors of persons associated with Alia in the Province of Palermo. Alia was founded by Countessa Francesca (Cifuentes) Cifuentes y Imbarbara  in 1615, a Spanish countess who inherited the land Alia sits on. She colonized it so she could live off of taxes collected. The town of Alia celebrates her as their foundress each summer with pageantry. I would like to be able to Project Protect her profile and that of her family. I would also like to know who her ancestors were. In addition, my husband has many ancestors from Alia, and we think some of those families are of Spanish origin, especially the Catalanos and perhaps the Ferreras. Yo puedo hablar un poquito de Espanol.
