Hi Deborah, go to FamilySearch.Org, it's full of information from all over the world and it's FREE. Good Luck Ed
Hi Deborah,

We'd love to have you on the project. You'll need to sign the Honour Code first. To do this go to the help drop-down menu in the top right of your profile page and there's a link there. When you've done this feel free to message me or post again here and I'll get you into the project.

Thanks, and welcome to WikiTree!

Susie :-)
I would love to join the Spain Project. I'm working on uploading my paper tree but I have family from La Rioja, Galicia, Andalucia, and Murcia.
Hi  Jennifer,

We'd love to have you in the project! I'll send you a private message :-)

Susie
Thanks Ed, sorry it has taken me so long to come back! Tbh, I am a bit put off by it being run by the Mormons, but that aside, I hope to learn lots from it - I can't say it has been immensely helpful with Spanish records, but hopefully if I keep digging something will come up.

It's an interesting resource, thanks for pointing me at it!

Cheers

Debbie
Hi there Susie, sorry it has taken me so long to reply! I am a real rookie and not sure of how useful I can be, but would love to join.

I am trying to find records of my Spanish Grandfather and Grandmother to start creating a tree, but am having major problems finding any records at the moment. Partly I think this must be down to my lack of Spanish, but also I'm wondering if records were lost in the war.

With thanks

Debbie
I would love to join. I live in Spain, speak Spanish and I am investigating my children's Spanish ancestors.
Deborah, do you know where your Spanish grandparents came from? And the approximate birth dates? Perhaps I can help you find further info. Regards

Anne
I would like to join, I'm a Spaniard myself!!!

Hi  José ,

I will send you details :)

Magin Janer, from Barcelona, appeared in NY circa 1958, started the "Spanish Benevolent Society,"  represented Spain in different functions, also as an investor for Queen Isabella, Died 1894. I have been unable to find any information on his family before his appearance circa 1858 NY.  (I have found "Magin Janers" from Catalunya but they are different generations.)

Hi David, you'd be very welcome to join the project and see what we can find. We are still very small as a group right now so it's more about how we can organise ourselves as a project than how we can be a resource for others right now, but we'd love to have you if you are interested.

Certainly! My maiden name is Spain. My Spain family is located mostly in eastern Virginia, USA and coming to there from North-eastern North Carolina. TY

Hi Debbie,

This is a project for Spain the country rather than a one name study (although that would be a really interesting one to do). Have you traced your ancestors back to Spain yet? If so, you'd be most welcome to join us and work on Spanish profiles.

Susie :-)
No, not back to Spain, although my DNA shows ancestors to being there.

My Spanish Roots are from the Medieval Period since I'm descended from Lady Sancha Blount.

My great grandmother, Harriet Gunsalus, was of Spanish stock.  Her father was Benjamin T. Gunsalus.  My 7th great grandfather, Manuel Gunsalus (not sure of the spelling of his last name) was a Puritan immigrant from Spain.  He was in Bushkill, Pike, Pa around 1750.  He was born long before 1750 in Spain, and died 18 Apr 1758 in what is now Wurtsboro, Sullivan, New York.   I'd be interested in learning anything more about him and his descendants.

Please sign me up.  My personal roots are from way back (still trying to trace them from New Mexico to Mexico) but my husband's family (I'm working on his tree) came from Spain in the early 1900s.

Help me please.

Hi Lisa,

I'm not sure how much we can help you at this stage, but you are welcome to join us and search together. I'll send you a PM.

Susie :-)
Hi Lisa,

I can't find your WikiTree profile. Are you a member? If not, you'd be welcome to sign up (it's free) and then you can join the Spain Project.

My husband's family name is Silva and we aren't sure whether he is of Spanish or Portuguese origin. We have been told that ancestors were Spanish Jews but have no proof. So I'd like to join.

Thanks, Penny. I've sent you a PM. :-)
My Aunt was Married to a John Silva, He was Portuguise
Penny, have you taken a Family Finder DNA test at FTDNA?  Probably the quickest way to find out - they will let you know if you have any Ashkenazi or Shephardic DNA.

One in five Spaniards (today) have Jewish ancestry of some varying degree and one in ten has Moorish ancestry.

Hi Theresa,

In order to join a WikiTree project you'll first need to volunteer for WikiTree and sign the Honour Code. Otherwise you won't be able to work on extended profiles. We'd love to have you in the project once you have done this. Feel free to send me a PM when you have.

Thanks,

Susie :-)
Hi, Theresa, I have been living in Granada for more than 20 years. Barranco is a well-known name there. Was  your grandfather's name Francisco Barranco Linares?

I would like to join the Spain project. I have traced my Y-DNA ancestors to Spain in the 1400's. Unfortunately I am not yet Pre-1500 certified on WikiTree, otherwise I would have more to show.

I have to let you know that I do not speak or understand Spanish. The Spanish way of naming their children puts me in a spin. I have no idea in how to research with the names. My great-grandfather Juan Pena Carmona and my great-grandmother Josefa Vela Chillaron and their children came to Hawaii in 1912 on the ship Harpalion. They were from Arjonilla, Jaen, Andalucia, Spain. Juan’s mother per the ships manifest is Lorenza Carmona Blauco and was from the same place. I am interested in this project.

Maybe the easiest way to understand the naming convention is with a quick description and then an example.

In Spain you have a first name (often two names), no middle name (middle name is part of the first name), then your first last name (your father's last name) and then your second last name (your mother's last name).

So, lets take a father:

Juan Carlos Bernau Lopez

and his wife:

Isabella Maria Garcia Sanchez

they have a daughter and name her Daniella Carmen.  Her name will now be:

Daniella Carmen Bernau Garcia

If she married a man named:

Juan Pedro Vasquez Hernandez

and they had a daughter named Irene Sofia, she would be:

Irene Sofia Vasquez Bernau

hope this helps ;-)
Hi Bonnie,

You don't need to be fluent in Spanish to join the Spain Project. My Spanish is very limited and I rely on others in the project to help me out when things get tricky. As for naming conventions, we've just had a very interesting discussion about it in the Spain Project Google group which you will be able to read if you join. John MacDonald, one of our members, is in the throws of putting together a free-space page explaining the ins and outs fo Spanish Naming Conventions which will hopefully assist all of us moving forward.

I'll send you a PM and we can go from there.

I only have 1% Iberian Peninsula, not much I know, but it has me intrigued.  I've also read an article suggesting that the Cherokee may have originated from Spanish explorers to the North American East coast...and we supposedly have Cherokee heritage. So hope to learn more...
by Lynn Sexton G2G3 (3.1k points)
Hi Lynn,

I have 2% Iberian so we can be intrigued together! I'll send you a private message and we can go from there.

I am interested in joining and working on more info on my Spanish side as I have large GEDCOM with Mexican side, been doing research for Fernandez- Arganda Estrada family in Navaluenga, Avila and most records are not digital as of yet. Any help on locating Spanish records would be great.

Hi E,

I know we have at least one member actually living in Spain right now but I'm not sure where they are based. We'd love to have you join and we can see what we can do together in the mean time as the project grows. I'll send you a PM and we can go from there.

Hello, I am interested in the Spanish settlement of Sicilia (Sicily). Spain owned Sicilia for many years, and oft times colonized this Italian island and also the lower half of the Italian Penninsula. I am especially interested in the Spanish ancestors of persons associated with Alia in the Province of Palermo. Alia was founded by Countessa Francesca (Cifuentes) Cifuentes y Imbarbara  in 1615, a Spanish countess who inherited the land Alia sits on. She colonized it so she could live off of taxes collected. The town of Alia celebrates her as their foundress each summer with pageantry. I would like to be able to Project Protect her profile and that of her family. I would also like to know who her ancestors were. In addition, my husband has many ancestors from Alia, and we think some of those families are of Spanish origin, especially the Catalanos and perhaps the Ferreras. Yo puedo hablar un poquito de Espanol.

Here is the wikitree profile for Francesca (Cifuentes) Cifuentes y Imbarbara (bef. 1576 - aft. 1630)

 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cifuentes-11

Hi Sharon,

We'd love to have you in the Spain Project! In terms of Spanish settlement in what is today Sicily and modern-day mainland Italy, that would probably have to be done in conjunction with the Italian Roots project but we can make that work. I'll send you a PM so we can discuss it.

I'd like to join up.

I'm not of Spanish descent and I have no Spanish ancestors.

I do however, live in Spain ;-)

I'd be happy to help out as I can with records and grave searches in my area and to help out in any other ways as the need arises.

You're already being a help in this thread and we'd LOVE to have you in the project! I'll send you a PM and we can go from there.
