Girouard or Giroir

Question

In working on the tree of my aunt [wife of my late uncle] she descends from a Giroir married to Elodie Broussard, and I added him after no match came up. Elodie is mother of Gustave Girouard [Girouard-5153] already in the wikitree as Gustave Giroir. Gustave Girouard and his wife Eupheme Gonsoulin are parents of my aunt's ancestress Blanche Girouard.  The Gustave Girouard was a profile with no manager so I adopted and changed it to Girouard [the original form of the name] and merged them. Is there a general rule on which one to use, or just which one is on the birth record? Because it seems like every Giroir ought to be a Girouard....

If the Girouard in question fits into the Acadian Project (living n Acadie in the years 1600-1755), then the spelling is as adopted by Stephen A. White in his DGFA. See here for a list of names: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Familles_Acadiennes

If the person falls into the Louisiana Families Project (1760-1900), then we will use what is found in the Louisiana Church records for generations that followed the "Acadian". Contact the project for help in determining the surname spelling. Almost all of the Girouard/Giroirs in Louisiana use either Girouard (SW Louisiana & Acadian Coast) or Giroir (Baton Rouge area).

When i add people to my tree I usually put the name That appears on the marriage or Birth records.Sometimes it's good to check different spelling of a name to see if they are already listed.
