Crawfords from Stirling, Scotland to Maryland circa 1700s

My GGGgrandfather is John Andrew Crawford who was born in 1764/65 in Maryland. He went to Kentucky in the late 1700s and was one of the first settlers of what is now Mount Sterling in Montgomery Co, KY. He died in 1851.  I know alot about him. I am trying to find his parents in Maryland. An elderly relative told me that his father's name was James, and that John Andrew was supposedly born in Prince George's County, Maryland. She also told me that the family originated in Stirling, Scotland, but I don't know if James was the immigrant or son of the immigrant. I have found a few James Crawfords in Maryland in the 1700s, but they don't seem to match up. I researched the James Crawford of the Double Purchase plantation, but that led no where.

Does anyone have any Crawfords from Stirling, Scotland? Or Crawfords in Maryland? Thank you for any help!

I am researching the same tree.  John Andrew Crawford was my GGGGgrandfather. To confirm it is the same man, he was married to Dorothy "Dolly" Fort.

I am currently searching the Maryland archives and have had no luck thus far. I too have looked at James Crawford and couldn't make the link.  My next step is to resarch possible siblings.

My research so far indicates that John Andrew Crawford was born in a part of Maryland that became the District of Columbia.  I plan to research the history to determine if those records reside in DC or remained with Maryland.

Additional points are that during the 1700's, colonial times, birth records were typically recorded and kept by the churches, most likely the Anglican Church.

If this comment finds you, please let me know.  I am very interested to hear what if anything you have found.

Are you Mary Alice's nephew? I don't want to give too much personal info, but I know her brother had a son named Barry. If so, I know we are researching the same people. I am the daughter of Mary Alice's first cousin. Please email me at

I have SO much information on the family. I have traced each branch of each child of John and Dolly Fort Crawford.

I have had no luck finding John's parents or siblings either. I do have a copy of the interview he did that is part of the KY Papers of the Draper Manuscripts. He does say he was born in the part of MD that would become the "Federal city". And I have the book which tells the story of how he met his wife, In Search of Morgan's Station. It mentions our other set of GGGrandparents, James Ward and Polly Fort as well. I have done much research on that family as well.

Hope to hear from you! Sally Crawford Cochran

I would love to share info with you! Mary Alice is the one who told me the Stirling Scotland info.
