Child with large gap with siblings / older mother

Curious how you all approach this. There is a child (Mary) on a census, listed as Joseph and Edna English' daughter, but Edna would have been 49 when she was born - with a nine year gap between Mary and her next older sibling. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MX63-G5K

When you run across this situation, do you assume this is a natural child, or a possible grandchild raised as their own, or an adopted child? I'm just starting my research on this family, so many answers to find still.

Naturally, as soon as I post this, I find an answer. :) In the 1880 census, Mary is listed as their granddaughter. Now to figure out which parent she belongs to.
Good luck. Probably best to start by reviewing any unmarried daughters of child bearing age who were living at home when she first appears in the census.
I had this exact same problem. Four children with a gap of eight years between the first child and the second. The second, third and fourth child were all two years apart. Unable to find a marriage license, I thought perhaps the first child was from a previous marriage of the father and the wife had died and he had remarried or maybe this first child was that of another family member, etc. Years later I discovered a child had been born and died in the middle of that gap and between the census. A three and four year gap was not nearly as improbable. Recent DNA Testing with three cousins was the final proof that this first child was indeed a full sibling of the other three.
My kids were born in 86, 89, 95 and 03 - you never know

It is possible that there were multiple marriages, to give an example I am one of three. I'm 24 in October, my two brothers are 21 and 4.
