If you remove my work and delete children under 13, I quit. I put this info on here for them!

As I understand it, your own children under 13 will not be deleted. However, to protect children's privacy, other people's children under 13 will be deleted unless their parents sign on as members and agree to allow their children to have profiles.

Glen, Thank you for expressing your opinion on this matter. I have expressed dissatisfaction in this site several times and most times I have agreed. I will always obey the rules and regulations of the site. I do not know if there are laws  that are causing the changes or not. I do understand what you are saying and I believe that you are correct in what you are saying. I will add what I think is important.  I do not like other people changing my hard work (sometimes spending months or years) to what I add. I believe in individuality and not conformity. I believe we put what we want for the benefit of family and others that will read it. It is our artistic impression of what we build and not try  to make everyone look the same. I am not George Orwell and this is not the novel 1984.

I appreciate the hard work of the developers and leaders of WikiTree to make this platform available - without cost - to those who choose to become a community member. It isn't easy for any site, but especially a site the express purpose of which is to make available personal information, to navigate the global privacy waters. I think they do as good a job as any, and better than many.

I have been a community member for six years. I have had a generally positive experience. It always was conceived of as a collaborative site, and that requires compromise from time to time. That also means it is not for everyone. There are many other sites available that may be a better fit for publishing personal genealogy, including developing a personal site, which is actually pretty easy these day. Not to mention the old-fashioned way of making research available: submitting it to a genealogy periodical or self publishing a book.

I will say that on this particular topic, I made a decision after about a week of being a member not to include information living children at all or about living people unless I had their express permission. It seemed the courteous thing to me, and it is a personal guideline that has served me well.

Hi Glen.

The whole WikiTree community works in the spirit of preserving our family's History for the future generations.

I assume your question is because of this other post:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/607595/you-manage-profiles-children-under-that-are-not-your-children

Your own children under 13 will not be deleted, nor any other profiles of children under 13 having one of their parents as the PM.

If you are managiing profiles of children under 13 that are not your children, there are two suggested ways to preserve their profiles in the same post:

"Still, there are profiles in my own family that I don't want to disappear. In some cases I have been able to set one of their parents as the profile manager. In others I may be able to invite the parent to join WikiTree. Keep in mind, this doesn't mean that they have to be Wiki Genealogists. They just need to accept our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. See the GDPR FAQ for more on this."

To send an invitation, just add an e-mail address to their profile:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Invitations#Inviting_Family_Members

There is no big commitment in accepting your invitation, please see here:

I have always believed that my efforts to build a family tree meant I was dealing with dead people. 99% of my WT profiles are ancestors who are deceased. I'm fine with the new rule.

These changes are not being made because WikiTree wanted them. They are being made due to a change in the law. WikiTree could be subject to severe penalties and perhaps even shut down. I'm sure this is not what you want. I've received a message from ancestry.com that they are making similar changes. I think you will find that all the genealogy websites will be doing the same.

I use this site and another site called Family Echo.  Family Echo is a site where its not for public viewing but you can add your family in to make amendments etc.  I find both sites helpful as with this site you can find a lot more of your family but with Family Echo, you can add children.  Hope this helps.

You can add living people on WikiTree, they will not be visible to anyone other than the profile manager.
