Kingdom of Great Britain (Great Britain)

Question

I was noticing that the location information for Scotland suggests that up until 1801 it is just Scotland.  I don't believe this is correct.  From 1707 until 1801, Scotland was part of the Kingdom of Great Britain, or Great Britain.

Scotland, Wales, and England all entered into a union in 1707, this union excluded the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, etc), and Ireland.  

Up until 1707, Scotland would have been Scotland.

Scotland is still Scotland and has always been Scotland.  (Even before there was a Scotland)

Please let's not start saying stuff like Perthshire, Great Britain.

Well said! Scotland before 1707 and right up till today has and always will be Scotland the Nation which is one of four Nations that make up the United Kingdom.

I’d be curious to know if anyone has ever seriously suggested using something like “Perthshire, Great Britain”. That does indeed seem ridiculous, and I doubt anyone would support it. “Perthshire, Scotland, Great Britain”, however, seems perfectly acceptable for the 1707–1801 period.

About 100 years after the Union of the Crowns, the two countries saw the Union of the Parliaments in 1707, and became *member nations* of a United Kingdom of Great Britain. (Ireland wasn't added until 1801, when became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; after 1921, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.)

Keep it simple, Scotland is Scotland is Scotland.

You are absolutely right in terms of the autosuggestions and the constitutional position.

However, for the purpose of family history I have always ended locations in "Scotland" or "England" - dropping the "Great Britain", "United Kingdom" etc. They aren't useful for disambiguation and aren't that relevant for individuals being recorded.

If you have a look at the related questions at the bottom of this feed you will see how often this has been debated in the past. Its definitely a subject people become extremely passionate about. Personally speaking, I'm Welsh, my family are from Wales. I would not add united kingdom or Great Britain to their profiles because they regarded themselves as Welsh, not British! I believe the Scots are just as passionate (if not more so) :)
