Who could help me in finding the birth/baptism record of John Lancelot Hesketh to check if his parents are John Edward Hesketh and Sarah Elizabeth Butcher?
WikiTree profile: John Lancelot Hesketh
in Genealogy Help by Margreet Beers G2G6 Pilot (150k points)
Birth cert in Basford district Jul-Sep quarter 1900.  GRO site will give the mother's maiden name.  Free, but you have to register.  For more than that, you'd need to buy the cert.

With the mother's maiden name you can be more certain about the parents' marriage.  But a John Edward Hesketh married a Sarah Elizabeth Butcher somewhere in Basford district Jan-Mar quarter 1899.
Hi thanks for this reply but could you tell me what the GRO site is (I'm from the Netherlands and 'free' searching in the UK records is a bit difficult if you don't want to pay for original sources. I can settle for the mothers name if this is a Wikitree approved source.

No one seems to have answered your request for the GRO site.

Here is a link to the birth record on the GRO site.  - you have to be logged in to see the record (register for free).

The above link looks like this when typed in full...

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp?index=EW_Birth&CurrentPage=1&Surname=Hesketh&SurnameMatches=0&Forename1=John&ForenameMatches=0&Gender=M&MothersSurname=BUTCHER%20%20&MothersSurnameMatches=0&Year=1900&Range=0&Quarter=&District=&SearchIndexes=Search

You also asked for a source for the record - so here is detail and source ready to paste into the biography.

[[|BUTCHER]] was the maiden surname for the mother of [[Hesketh-178|John Lancelot HESKETH]] a Male born during Jul-Aug-Sep 1900 in the Registration district of Basford. (Volume 07B  Page 227).<ref name=GROBir1900 >GROBirth: General Register Office - Births; Index of England and Wales Birth Registrations; [http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/information-management/re-using-public-sector-information/uk-government-licensing-framework/crown-copyright/ Crown Copyright]; online repository search  https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp ; Accessed 14May2018 [https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp?index=EW_Birth&CurrentPage=1&Surname=Hesketh&SurnameMatches=0&Forename1=John&ForenameMatches=0&Gender=M&MothersSurname=Butcher&MothersSurnameMatches=0&Year=1900&Range=0&Quarter=S&District=Basford&SearchIndexes=Search Search Results] of John Lancelot HESKETH</ref>

The Mother's maiden name is indeed Butcher.  This is the record from the General Register Office website:

HESKETH, JOHN  LANCELOT       BUTCHER   <-- Mother's maiden name
GRO Reference: 1900  S Quarter in BASFORD  Volume 07B  Page 227

So as this event was registered in Basford, then the wedding info that RJ Horace has already given you in a comment to your question is also very likely to be correct.

Brenda,

What citation can I use for finding this record again? I'm not sure how this works in the UK,

Margaret, In this instance your going to have to use the free site Family Search.  You can source the original birth registration document there (it doesn't give Mother's maiden name), and once your have a formal source, you can manually enter in the profile the info I gave you above (copy and paste).  You will have to make a note that this source can't be linked.

You could also add the marriage source to the profile from Family Search, to further prove the Mother's maiden name of Butcher.  You would then have primary sources (that you can link too) and secondary sources that you can't link to, but you can explain where they came form.

Birth registration from Family Search:

"England and Wales Birth Registration Index, 1837-2008," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2FCF-LPS : 1 October 2014), John Lancelot Hesketh, 1900; from "England & Wales Births, 1837-2006," database, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : 2012); citing Birth Registration, Basford, Nottinghamshire, England, citing General Register Office, Southport, England.

Butcher/Hesketh Marriage Registration from Family Search:

"England and Wales Marriage Registration Index, 1837-2005," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:269Z-P2Y : 13 December 2014), Sarah Elizabeth Butcher, 1899; from “England & Wales Marriages, 1837-2005,” database, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : 2012); citing 1899, quarter 1, vol. 7B, p. 203, Basford, Nottinghamshire, England, General Register Office, Southport, England.

Hi Brenda,

Thanks a lot. I've done it in the way you've explained. But I still have one question. Are the records in the UK always being registered quarterly? So no exact dates or are those records the indexes?
From 1837 until today, you cannot see the exact date unless you purchase the birth, marriage, or death certificate.

If you found a baptism, you *might* be lucky enough that there was a kind parish clerk who was considerate enough to write down the birth date as well, but he was not obliged to.
Hi Margreet, by selecting my answer as best you have automatically de-selected your previous choice as best answer. Brenda's answer led me to compare the BMD and census against what I had already had and give you an answer! Therefore, I vote hers is the best! Please could you reselect it? That birth linked to RJ's records provided a tangible trail.... Thanks Btrenda and RJ

Hi Terry,

I think this is the correct record, but it's not accessible for free, so I don't know if I can use it as a Wikitree approved source I guess.

That's probably this one

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=102899096:2933&d=bmd_1525739307

They're indexed by date (quarter) of registration, not birth.  People were allowed 6 weeks.  I don't know what dreadful fate awaited people who were late.

The other one is

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=103949333:0815&d=bmd_1525739307

Marg,

I use links to Ancestry all the time, but I copy what they actually say in the record, like what I sent you and I also post the link to the record. I think it is important to show what the record actually says backed up with a workable link. Would be glad to post it for you and add the link. Let me know.
Hi Terry,

The problem is that you don't see the source of you're not a member of Ancestry. But I would love to see the original record but I don't want to pay for it. And in the Netherlands you don't have to, because it's for free.

I would post exactly like this, but I would add the link, but no matter the link, you are informing anyone where they can find this information(Michigan Dept, film # etc). Plus you are adding information of what I saw in the actual record, that weren't indexed, about the brides parents and the fact it was a 1st marriage for both, both important facts.

Hi, OK so building on the answers already given then Sarah Elizabeth Butcher was born 1878 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Her father was John Butcher (Butcher-2411) my 1st cousin 4 times removed. He was born in 1847 in cresswell, derbyshire and was married married to an Emily.

His father was also a John; Butcher-2407 born in 1804 in Whitwell, Derbyshire

And so on and so forth back to the 1600's.

Happy to meet a new cousin! If you add the profiles to link us up in wikitree and I will make you a joint profile manager on the Butcher profiles you are interested in?

You can click on my family tree and follow the butchers back from my mothers grandmother Amy Butcher - may be the easiest way to find the profiles. Inbox my for details

Wowwwwww, this is really great. I have to create Sarah's profile first and then I will link her with your family.

It's fantastic how Wikitree can source this for me while I'm living in the Netherlands and trying to find the relatives of my sister in law in the US.

I'm greatfull to be part of this Wikitree family.

Thank you all.
Yes, thank you to all! I'm not sure I could have worked forward on this one so really glad someone else was working back and had so much great help! Wikitree is amazing!

Margreet, I would love to figure out my relationship to your sister in-law? Could you private message me her wikitre ID? I know she must be living so it would be great to work out the relationships before they go unlisted on 25th May! It'll be easier to figure it out now, though still possible after :)

Hi Lesley,

That's very nice. For foreigners it's really a problem to search in other countries if your not willing to pay for it. In the Netherlands most sources are free of charge.
