I am suddenly locked out of a profile.

I was suddenly locked out of a profile. I had added the birth year -- the only date on the profile. Then switched to another (related) profile. When I went back to this one I noticed there was no profile manager so I attempted to adopt it & was not permitted to do so. Can't edit it now. Can't get on the trusted list either.  What is going on?

Patricia,

I won't "answer", since I don't have the power to fix anything, but I have a guess about what probably happened.  The recent European regulations that go into effect soon have made Wikitree lock the profiles of persons who may potentially still be alive.  Since you added a birth date that is less than 150 years ago, the profile instantly became locked as a potentially living person.

I think we're all going to have to proceed very carefully from here on out when we edit profiles.  It's too late, but if you had happened to know this person was deceased and put that information in the profile first, it probably wouldn't have locked up.

Any time you add a birth date to a profile less than 150 years ago without a death date, you will get a warning message that says living people cannot have Open profiles. It will then automatically lock that profile to a privacy setting. It has always worked this way on WikiTree. Unfortunately, I've been caught that way a couple of times myself. Your best bet is to email info @ WikiTree.com and explain the situation. They can add you as profile manager, or if you give them a death date, they can put in the death date and open the profile.

The automatic locking happens when the birth date is less than 100 years  ago and there is no death date (and "not living" is not checked). The 150 years ago birth date is the line that profiles need to be open.
