Barnaby Fitzpatrick, 1st Baron Upper Ossory [closed]

The surrender & regrant peerages always trip me up when the names change.

Born Brían Óg Mac Giolla Phádraig he submitted in 1537 and became Barnaby Fitzpatrick, 1st Baron of Upper Ossory in 1541.

Barnaby is the PN and Óg is just a title but I wasn't sure what to use in this case for the LNAB or which case to use for the CLN: FitzPatrick? Fitzpatrick? I thought maybe someone could just create him who is better with Irish names.

The easiest way to link him into the tree is as Margaret Butler 's 2nd husband. Thanks!

You had better take this up with a few projects.  A Baron of Ossory would be somebody prominent in Irish history, so they would get Protected Profile status in Irish Roots.  A Baron would also qualify for European Nobility status, so Euroaristo would be interested in this profile.

If you go to those projects and ask for help,  you will get plenty of assistance, as I am sure much interest will develop in this profile. Good luck with it, as I cannot help you more.

Most of the sources I have found say that the names are the same. Fitzpatrick in English and Mac Giolla Phadrig is Irish. Because the title 1st Baron Upper Ossory is English and the following Barons use Fitzpatrick; I would say use Fitzpatrick and aka Og Mac Giolla Phadrig with a note saying this is his Irish name and title. But lets see what other people say.

I'd say equivalent, not the same. My guess is LNAB Mac Giolla Phádraig. While it only took a couple of generations to de-Irish the native Irish nobility who supported the Tudor Government, they certainly never stopped using Irish in this time period.

I'd say Irish in the name fields "Brían Óg" & "Mac Giolla Phádraig

(Brían Óg) together because that is the way it is used in speech

add [[Category:Irish History, Kingdom of Osraige]]

because you are also going to add his title; it is best to consider how all the names sit at the top of the profile itself, With Fitzpatrick as other last name, I suppose Barnaby is a preferred name. I'd use both names prominently in the profile.

I think I will take a stab at this one...thanks for the input everyone.
