I’m working on this orphaned profile (HOLT-4702) and have discovered she has been given two sets of biographical details in published genealogies written by researchers from three different families. There doesn’t seem to be any way to reconcile them because they’ve got her living with two different husbands in two different states at the same time. Does anyone have any ideas to share about it?
“Roxerene” Holt (HOLT-4702] also called Roixanna, Roxilena, Roxalana, Rosserem and several other variants was b. 6 April 1762 in Windham, Connecticut, to Nehemiah Holt and Anna (Farnham) Holt.
The genealogiy of the Sumner family states that she married SUMNER-617 Ebenezer Sumner of Ashford, in Windham County, Connecticut, the son of Edward Sumner, Jr. and Experience Marsh, on 13 June 1782, and had two children by him before dying some time between 1785 and 1789, when he married Sarah Perrin as his 2d wife. I haven’t found a place of burial for this Roxerene. It appears she is not in the same cemetery as Ebenezer and Sarah.
The genealogies of the Holt and Hitchcock families state that she married HITCHCOCK-494 Ebenezer Hitchcock of Hampden County, Massachusetts, on 12 May 1783, had at least two children by him born in 1784 and 1786, and went with him to Leicester in Addison County, Vermont, where she died in 1825.
There appears to be at least some evidence to support both versions of the facts, (including the dates of the two marriages with bith brides’ having the Holt surname), so I’m leaning towards the theory that two similarly-named women of about the same age have been conflated. But which of them is HOLT-4702?
