Hi Caroline!  Welcome to WikiTree!

What do you mean born 1851 in New York, but Immigrated from Germany?  Did his parents take him to Germany after his birth and then he returned to the U.S.?  Do you have any additional information about him such as where in New York, his wife's name, his parents' names?  Anything will help narrow the search.  As you already know, Smiths are tough to research.

I'm sorry I made this confusing. I finally got more information from my mother.  Henry Clay Smith was born in New York (1851), but his parents immigrated from Germany. He married Alice Smith (Hardwick) (1856) who was also born in New York.  Their daughter was Ruth Sanford (Smith) who married David Doggett Sanford.  She died in 1916, and is my biological great grandmother and the mother of my grandfather Filmore Doggett Sanford. I've been unable to find anything through myheritage or family search other than census records that go past Henry Clay Smith.  Thanks.
