Who reads public comments?

+3 votes
Do public comments on profiles routinely get read by someone? Or are they read only when someone happens to visit the profile? I ask because I've been studying a few profiles (ancestors of mine) and notice discrepancies. When I do I've been writing public comments. I wonder if that's the way I should do it or am I just spouting off into the wind? Should I be bringing issues to people's attention some other way?

A good tip for when you post a public comment on a profile, Paul, is to check the activity of the profile manager, if the profile has one.

I looked at your contributions log and checked for your 4 most recent public comments; one profile was orphaned, while the other 3 had managers who haven't been active this year.

Even if the profile is orphaned or has an inactive manager, go ahead and post useful comments, as one or more of your fellow WikiTreers may be following the profile or related profiles. Just understand that you may not receive any response to your comments.

When you add a comment on a profile, it is automatically emailed to the profile manager(s).  This is a highly recommended way to alert profile managers to new information.  I am surprised that none have responded to you, either with a "thankyou" for leaving the comment or by private message.

In one case it is because I posted the comment just before I asked the question. However, in the other case...

To confirm, the message is only to the profile manager and whoever reads the profile?
Paul, of course the comment is there for whoever reads the profile.  That's in addition to being emailed to all managers of the profile to alert them to the new comment and - hopefully - start a dialogue between you and the manager(s).
I just checked the other case. There were replies ... as additional public comments. I didn't think to check the profile again.
