CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 19th, is ARMED FORCES DAY.

Begun by President Truman to honor those who serve and sacrifice

https://militarybenefits.info/armed-forces-day/

Thanks, Eddie.  Great to know.
You are obligated to BARBECUE ! (don't set the garage on fire pleez)
Now, you know, I know a bunch about BBQ having made a number of rubs for award winning BBQ companies.  The word comes from the Taino language barabicu and means "sacred fire pit".  BBQ as opposed to grilling is long slow heat and was originally done in a pit in the ground.  Grilling is often called BBQ but is generally faster using more intense heat.  Want your meats tender?  Simmer in a vinegar mixed with BBQ sauce after grilling.  The vinegar is a natural tenderizer.   Enjoy!  By the way, the story that it comes from the French phrase barbe a queue meaning from beard to tail has been dismissed by most language experts.
Is "simmer in a vinegar mixed....after....." correct?  It seems it should be ....before.....traditionally.
I barbecue soul food style.

Meat in pineapple juice overnight,  with TONY CHACHERE Creole seasoning

then when on the grill Louisiana Hot Sauce and mashed onion pulp, then just before it comes off, drizzles of honey . Let it cook maybe 5 minutes more after you drizzle
You can use the vinegar before as a marinate but a lot of my clients prefer to do a rub, then grill, then simmer in vinegar to keep the meet warm and tender
I am familiar with the marinate but keeping it warm in vinegar is new to me.
As you could easily guess, I'm no expert cook, just enough to keep every
one in the family happily fed.
A trick I learned from a couple of the folks who compete on the BBQ circuit and several who own restaurants.  It is a very low simmer so no high heat but enough to keep the food warm at 145 degrees to 170 degrees.

And the meat is generally served within an hour of coming off the grill.
I marinade the meat for a couple of hours then barbeque. Is has always been tender enough and then after resting for about 10 - 15 minutes it's good to go. But I too am no great cook
Thanks for hosting the WikiTree Weekend Chat, Laura.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.
Hope everyone had a great weekend and hope you join us next weekend for another chat!  Thanks everyone for joining us!

Tips

  1.  Add the {{Unsourced}} template to profiles that only have internet trees, gedcoms, or statements that the info is from personal knowledge.
  2. May 25th is one week away. So make sure you have indicated death dates for anyone you know is dead in your watch list.  If you don’t know the exact date.  Estimate it.  But don’t put a death date in for any living people.
  3. When participating in Challenges only use the tracker when you are adding data that fits the criteria of the challenge.  For example, Sourcerers is only for profiles that do not already have a valid source.  A valid source is one that is not an internet tree, gedcom, or personal knowledge.   (and remember Integrators has one going on this month which you can find out about here  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Integrators_Project_Challenge_Outline)
  4. Got a question about a policy?  Need hep with a profile?  Have a brick wall?  Post a question in G2G that is where you go for most help.
  5. Enjoy your time on WikiTree!  We are glad you are here!
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (824k points)
I disagree with the internet tree. If they are personal trees maybe they are unsourced, but there are family groups that have sources that make their trees public. These are valid sources. I will removed Unsourced for any of these I find.
I find any family created trees without valid sources listed suspect.  Why?

Because many of the trees created in the 1800s and earlier were driven by a desire to make families look more connected or royal.  There are entire books written by seemingly credentialed people that are just plain fiction.  Some of that fell into the 1900s too.  I see less of it in modern times but that does not mean it no longer happens.

And there are family stories that are just plain wrong.  My Mother told me family lore that when I researched them fell apart.  Memory is faulty.  And there are yarn spinners in many families.

That is why I am not sold on internet trees without collaborating sources that show the datais are indeed correct.  You would think it would be relatively easy to verify a tree that has names, dates, and locations and when you can't, that makes the tree suspect.
Laura, I also disagree with marking internet trees unsourced as a blanket rule. Suspect maybe but I know that my own tree on a different internet site needs much more sourcing but it was started by my grandmother well before the internet was available and even with few sources on her work the lines I have been working on have proven correct, with sources, for the most part. We need to very careful about jumping to any conclusion and just assuming that the tree is not valid and therefore is not a valid source is very poor logic. Maybe you should mark them with a different category and or add some sources yourself.
I agree internet sources are of unequal value. Contact the sponsors and ask about source. The Pomeroy tree is based on a book and has been updated regularly. They have sources off line if you want them. They will answer emails. It is run by the American Pomeroy Association. I regard it as a better source than most books. I use it regularly and would be very annoyed by people assuming the information is unsourced without investigating further.
Laura, the profile found here, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gamage-104 , has only internet trees listed as the source. when checking the link I found 5 trees with very close information and from what I see some of them have sources attached. I can not see those sources, at least until I can go to the library, but they are there. This is a perfect example why yout tip 1 should not be followed as a rule. Please reconsider that one.
I completely understand about the unsourced sourced thing - and work each day to find and cite sources that are solid for my profiles BUT as I brought up on another thread the other day there are some folks this does not apply to

Native American, First Nations and other indigenous people have a tradition of an Oral History passed down through generations - this is not just family gossip these are lessons taught from an early age so a child grows up reciting the lineage and places and things about each person in their own family to in turn teach to their own children - many of these folks only have documentation after they survived near genocide by invaders and those are who is doing that documentation

So in the case of these people I would trust the accounts of the Oral History over the Scrip records or reservation roll calls

Yes Indigenous Peoples often have very strong Oral Traditions.  In that case and in the case of a sourced tree you can add some info to show it as a more sourced source...

Oral traditions.  There are many recorded interviews at the Smithsonian and held by some tribes.  If you can find a reference to a recorded interview I would add that as a source.

You can also do your own interview and say when, where, who,

I was in my original post too general.  So let me revamp that...

As we know, many of the internet trees are bogus and not well if at all sourced.  Those should be labeled as Unsourced.   If you find an internet tree that you think is valid with sourcing then indicate that and don't just drop in the URL with no explanation.

If you are documenting from family bibles, letters, etc can you make a scan and add it as an image that is used as a source?   I did that with a family tree that is on the wall of a large house (villa, mansion, estate) for my Walter Family that goes back to the 1600s and published in a book written by once of my relatives.  (I also have a 30 x 40 wall chart of it)

Dale I have restated it above.   Yes I was too general and I love the fact it generated this great discussion.  We all have so much to learn from each other!   My mantra is "if I have not made a good mistake I can learn from I have not grown in that day..."   So it was a mistake to be so general. I have learned from it and so have everyone else!  Thanks for pointing that out!
You shouldn't remove Unsourced for any of these you find because you do not see the source on WikiTree and you can't get to click on them because they are not on the profiles, Sue. Sue They should put the book on the profile under Sources then. Then it will not be considered unsourced. Sources shouldn't be offline they should be online.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Linda, I strongly disagree with your statement "Sources shouldn't be offline they should be online" I have a large number of source documents that you can not find online, but they are valid sources. Nowhere in the sources style guide does it say that sources have to be online, in fact if you read that carefully it shows how to add offline sources. I manage a profile that has a link to ancestry trees and they say sources are attached. I can not see them because I do not have an Ancestry account but that does not mean they don't exist. I will check them out in a couple of weeks when I get a chance to go to the library but until then if anyone markes the profile Unsourced I will remove that because I do believe that the sources exist.

Laura, you need to be careful with images. In light of the privacy changes going on I would never add an image of the family bible my father has, it contains names and dates for some still living family members.

Good point Dale about images.  I was thinking most people don't write it bibles anymore that those would be mainly historical (dead) people.

Wow, this rule is really going to need some thinking about...  it affects everyone who has posted pictures to Facebook (which I never have, whew dodged that one!)...
oh what an awesome family tree! lucky!

Not a lot this week.

I applied to the DNA Quest program being run by MY Heritage - their own deadline was 16 May - and noone has heard anything from them. They are now 2 days past their deadline and this silence is nerve wracking - and somewhat unprofessional.

I have also uploaded my DNA raw data from FT DNA to My Heritage and am waiting for that to be processed.

Other than that, I have not done much genealogy this week.

The main reason for this is because I want to wait until 25 May and see what "damage" the GDPR does to my profiles.

Family chats starts in 5 hours time.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
DNA Quest:? What is that? I have a Myheritage account and uploaded DNA there. What is that? As far as FT goes, you're gonna have to fork over 19 bucks to see the results. Lame, I know. But, you get to see the matches.

GDPR shouldn't do anything to my profiles as I already prepped everything. At best the DNA for one profile is gonna be removed. Good luck!
The DNA quest is a pro bono project that My Heritage began back in April - to give away 15,000 free DNA kits to adoptees looking for their biological families or to parents wanting to find those children they gave up for adoption.

Priority would be given to those who cannot afford the cost of a DNA kit. The deadline for applications has now passed and we were supposed to be getting a response this week as to whether or not our applications were succesful. But so far there is only silence.

I applied for a kit for my mother since she was adopted and I really want to know who her father was and who his family were. MY DNA results from FT DNA were interesting to say the least.

I know that 15,000 kits are a awful lot of kits to post out, but surely they could have hired extra staff to help out...

My original test was done with FT DNA so it doesnt cost me anything to also upload my file to My Heritage. It's also already up at GEDmatch.
Sounds interesting. =D Hope something comes from it!
Awesome!!  Just got the email from DNA QUEST - and my application was successful. I am thrilled about this!!

Now my mother can do a test and hopefully we can find her fathers family!!
Awesome! =D Good luck!!!!!!
Thanks chris. Off to the family chat now!!!
I got my acceptance email Yesterday. I wish you the best on getting accepted also
Actually, you can upload to FTDNA and see your matches for free. The $19 one time is for the use of the tools besides surname search. You can still look at match's trees. I can't remember if you can do the in common with or not without the $19.  But the chromosome browser and matrix tool are well worth it to narrow down for possible triangulation groups. I love FTDNA.

Today is.....

NATIONAL PIZZA PARTY DAY

Each year on the third Friday in May, millions of pizza lovers across the nation join in extolling the qualities of pizza on National Pizza Party Day.  Celebrate by inviting friends and family to share a night of fun at your favorite pizzeria.  Another way to celebrate is with a homemade pizza with fresh toppings or by having one delivered.

  • In ancient Greece, Greeks enjoyed bread covered with oils, herbs, and cheese.
  • In Byzantine Greek, the word was spelled “πίτα”, pita, meaning pie.
  • A sheet of dough topped with cheese and honey, then flavored with bay leaves was developed by the Romans.
  • The modern pizza had its beginning in Italy as the Neapolitan flatbread.
  • The original pizza used only mozzarella cheese, mainly the highest quality buffalo mozzarella variant which was produced in the surroundings of Naples.
  • It was estimated that the annual production of pizza cheese in the United States in 1997 was 2 billion pounds.
  • The first United States pizza establishment opened in 1905 was in New York’s Little Italy.
  • Pizza has become one of America’s favorite meals.

Also today is....

NATIONAL NO DIRTY DISHES DAY

May 18 marks a fun holiday, National No Dirty Dishes Day.  This is a day that gives us all a break from the regular daily routine.  There are two options for this day.  You can eat all meals out. If that is possible, would also be a bonus treat. Or, you can use disposable paper plates, cups and silverware.  To stay earth friendly, choose ones that are biodegradable.

https://nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-no-dirty-dishes-day-may-18/

So since it's also National Pizza Party day, please use paper plates lol!!!!!!!!!!!

Mangia!

=D

Pizza's good. Probably not the best thing FOR you. But, whatever. My parents have learned how to make pizza from a pizza making class held at one of the Italian restaurants in town. One of the hints is you don't toss the dough.
That settles it!  I was debating with myself whether to take home a pizza tonight, since it's about time I lost control of my weight.  Now I just have to do it, to honor the day.
So we make the pizza and then wash the dishes?  Two days honored!

I used to make my own pizza dough.  It was just flour, water, and yeast.

Pretty simple just took more time and that is at a premium these days it seems.
We got my dad his own mozzerella cheese maker. This can only end awesomely.
Hmmmm we all love pizza :D Making them yourselves with the kids also is a lot of fun !
Did someone say "PIZZA" omg I just got hungry :)
Get in line, Steve! I gotta test it for quality. =)
that is funny - I yelled at my husband for banging around pots and pans last night when I was trying to sleep- seemed like he had somehow fed an army in silence then went to wash up!  Guess in light of this he was prepping for today

now I want pizza
This is a dangerous weekend for anyone wanting to be on a diet!  Pizza, Chocolate Cake, Birthday foods, BBQ.  Sounds the making of a great WikiTree party to me!
I have a feeling if I set up a bar many of you would be under the table after trying to fix the many mistakes on the site. =)

There were 2 different USS Nevada ships.  To do deeper research we would need to know which one.

Often the ship records are available on Fold3  Many libraries have free access to Fold3.  If you don't let me know.  My library has access to it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Nevada_(SSBN-733)

http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=96256t

Oh - yeah sorry I went and started cleaning out a closet - anyhow this is him:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mariott-29

why would two ships have the same name - that seems kind of dumb!  I know nothing about the military really - my dad was in the army - stationed in Alaska but uncle Chief saw real action
Often one ship is retired and a newer updated ship is commissioned in honor of the older retired ship.  I can't think of when they had two ships with the same name at the same time.  But I have seen numerous examples of an older retired ship and a new ship with the same names.
The SSBN is a a new nuclear powered SUBMARINE.

Happening now in the United States...

There was another school shooting Friday, this time at Santa Fe High School near Houston, Texas. The shooter is said to be in custody, and early reports indicate that multiple people were killed.

What we know so far:

• At least 8 people are dead following a shooting at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas.
• As many 12 others were taken to the hospital.
• A police officer was also injured in the shooting.
• A Texas police official says that the shooter, a male student, is in custody.
• A second student was detained for questioning, the official said.
• Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the school early Friday morning.

So very sad.  I think they need to put in things like you have at a ballpark for entry.  Parents and Grandparents can be trained to do a container search.  Uniforms would stop any kind of baggy clothing that can hide a weapon.  The object is... don't let them in to begin with.
Live Updates:

Injured is 13 and the guns was his fathers and he wore trench coat also made pressure  cooker bombs and moltov cocktails bombs also. placed them around the school. There was 2 teachers killed, a overseas student was killed who was suppose to go home in a couple of days.

I was rushed to the ER on Monday evening after passing out on my recliner while working on my computer. I have pneumonia, for the third time, and came home on Tuesday but the medicine makes things even harder to do, this is my second try at this answer. I am on this medication until next Thursday so I may be slow doing anything until after then but I will get things done sometime. Obviously this means I have not done much genealogy.

by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
So sorry to hear about your medical condition. Hoping you will be back on your feet, and typing again soon. Please take care of yourself, do what the doctors say!!  We will be here when you get back, rest assured.
My prayers are with you. Will add you to the prayer list at church.(is it OK we're Methodists ?)
I hope you feel better, soon!

Eddie, I was baptized a Methodist. My current church membership is with a church that resulted in a merger of a congregationalist church and a Disciples of Christ church.  I am also an Ordained Minister
but have no church of my own, so feel free. I became Ordained when I was a scoutmaster and had to conduct non denominational services for some weekend campouts.

Prayers are already in the works.  I always ask God to send his Archangel of Healing, St Raphael.  And that healing is fast and pain free if at all possible.

I have had pneumonia several times and it and bronchitis are no fun.
Get well, Dale!
Hope you’re better soon
To all, I am improving slowly but I still hit a wall in only a short time. I used to be able to spend all day on WikiTree as well as handle other tasks at the same time on my computer but now it seems like it is work on the computer for an hour and rest for at least 3 because I start to make stupid mistakes.
Hope you get well soon Dale. Will say a prayer for you
vibes to ya Dale - dang body is wearing out here too - so much to do and good intentions but little time or energy
I kind of know what you are talking about Dale because of dad in a year he has had pneumonia 5 times and last is this past week even. I am here late but I am here. My family has had a lot going As I said last week my dad was suppose to be released to a rehab in Sweetwater, Tennessee last Monday well he developed a 100 degree temperature and pneumonia Sunday night so he is still there as today and he suppose to be released tomorrow to the rehab. But yesterday we noticed on his back he has rashes so he might end up still there this week. Mom wants he released by the end on June from the rehab to home but I told mom that might not happen because he is very week and has lost up to 33 or 34 pounds in 4 months. We all have allegories problems except for my brother-in-law and brother. Since my sister stayed with my dad at the hospital on Friday night then my brother stayed last night I went with my mom yesterday and visited with him so he will not forget me. His demitia is getting worse. But first time in a long time before my mom and I left he made a joke especially about my brother when he came. It surprised and stunned me and my mother. I commented on it when we stopped to eat before going home last night. We at Cracker Barrell below the hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee. My mother wanted to go to church this morning but she was so tired that she over slept so she decided before she went and she wanted to get there this morning but she didn't because of oversleeping and then she decide to clean a little in my dad's bathroom so we can have it ready for him when he comes home. During the week I am going to strip his bed down especially bedspread and wash them so he will have the bed clean when he gets home. If he ever will get home. He still has diahara and probably will have a little problem with it when we ever get it to slow down all rest of his life. He has changed a lot he doesn't seem like my mother husband and my dad and my sister and brothers dad. I has changed a lot since he began with demetia 5 years ago. Especially since he lost so much weight. Right now he has to take pills with pudding and has to have thicken in his drinks or any thing that is liquid. Because of his pneumonia. Also when he sees thing written about what they are going to do with him written on a board on the wall he reads it all the time so they have discovered that they can't do that because he repeats what he sees. So they don't put it up on the board anymore. When he goes to rehab no one can stay the night with him. He is not going to like that at all. He gets mad at all of his family and himself now days. It is funny. As my mom told my brother before she left my dad is a different person and what he is seeing of  my dad because of stayin g nites on the weekend is why she didn't what them to stay with him. But they should see what I am seeing and dealing with all the time and days. Just not when the come for special occasions and holidays when the come to visit. As she told him it is hard to watch, hear and see the changes in my dad. It is very hard especially for me with me having problems that I was born with because what I have is genetic which is Prader-Willi Syndrome which it itself is hard for them to deal with and especially for  the people who has it even themselves. But with God's help we can deal and live with all that going on.

So I agree with everyone on your chat here.

Hails and horns, Wikitreers!

I hope everyone is having a good day. Things genealogy wise are a little weird. My first tip is that if a tree seems messed up beyond a shadow of a doubt, feel free to post about it here. I found a weird one, everyone. It's explained in this thread: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/611303/the-rimbaults

It needs the help of the Acadian project, a young priest, an old priest and maybe someone with a nuke. It's the only way to be sure. =)

I mean look at this tree: https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Cyr-Family-Tree-437

It was messed up when I was adding people in on Ancestry. Not even gonna get into how that one lady is DNA confirmed. But, apparently there was a double of that Mi'kmaq woman married to a Rimbault. I had to disconnect her. The daughter has no sources of any kind. Profiles need to be cleaned up. It's a mess. I tried to do a little myself. But, the thing is I do not know Latin. Pig Latin? Yes. Latin? Not so much.

Don't be afraid to send your friendly neighborhood leaders a message. They'll be happy for the workload. =)

In other news, I made contact with yet another Felker cousin. This time it was a second cousin whose aunt is my mom's first cousin. Go on. Sing "It's a Small World". I dare Eddie to post a clip of it.  He wanted to know the connection and I helped him figure it out. I have yet to find any Hamel or Laplante cousins tested. They are out there.

It's a cool connection, too. Here's hoping the others take more tests.

That's about it from me. Gonna be doing that other thing that I do. And if any Acadians in the Acadian project want a crack at that thread, go for it. No problems here! =D
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (756k points)
Wow, Chris, I peeked at your thread, saw tons of controversy, and slowly and cautiously backed away avoiding eye contact.  Good luck!
Wise precaution. Sigh.....

Could be worse. Could be an all out flame war.
People did seem fairly polite, despite the strong opinions - one of the great strengths of WT.  Have you tried dropping the Latin into google translate?  I've never gotten very good results there with Latin.  Too many possible translations, many of which don't make sense.
The opinions weren't THAT strong. This is tame in comparison to some of the things I've seen. Side note: Never get involved in a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice debate. It'll never end well.

As far as Latin goes, I could try that. The thing is the text can be hard to read. Not even sure where to start with that lady to be honest with you.
LOL I know what you mean.  There's a guitar forum I stay away from despite my interest in it, just because the people are so nasty.  Even when they agree, they argue.  And that place has a very strictly enforced 'Be Nice' rule.
Unfortunately that's the nature of the internet. The screen gives people a sense of anonymity and people feel like they can say whatever they want without consequence. Some people then take it to the real world and well...bad things happen.
Yep, the internet is one giant global Monty Python Argument Clinic, where all too often you bumble into the Abuse department.
I liken YouTube to being a wretched hive of scum and villainy. =)
https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/613203/the-rimbaults-acadians-  Chris you might want to check out this thread.
I know about the thread.  =) Thanks!
looks like a real pain - and I have had some of those - good luck
Same to what Navarro Mariott said Chris and everyone else.

To the best of my abilities I have finished my orphaned family GEDCOM.
I started with the alphabetized list of Maltby, then the Maltbie and Maultby
lists.  I added in spouses and did lateral family lines both up and down  from a given profile.  Sometimes I left names of children on parents profiles for others with more interest than I had to follow up.  I did not attempt unknown infant category.  Or Mary and John Maltby  categories, just toooooo many!  I have sourced about 5000 profiles in this GEDCOM in the last three years.  There are around 300 locked private profiles that were also skipped due to an unresponsive  manager.  Now I'm trying to
source undated profiles for the coming disaster.  Thank heavens for the
past experience.  This is so much harder.
by Beulah Cramer G2G6 Pilot (565k points)
edited by Beulah Cramer
Beulah that is a lot of work and you should be proud of it!

If you have run the app from Jamie Nelson and taken care of any of the profiles that are in the target zone to be affected than you should be fine.

That is here  https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/nelson3486/living/

If the person has died and you know it, if you do not have a firm death date, estimate one.  That will keep it from going unlisted.  If the person is still alive and they are not a manager of their own profile it will go unlisted but you as either the PM or a member of the trusted list will still be able to see the profile.
I did do Jamie's list for my watch list..  I found some profiles that I had missed.   All of the green locked profiles with the unresponsive manager were born in the 1940 to 1980  range and will be unlisted.  Luckily I am on the trusted list for many of them, being my cousins, but they are much younger than i am and will probably out live me.  At almost 82 I'm not going to start adopting profiles that will in all probability be unlisted because of the date management and living problems.  The data doctor project is now on my radar for the next three or four days.
If you see them on Jamie's app then you are either the PM or on the trusted list in which case you will continue to see them if they go unlisted
well I can not find e-mail for the two cousins - one that was doing research on the fam at one time, dang
Research on which family?
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.
on ours Linda - he was much older - well all my first cousins were - my mom being youngest of ten and all - but he had been researching the family and I have not yet come across any of his work - and another cousin - his wife used to do it too - have not seen either of them in decades and since I came back to family tree I have not seen any of her trees either - but I do not go to a bunch of sites anymore either

Hello Cousins!

Thanks for hosting, Laura!

Genealogy-wise, I did a bit of follow-up with my cousin who asked about Elwige Rodrigue.  He sent me an original 1914 death notice for my great grandmother, Mathilde Bourgeois Rodrigue.  It's in pretty good shape for a century-old piece of paper.  He also took some pics of the Rodrigue tomb in Donaldsonville, Louisiana.  He skipped the front, though, but maybe I can get him to go back soon.

Otherwise, it was a pretty busy week at work, and the Demon Eddie tempted me with numerous old monster movies, so no new origami or other oddball hobby activity to report.

Cheers,

Herb

Herb you deserve some time to just fave fun!   How are your eyes?  Healed now I hope?
My eyes are great, Laura, thanks for asking!  They have settled into the new normal, which is just shy of 20/20 for anything past arm's length, and $10, 1.5 diopter readers for close up.  I couldn't be more pleased!
That is wonderful news Herb!  So glad everything went well for you!
Also I agree with everyone here Herb.

Finished my first semester of my Master's. Taking a class that starts the beginning of June.

I did a little research on a Woodruff line to see how a DNA cousin relates to me. I ended up piecing together a line that isn't that well put together on any of the public Ancestry trees instead. Victory?

My biological father got his DNA tested with 23andMe and we're waiting for the results to roll in. So very exciting!

NATIONAL DEVIL’S FOOD CAKE DAY

Observed annually on May 19, National Devil’s Food Cake Day is enjoyed by chocolate cake lovers throughout the country and around the world.

Devil’s Food cake is a heavenly chocolate cake.  It differs from a regular chocolate cake by its darker color and tends to be more moist and airy.  Devil’s Food cake recipes use hot or boiling water as the primary liquid. Cocoa is typically utilized in the batter, as opposed to chocolate, and coffee can be added for a distinctive flavor.  A delicious chocolate frosting usually accompanies the cake.

Recipes for Devil’s Food cakes often appeared alongside recipes for Angel Food cakes.  One of the earliest recipes appeared in the August 10, 1898, edition of the Hagerstown Exponent of Hagerstown, Indiana.

Today is also......

HISTORY

It was with the idea for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country that President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish this single holiday. The one-day celebration then stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.  It was on August 31, 1949, that Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force Days.

Parades, open houses, receptions and air shows were held to celebrate the first  Armed  Forces  Day held on May 20, 1950.

  • 1962 – President John F. Kennedy established Armed Forces Day as an official holiday.
  • The United States longest running city-sponsored Armed Forces Day Parade is held in Bremerton, Washington.
  • 2012 – Bremerton celebrated the 64th year of the Armed Forces Day Parade.

As veterans, we’ve seen firsthand the costly price of freedom. Our members know the commitment and determination it takes to protect this great nation, and to help bring peace and prosperity across the globe. Deployed to all corners of the Earth, our armed forces continue to selflessly leave their families and loved ones behind to go wherever and whenever needed ― without hesitation.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Armed Forces Day is a time for all Americans to reflect on the freedoms we have today, and to think about the brave service members who for centuries have provided our country with the very security which makes those freedoms possible.

Through the years, it has been the powerful force of our military men and women tenaciously defending and preserving our way of life who have defined what it means to be courageous ― and today we thank our military for everything they have and continue to do. America is blessed to have true heroes among us.

So if you are a veteran, or active duty member please let us know by posting here!!!!

I'll start, MSG Dorothy M Barry, E-8, retired US Army/Women's Army Corps member. (1968-1988).
Thanks to all our Veterans for your Service!  And thanks to your families for the sacrifices they made and make while you serve.
The LAW requires that you BARBECUE. !   You are obligated to have, on the grill,  steak, baby back ribs, chicken leg quarters, portabella mushrooms .

For dessert, the LAW requires strawberry shortcake , sweet potato pie and honey pecan pie.

Sorry Eddie, we had chinese take out. putting me anywhere near a grill today would be very dangerous, for everybody. Not to mention the rain and thunder.

Dale  !

https://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=bbq&find_loc=Chardon%2C+OH+44024

You are duly chided about your Chinese !

Eddie we had tacos.  It is raining here and they have severe thunderstorm warning with a possibility of 60 mph winds.  Not a great idea to be out at the grill....
Eddie, the closest one on that list is over 7 miles from where we were, AND VERY EXPENSIVE. We were north east of Chardon by about 4 miles and going about the same distance south east of Chardon. The closest one is about 4 miles east of where we got our food. So instead of an 8 mile trip for dinner we would have had a 16 mile trip. She's lucky I went out at all but to double the trip would have been too much.
I still have 5 more days of the pills that limit the time I can be outside.
Miss Laura I got severe ongoing t-storm with tornado watch. I got my little Hitachi grill under the awning of my building. It's only 8 inches tall. The grill, not the awning. . 8-rib slab of baby backs. The X-Treme Kong is very hard-headed about things  ( You can agree. )

Dale, I take back my chide but raise your right hand, make Spock split fingers and swear on the dandelions in your yard to do better on Memorial Day.
Alas we have no awning...
Eddie, I did have a Truman related wedding.  One of my bridesmaids was his niece and one of my husband's friends was his nephew... two different families... and my Grandfather was often mistook for Harry S Truman.  And we are from Missouri.  Does that count at all?
Eddie, sorry I can not even promise to do better Memorial Day, I will not be home for at least a week starting the Friday of that weekend so I am not sure about where or what we will be eating but I will not be grilling myself.
I probably will buy barbque that day to eat by my self because of my dad.I am here late but I am here.

The rashes that my dad had on his back was gone when my mom got there today so that was good but it might come back tomorrow. Mom told me that they are going to transfer my dad by ambulance late tomorrow afternoon to the Sweetwater, Tennessee rehab unless something comes up like it did last weekend and keeps him at the hospital tonight or tomorrow. I was telling mom that Dad's demetia seems to be getting worse and might not go to a plateu any more that it will keep going down hill till he dies. He says silly and crazy things and gets agiated and gets upset and mad at my mom. My mother had to calm him down because he knows that he is going to rehab in Sweetwater, Tennessee for therapy and he was worried that things was not work out but my mother had taken care of that in the first week he was in the hospital. Mother is hoping it will not take long for him to get strong enough to come home in a couple of weeks. I am more realistic about that because of how he did here when we tried to get him to walk he would take a few trips down and up the hall at home then said that he needs to sit down that he was hurting and if we try to get between him and his chair he would get very angry and almost very violent about sitting down. But mom said that she will tell him that he will not come home unless he does what they tell him to do. I told and remind mother how he does us here at home that it might take longer than what she wants and more than 30 days even. I also told her that he might not gain a lot of weight and that we might have to take him off the binders that he needs to take because of the kidney dialysis he takes. Because that we think is causing the diaharra. She says that she has to get a prescription for Imodium for him to take at the rehab. I also told her because of the diahara he might not gain weight and get a lot of strength and might not be able to come home.

Another rained out nature walk. I really was going to go to this one, honest. So you see I am forced to do genealogy!
by Sue Hall G2G6 Pilot (167k points)
Yes, We been getting rained out here almost all this week in Pennsylvania. Although there was times where it stopped but stayed hazy and almost depressing. There better days ahead!
No, no better days. It's the end of the world as we know it. I'm looking for an abandoned missile base to take over. One with horizontal silos. I can grow dandelions and mushrooms for food.
My yard is full of blossoms.  If that grandson doesn't get here with his mower, soon, I can supply you with enough seed to plant the state of Texas.
I hate mowing the flowers. I did get out and mow yesterday, The parts of the back that didn't get mowed are growing really fast. We had a late winter and now everything is making up for lost time.
How about renting some rooms out in the silo?
We have had bouts of rain and one big storm that flew through in the last two days.  It is sunny now!
I know what you mean we have dandelions in our yard since my dad being in the hospital and then we all got allergies that make you not feel good I have mowed but my mom said I need to do it this week when it not raining. So I agree with everyone on this chat here.

Today is...  (this one's easy.. I don't have to look it up lol)

It is my birthday, May 20th. Many many years ago I was born in a small town in Connecticut where I lived for 19 years in the same house. Then I joined the US Army. Moved every two to three years.. places like Fort McClellan, Alabama; Fort Jackson, South Carolina: Thailand;  Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland; Germany; and Fort Benning, Georgia!!

Then I retired and resided in Anniston, Alabama for 7 years, then moved to Anderson, South Carolina, for another 6 years, and then here in Nashville for the last 15 years!!! So I have been many places and seen alot of things. Now I work on line doing research and building my own tree and many other ancestors' trees. People say I should write a book about my experiences but I never got around to doing that. I just share bits and pieces on Facebook and sometimes on here!!

Anyway, if today is your birthday, let us know... we will wish you the best and hope you enjoy your day as well!!  Dorothy B.

Linda,  I know if thoughts and prayers can help your family, there is a
lot coming your way from the wikitree family of readers.  Many of us have
had to deal with these types of problems with our parents or spouses and
know what you are going through.  Know that our well wishes are coming
your way in abundance.
You and your whole family remain on my prayer list.  You are amazing in that you continue to participate here with everything you have going on in your life.  Just know you have people who care.
Laura this is relaxing and a good hobby to have that helps me relax from a hard time. It makes me relax and feel better. Thanks Beulah and Laura. Prayers will be very much appreciated.

So woke up and it was raining - stopped now - pretty happy that I got that LNAB for the first guy who came over that gave mom her maiden name - guess all the ancestors have the same weight really, but it is special as that is the Name one - so some work done on His other children sourcing - not sure if now I will go on with my Massachusetts Bay folks - need a big map so I can figure how everyone spread out up that way - or clean up some of my Canada people - funny how you end up with so many people!

So I have to ask - if anyone is left in this chat - here I am all I have is pencil and paper and wiki - some pdf files saved of course - lots of bookmarks and some spreadsheets I started but no genealogy software - am I dumb? Should I get some? Or get my DNA done?  Not having much extra money I have to decide
by Navarro Mariott G2G6 Pilot (165k points)
There are some free genealogy software packages.  They don't all the bells and whistles but they do work in a bare bones kind of way.  I think LDS has PAF or something like that.  Maybe some people on the chat have used some and know of some.

Navarro, My two cents. I run Legacy 9.0 at home, they have a free version. I would also check your local library. Mine has several services for genealogy including the use of Ancestry at the library and several other programs that I can use online at home by just loging onto their website with my library card.

thanks so much - I figured there would be tips when I finished that closet - still had winter stuff to put up - our spring was so late here!  I will check those out - glad I put all my direct and several of my side families on paper long ago or I would never have got so far here so fast - besides being super lucky that mom's side is all from well documented people - well most of them
I know what you mean Navarro Marriott. I agree with everyone here on this chat Navarro..
