Why can I not add my new grandchild?? It gives me an error message saying I can't do that unless I'm the parent?? Then how did I previously add all the rest of my family/descendants? This doesn't make sense. Please advise. Thank you.

Hi Diana,

I wonder if it is related to the new privacy rules related to the GDPR? WikiTree is taking measures to ensure it remains compliant when the rules become enforceable on May 25.  This is changing how we manage living people. You can find the specific information on G2G if you search for GDPR.

Hi Diana,

Unless one of your granddaughter's parents becomes a member your new grandchild can no longer be added - Laurie is correct, due to the new rules.

Congratulations btw!
I've gotta ask: why would you even want to make a profile for a newborn baby on a public website? Online trees are for recording your deceased relatives. Use an offline program for keeping track of your living family.
Hi J Palotay,

I think many of us use WikiTree to build our family tree, and love isn't the same as genealogy, it doesn't draw a line between the living and those who have passed.

I agree that privacy is an important element of the WikiTree Honour Code.  I also think the honour code includes courtesy, and space to learn.

It appears to me that your opinion has been posted in response to a specific member's question - yet many others have been asking the same questions. I wonder if she really deserves to be singled out by criticism on a public website, or if its possible to bring a little more empathy into the discussion?

Just a question.
Thank you for all your replies, Laurie! I appreciate your information. It was not my intent to cause a ruckus (and have the other person comment as they did)... I was simply asking a question because I didn't understand what was going on. Now I have been updated on this topic and can go on from here. Your information is greatly appreciated!
Laurie, Diana, sorry if I somehow offended, but it was 100% an honest question: why do people want to use a public forum (such as WT or any other online tree) to record private information? It's like using a graphics program as a word processor: it may be made to work, sort of, but it's entirely the wrong tool for the job.

It is related to the new privacy rules going in to effect as a result of the EU changes in their privacy laws. As Laurie mentioned due to GDPR children under the age of 13 will no longer be allowed unless a parent is a member of WikiTree and adds them. Even then, no one who is not on their Trusted List will be able to see them. All profiles of living non -members will be set to Unlisted privacy.
