This question kind of has multiple layers - proper citation, formatting. I'm at a loss where to start.

Hi A,

I would do something like

<ref>
Buchanan, Elenora, Name of Newspaper, Location: Year Published. Page # in possession of  (Your profile ID).
</ref>

May also be noteworthy to try out the Citation Machine

Best of luck

Ah! I see. Many Thanks. The Citation Machine was confusing me!

The purpose of a citation is to aid others in finding the original source (where) and to provide attribution (by whom). The necessary information for citing a newspaper article is:

  • Newspaper name (& Publisher)
  • Date (Year, Month, and Day)
  • Page
  • Title (if available)
  • Place of Publication (City, Province or State, Country)
  • Author (for attribution)
  • Repository - i.e. if you accessed the article online or through a website, the URL, or a library collection.
As for the order, there are numerous different citation styles. Many like the MLA Style and there are tools to help with organizing the formatting according to their guide such as this one: http://www.citationmachine.net/mla8/cite-a-newspaper/manual . Of course, other citation styles can be used; they are just an aide to communicating clearly to others by formatting the information in an appropriate fashion.

For clippings, I would recommend transcribing the contents (particularly if it's an older article) directly into the biography if it's old enough that it's out of copyright or that copyright probably "doesn't matter". Some of my profiles have a section just for this. You can make a block quote by placing a colon ( : ) before the text that you want indented.
