HI!

My name is Mardi Allen Benedict and my father is Herbert Ethan Allen Jr.  My father was always told that he was a decendant of Ethan Allen.  I was wondering if his DNA type is public record?  I just had mine analyzed by 23 and me and would be very interested in finding out if I am really related.  My haplogroup is a J2b1b.  any help is appreciated!  Thank you!

My email address is -email address removed-

Thank you so much!

Hi Mardi,

The best place to start would be to trace your grandfather's paternal branch back as far as you can. Since Ethan Allen is a very well documented ancestor, you may not have to go back very far to find an obvious connection. If you have a local DAR chapter, you may be able to get help from them.

If there is no connection through his father, try his mother.

WikiTree is an ideal place to do this type of research, because you can collaborate with other Allen researchers and benefit from the work already put into Ethan Allen's profile. Please consider joining us!

As a side note, assuming you have XX chromosomes, your haplogroup would be your maternal haplogroup, inherited from your mother and her mother and so on. Unless you are descended from Ethan Allen's mother or one of his sisters, it wouldn't be useful in proving a relationship. If your father or any living brothers of yours or his can take a DNA test, and you can use that information for determining a patrilineal relationship.

Hi!  Hope you join us!

If your father, his brothers, his nephews, etc. are willing and able to do a yDNA test, that may prove or disprove if you have a paternal genetic link to Ethan Allen.  The test would have to be on a living male Allen because the yDNA is passed from father to sons, father to sons, in a relatively unchanged state.

You might contact the Allen Project administrator at FTDNA to see if they have tested other male descendants of Ethan Allen.  http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Allen
