Can I adopt an orphaned profile to earn a pre-1500 badge?

I adopted the orphaned profile of Stephen of Sancerre [1133-1191 in Acre] wanting to work on it to earn a pre-1500 badge. Is that permitted?

I shouldn’t think so, but if you earn your pre-1500 badge you would then be able to work on the profile.

I think you've got it round the wrong way.  You need to have the pre-1500 badge *before* you can work on pre-1500 profiles.  You need to have a pre-1700 profile that you are proud of, not a pre-1500.  Perhaps you would like to re-read this:

You can certainly research this person, post comments to the profile (in this case it is only mildly useful, since you're the manager), and discuss Etienne de Sancerre on G2G, but you won't be able to edit the profile until you have the pre-1500 badge. You will have to rely on other people to improve the profile.

There are criteria for receiving the pre-1500 certification (see Ros's reply above) and having adopted pre-1500 profiles is not one of them.
