CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Don't call it a comeback! We've been here for years! Posting the Weekend chat early as I have some errands to do. With me this week on drums is the lovely and talented Charlotte Shockey! On lead guitar is David Selman! And on keyboard is Laura Bozzay!

Have fun and I'll be back to check on ya, later!
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (764k points)
But what are we going to call ourselves? :)
Blood and Thunder!!!

Edit: Nah. I'll think of a band name later.
Hmmmm not sure I'm feeling that one. :D

Blood & Roots? Trying to think genealogy LOL
Blood and Roots?  Possible. We can't use :"We are Groot". The mouse would have our heads. How about "Shadows of the Past"?
ooh that does sound "rock" LOL better than my Genealogy Rocks! LOL

A wonderful quote I found in some online research the other day: “No one should omit the very easy and important matter of keeping a record of who he is, who his blood relatives are, and who his forefathers and mothers were. The most lamentable ignorance exists on this subject with few exceptions. Very few can tell the maiden names of grandmothers or given names of either grandparents. Back of that generation, all is fog.”

What about naming yourselves Friendly Family Genealogy Rockers.
Hmm. Probably too long.
What about Genealogy Rockers or Family Genealogy Rockers or Friendly Genealogy Rockers.
Eh....We'll think on it.

Tips

1. Libraries are not only places to go and research, but many have online access to US Census records, Fold3, and other historical and genealogical focused packages.  Check with yours to see what online wonders your library card might grant you.   In foreign countries libraries and local history organization often have online resources as well.

2. US Library of Congress has a lot to offer and they do interlibrary loans.  You might want to explore what is available online from them:  http://eresources.loc.gov/

3. Look for local history and genealogy sites as they often have obscure and hard to find pieces of information.

4. Many universities have sections devoted to local history and people who lived in the area or attended the university.
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (764k points)
Thanks Chris for the tips there are awesome.

Welcome everyone to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.
Not my tips. Those are Laura's.
I enjoy seeing the weekly tips, there is always such good information.
Chris, another good source is some States have websites with links to genealogy sites at the county level. From this I found that Cleveland, Ohio was once in the Connecticut Western Reserve and after Ohio was formed it was first in Trumbull County then Geauga County and finally in Cuyahoga County, The City din not move but the borders did.
Neat. New England records depend on each state. Mass is easy. NH is a little tricky.
I have also found that the genealogy section at the library and the local history and genealogy societies often have researchers who will help you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut_Western_Reserve

from a link in connecticut colony via the world famous US HISTORICAL PLACE NAMES

So yes, part of Ohio WAS claimed by connecticut

Thank you Chris! *tap tap* is this mic on?! LoL I’m about to head off to work here soon. TGIF! Started the slow move to my parents new house. Bummed but just another step towards a better future. Or, at least I’m trying to look on the bright side of things like getting to see my parents more! Just don’t know about this pack rat downsizing. LoL
by Charlotte Shockey G2G6 Pilot (982k points)
Downsizing is hard. Especially for genealogists. I have books and multiple boxes of stuff. Some of it I could probably recycle as it is not available in digital format, or digitize it and save it here on WikiTree, but.....
You could always put books on the ceiling! And yes the mic is on. Let's jam.

Like I have any actual musical skill. Eh, Whatever.
You know those space bags that suck the air out when you put bulking sweaters and stuff into them?  They work for papers too!  I also recommend scanning or using your camera on your phone to photograph the pages of a book you want to use for research.  You can do that if it is for yourself and you own the book.  It is a back up copy.  Then you can put the book in storage in the basement or attic.  Last time I moved it took a 14 foot truck just to move my books and primary source materials. That was in 1994... sigh yes I have more....
I agree with everyone except Chris. I will have to start dealing with moving into my sisters old house this year and at first of next year. We haven't moved anywhere since 1995 Laura so I know what you mean Good Luck Charlotte.

Welcome everyone to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.
I was joking, ya know. You can't put books on the ceiling.

Yet.
Putting things on wikitree was part of the plan of getting rid of paper. But have I sorted through those notebooks yet? Certainly those printouts of the tree can be recycled?
But, But, But getting rid of GENEALOGICAL STUFF?? Yeah, I have a ton of stuff that is now redundant or needs to be organized. Big problem is a 99% of it was copied, printed, and found by my mom. Who is now sending me hints from the Library in the sky. There is a bunch I can just verify I have entered and find a digital copy and then recycle. But I remember spending hours with her in the library side by side at the microfilm reader, trying to find someone in a census. Guess that's what I'll keep and ditch the paper. But it ain't easy.
I wish some of my aunts and grandparents would send me some hints from the Library in the Sky or from our ancestors. :) I keep hoping though.

Today is.....

NATIONAL HEAT AWARENESS DAY

National Heat Awareness Day is observed each year on the last Friday in May.  Resulting in numerous fatalities each year, heat exhaustion and dehydration due to heat are some of the leading weather-related killers in the United States.

  • 1980 heat wave claimed 1,250 lives
  • 1995 heat wave killed more than 700 lives in Chicago (the deadliest weather event in Chicago history)
  • 2003 August, record heat wave in Europe claimed an estimated 50,000 lives

Most American summers see heat waves in one or more parts of the United States.  Some regions of the country have both high temperatures and high humidity. However, some of the worst heat waves have been dry.

The following advisories may be issued from the National Weather Service:

  • Excessive Heat Outlooks
  • Excessive Heat Watches
  • Excessive Heat Warning/Advisories

Take these precautions when heat advisories are issued: stay hydrated (drink lots of water), avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks and extra sugar,  avoid over exertion and find a cool place to stay.

Note from my neck of the woods inTennessee: Just this past Wednesday we had a death from the heat, a child was left in a car during the day.

https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2018/05/23/infant-dies-after-being-left-truck-east-nashville-hot-car-death/639676002/

According to San Jose State University meteorologist Jan Null's website noheatstroke.org, Tennessee is among the top 10 states for death of children due to hot vehicles, claiming 25 deaths from 1998-2018.  In all, 749 children have died as result of vehicular heat stroke since 1998. Aside from crashes, heatstroke is the leading cause of death in vehicles for children age 14 years and younger.

So please, check on children and pets left in vehicle, if at all possible take them with you. Don't think leaving the air conditioner on, or windows cracked will keep them cool, it won't.

A PSA from a local animal shelter made the following little jingle:

If it's 70 or over, DON'T take Rover! (and leave him in the car, even with the windows cracked.)
Thanks Dorothy and Katrina for great hot weather tips.

I would add carry cool water to keep hydrated.
Ditto to what everyone said here on this chat here.

OK last friday I mentioned having a 1st to 2nd cousin DNA Match (at FT DNA) for whom I could not find any names in common, and Cornwall, county in England was the only place we had in common. And Laura Bozzay said that maybe there was an NPE. Turns out there was no NPE - other than my mother.

But since I am looking for a missing grandfather I have no idea where he came from at all.

This 1C-2C DNA Match was descended from a certain Irish couple who emigrated from Ireland to NZ in  1876 along with his parents, his siblings and his children. Lets call her Mary.

She also had a second cousin also descended from this same irish couple, and was also showing up on my matches list - and he was in the top 10.   We can call him Larry.

In the back of my mind, there is a voice that says, please dont be irish, please dont be irish, please dont be irish... Ireland is not one of my favourite countries.

So I uploaded my DNA data to my heritage and the top match was a 1C1R to 4th cousin. We can call him John.We shared 440 cM of DNA - the biggest shared amount I have seen yet. When I looked at his tree - guess what!! He too was also descended from this same irish couple who emigrated to NZ in 1876.

It looks like my missing grandfather was irish or part irish anyway.

John has put up a pretty good tree.

If John is a 1C1R from me, then it stands to reason that he is 1C to my mother right?

So Johns descent from the Irish family who emigrated to NZ was through one of their daughters. Her name was Ellen. Ellen had married and had 3 sons and 6 daughters herself. Most of this generation has now passed, but their children - my mothers generation, are still alive albeit getting older. My mother is in her 80s and John was listed as being in his 70s.

So, now we are waiting for my mothers DNA kit to arrive. It was procured by me from the DNA Quest pro-bono program being run by My herotage for adoptees.

IF mums results come back as 1C to John,  then one of his uncles was my grandfather. The location and age are all correct. 2 of Johns uncles were married and had children. I dont think they would have had an affair. The 3rd uncle never married, and could be my grandfather.

I am thinking that if we can get one child from each of the other 2 brothers to test, and if they come back as 1C to my mother then we know the unmarried uncle was my grandfather. If one of them comes back as a half-sibling, then I swear, all hell will break loose.

We will then have 2 possible reason for why my grandfather did not marry my grandmother. 1 - that family are catholics, and my grandmothers family was protestant, and never the twain shall meet. 2 - my grandfather was already married and thus unable to marry my grandmother.

It would be helpful to have these tests done to hopefully eliminate the married brothers.

So now we are in limbo. Cannot do anything further until we get my mothers DNA results back.

I have put the irish family (who emigrated to NZ) on wikitree, creating several profiles.

by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Robynee you've done a lot of work!  This is all very plausible.  When you get the results back hopefully they will give you what you need.

Did your test show this was an X match by any chance (or some companies call it chromosome 23)  That can not come from a father to a male son but it can go to a female child.
Have to pay extra for an X-match so I didnt do that.

My original test was with FT DNA so I might be able to pay for that extra, if its available without having to do the whole mtDNA test.
FTDNA includes it with autosomal
Welcome everyone to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.
Laura, I cannot find anything that says I have an X Match. Would you know where I have to look for it?
When you look at the matches on FTDNA for autosomal tests there is a column marked X it is after the columns where they show the CMs in total and the expected relationship.  It gives the cms or an X if there is an X match.
Yes I see those but there is no X match to my second cousin Mary that I have mentioned above. Most of the X-matches come from women in the USA who are 4th or 5th cousins. Those that have trees dont go back far enough to make any connections.

So far Mary is the only person on FT DNA who has a good tree that goes back far enough that I can see how we are connected.
Ok.  If there was an X it would help to eliminate your father's father's side.

Not having one does not mean anything because of recombant DNA.  You can have 2 siblings... say even fraternal twins where one gets the X and the other does not.

Just looking for a way to help you narrow things down.

One thing I would do is if you have uploaded the raw data to GedMatch, look to see if any of your matches have WIKI or GED in the Wiki / Ged column.  That means you have trees to look at.

Besides running the one to many report, I would take Mary's ID and yours and Run the People Who Match One or 2 Kits report.  That will show you all the matches you have in common.

I would wait a week or two though because GedMatch is requiring people to accept terms of service to enter the site now.  If they are living their data is being hidden until they comply so you may have more matches that are not going to be visible until everyone logs in and accepts the new terms and conditions.
I just ran my one to one report and the column that used to show Wiki and GED is missing all data.  So you no longer can see trees.  I do hope this is temporary....  FALSE ALARM...I refreshed the screen and they show up now... thankfully!
Mary and her brother are both on Gedmatch - and they are both also my top 2 matches at gedmatch!!. John is not on Gedmatch at all - I dont see his name anywhere!!

Proper post time. I was asked to do the weekend chat as Laura was unable to make it. That's fine. She's got business to take care of and I'll be the substitute with Charlotte. We'll be keeping an eye on things and making sure things go smoothly!

Hope everyone is doing good. I had a sort of epiphany regarding some genealogy stuff. I talked to a 4th to 6th cousin match on Ancestry and she said that her grandmother was with a Sicilian border and that was our connection.

Problem. My family isn't from Sicily. CLOSE. But, no. So, I ran the numbers through DNApainter.com and found that our link could be one of my great-grandfather's brothers. One brother stayed in San Pietro a Maida. We don't know if any others moved out of town or came to the US and went back. My great-aunt wouldn't know.

The timetable is weird. The grandmother got pregnant in the 30s by a Sicilian who was a border of hers in Vermont. My grandfather and his family lived in Haverhill, Mass. Quite distant. So, who knows. The tip here is to take family lore with a grain of salt and use DNA painter to see what's really going on.

Another tip I have is to present evidence calmly when someone says something you have might be in error. On Ancestry I had a lady tell me I had an error in the tree. I pointed to this site and a couple other sources politely. Handle things calmly and if that doesn't work drop a train on 'em.

Hope you all have a good weekend. I helped the 'rents plant the garden and now I gotta do that other thing that I do.
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (764k points)
Chris I have relatives who swear I am from outer space!  Have they figured out how to test alien DNA yet?

Seriously, good work on what you are figuring out.
Need to find one to test it properly. I'll get S.E.T.I. on it. =)

Hello Cousins!

Thanks to Chris and the band for hosting!

Back at the genealogy, I added a few more Rodrigue nth great aunts and uncles this week, along with a mix of helpfulness and potstirring in G2G.

Looking forward to a beautiful sunny thankful and reflective long Memorial Day weekend.  Here's to all the fallen, to whom we owe so much.

Cheers,

Hi Herb,  I am looking forward on working on my family in June.  Hope you have a great long weekend and yes we need to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their life in our defense but also remember their families and friends.

Thanks to everyone who is serving now or has served in defense of others.
Yeah, we'll be opening for Aerosmith this weekend. =) Welcome to the chat!
I agree with everyone on this chat too.

Welcome everyone to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.
LoL you didn't tell me about us opening for Aerosmith, Chris! Geez... now I have to go change to meet them! LOL
Don't worry about it. Casual clothes are fine. I don't think they want us showing up in suits. These aren't the Rolling Stones.
Hmm no still feel I need something rockin! :) LOL
Hmm......Leopard print pants, leather top and bandanna it is!

Hi, I'm relatively new on wikitree. I just joined in April. I am putting my familytree in profile by profile and learnt down the road how to source them. I started with everyone after 1800 and want to finish sourcing those before I go into the more difficult categories before 1800. At least that's the way it is here in the Netherlands.

I did my first challenge this month and it helped enormously in learning how wikitree works.

I love the community and the working together. It motivates me a lot. It does help that I'm a bit competitive.

I already connected with an emigrated branch and hope to find more connections. Even motivated some cousins to participate.

I do notice that the bulk of people is from the USA. Nothing miss with that but sometimes stuff is a bit US-centered. I do understand why but if you strife for one big familytree it is something to think about.
by Eef van Hout G2G6 Pilot (187k points)
Welcome to Wikitree! =D Your tree looks pretty good so far. and congrats on your award! Keep up the good work!

I do agree that there is a lot of people from the US on Wikitree. It can't be helped, unfortunately. But, we do have people here from Canada, the UK, France,  New Zealand and Italy here working on the world tree. They're around. You just need to know where to look.

In the Italian Roots project alone we have people working on the Italian side connecting immigrant ancestors to the mother country. I have also created a ton of profiles for my family who came from Italy.

There are also people in France working with the French Roots and Quebecois projects to find the common link and putting the pieces together. They've helped me out.

The world tree is growing and the site is very welcoming of everyone from all over the world. Is it US centric? A little. But, with your help and the help of others in Europe we can bridge the gaps wherever they may be.

Yep it is more US centered because currently that is where the largest number of members are from.  But that is changing and we would welcome you to do something with a more international flair here on the Weekend Chat!  There is so much to learn about other cultures and most Americans have relatives spread all over the world.

I love the way we all pitch in to help each other and can learn from each other.  By the way one of our Leader is from your neck of the world... Bea and one of the other Integrators Astrid is from your part of the world too. So feel free to post about things that are important to you.

We all love food and often share recipes!  Cardamom is used a lot I think in Scandinavian baking.

Here is a chicken recipe:

Cardamom & Honey Chicken Bake

Marinade

  • 4 Tbsp honey
  • 2 Tbsp sherry, brandy, or cognac or honey mead
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Whole chicken cut up or 4 to 6 chicken breasts

Combine marinade ingredients in a large bowl.  Drop chicken pieces in stirring to coat them well.  Place in a warmed oven set to 170 F  or  77 C for about 30 minutes

In a large casserole dish

·        2 Tbsp Olive oil

·        1 lemon, thinly sliced

Add marinated chicken.

 Sprinkle into mixture

  •  1 tsp of salt
  •  1 tsp of green peppercorns

Bake at 400 F  or  204 C for about 20 to 30 minutes or until the chicken reaches 165 F or 74 C in a thick part of the chicken.  Then it is done.

Welcome to WikiTree and the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Hi Cousins,

Well this week I been working hard at getting back into the swing of things with my responsibilities on wikitree. My my the emails..... I been enjoying it though so it not like a heartache. So I highly looking forward on getting my DNA test mailed to me. I feel like I'm standing next to the mail-box but such is life things never come fast enough when you expecting them. Well that's all for now. Perhaps next weekend or in a later post will do some pictures.

I also want to thank all the Veterans who have served and who are serving. We coming up on memorial day here in the United States and I hope we don't lose sight of the sacrifice that was shared by many.

Steve,

I hope you find some answers. Checked out the profile and I really hope this test gets you some results. After you get it done on Myheritage, I suggest you upload to Ancestry and anywhere else. That way you may get the biggest scope possible. It won't cost a thing. It's still weird to me that you can download DNA. Still, man, I wish you luck. =D
Steve register with the Adoption Angels Project if you want help.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Adoption_Angels

Several of us on the Weekend Chat are also adoption angels.

I had one lady that sent me her info.  I did an obit search and found the woman she had listed as a Grandmother.  Boom.  The obit listed all the children and grandchildren and where they lived.  She called me within 48 hours and said she had contacted her family and she was thrilled.  Most take a lot longer than that.  But sometimes you get lucky...

If you are in the US we still can see info on living people in some places. UE countries this is going to be really hard going forward.
Welcome everyone to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Is there any DNA Tests that are free.
I'm already apart of adoption angels I'm about 80% sure of my mothers identity however never called her. I only have a first name for my father but I carried my mother's last name. Yeah I reckon I will never move from USA.
Linda

I saw a post back awhile ago myheritage was giving out free test and said heck why not so I applied I guess I won the lottery
You never know, man.
Linda,

My Heritage were giving away free DNA kits to those ADOPTEES who wanted to find their biological families. The application period has now closed.

Like Steve I applied on behalf of my mother who was adopted, and I was lucky enough to win a free kit for my mother.
I heard from one of my adoptees that she has received her results.  She also got a free kit.  She is thrilled.  Now the work begins again....
Yeah I'm looking forward to that work though. I don't know how far this curiosity will go but I'm in it for the fight
Good and you have some amazing people here on WikiTree who can read this stuff if you get stumped.

Wishing everyone a great weekend!

I grew up in a small town (about 500 people) and remember the "Decoration Day" volunteer fire department parades. The most vivid memory, however, is picking flowers from the garden and visiting the cemeteries. My mother and aunt would be proud that I'm still visiting dead relatives, albeit virtually.

We returned from our brief trip to pick up the RV, then gathered with friends and family. Wow, three weeks with poor to middling WIFI sure does get you behind on genealogy. (I've also been trying to find random folks with no death date, finding sources and adding death, but that is in the past now.) I've been doing the 52 Ancestors, and those three weeks were hard ones. First there was Close Up, which of course made me think of my aunt who was more of a grandmother. After spending a day or so creating her profile, I decided to save her for a grandmother prompt and just did a gg grandfather and the succeeding 5 generations who remained with 10 miles.

After close, there was Mother's Day. I had already used Mom for one, so arbitrarily picked an orphaned ggg grandmother who married, had 9 children, died and gave her a brief bio and sources.

Then we come to Another Language. Well, I wasn't going to branch to a uncle by marriage but Uncle Fritz did teach me to count to 10 in German. He also taught me to swear in German, much to my Aunt's chagrin. I haven't done a blog for him yet, and will probably review his profile, which is here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Schultz-4531 For anyone interested in Camillus knives, there are a couple of links on his profile, since his family came from Germany to work in the knife factory.

Finally there is Military. So I had to create yet another profile, and his son, my second cousin. Woohoo, first related profile with his own Wikipedia page. That's my first time trying any categories, but I had to add his Navy Cross. Anyone who would like to pretty up the profile for Col Robert Donald Taplett, who commanded the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment at the the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War, I thank you....https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Taplett-2

Cool stories! Welcome to the chat!
Once again I am weeks behind...  June is my target to get my life back...

I think the last one I did was a month ago.   I really like this process I just have trouble doing it on a schedule.  Hopefully that will clear up soon...
I know what you mean Laura my was months ago. I do really like this process I also just have trouble doing it on a schedule since real life is really getting in my way with my dad. I am months behind. Also what Chris says go with me. Welcome to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Dorothy caught my fat fingered typo....  I just fixed Chris's name.  Sorry about that!   At least it was a good name, not a bad one!

With great power comes great responsibility. =)

I'm glad I could chip in. Any time you need help, let me know!
Don't forget you can add another sticker on your profile  if you want to!
Sweet! =D
I agree with Laura and also Chris. Laura you meant on the first word as Chris not Christ is your super hero of the week. I hope you don't take offense on this Laura.

Welcome everyone to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.
That's fine. =) Not the first time that's happened.
No offense taken.  Dorothy sent me an email.  I fixed it.  I need to slow down but then I get panicked that I won't get all the stuff I have to do done...

Greeting from Brightlingsea, Essex, England

Today is big day for the  Brightlingsea Lido - our outdoor swimming pool. After alot of work on the many aspects of running a swimming pool, we had our VIP Night prior to opening this weekend.

After an official opening by the Town Mayor the celebration cake was cut and served along with glasses of Cava. As well as local dignitaries many of the volunteers involved were also invited. We are looking forward to a good summer with plenty of activity at the pool.

Have a good weekend everyone.....

The good news is I am feeling better. The bad news is there are still some test results that have not come back from my doctor, but he said he does not need to see me until November. On the genealogy front I have actually been able to find death dates for some of the Unlisted profiles I manage and not only opened them up fut set them free. The bad news is it is only 3 so far and I am going to be limited until next Friday because I am watching a family members 7 animals and fish.

Small steps, Dale. Take it easy.

You can always assume death dates to trick the system. Add 100 years from their births. Or 110.
Not going to "trick" the system Chris. Besides the ones I found a death date for were born less than 100 years ago.
Sounds like a miniature army. #Chore-time
Steve it is more like a Zoo. 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 gerbils, and a rabbit.
Whatever works, man. =) Take it easy.
Sounds like a heart attack
Dale I was able to find death dates on several of the ones I adopted.  But I want to do more sourcing in June bu at least with the death dates in you can see them.  So I know how much work that was to find 3.  Each of mine took longer than an hour each.

You do have a mini zoo!  Have fun!
I agree with everyone here on this chat.

This weekend in the United States we are honoring our heroes who gave their all through various church services, memorial services and veterans honoring their own at local and county veterans parks; especially Monday May 28th. Here are some photos of ours here in my local area:

So I am hoping many of you will consider in addition to picnic outings, time on the lake, barbecuing in the back yard etc that you would attend one of these in your particular area. Also if you have photos of one of your Memorial Day programs from last year etc, please feel free to share.

And please for the love of God make sure the animals are okay before the fireworks go off. Cats and dogs hate those things.

Have a good Memorial Day!
adding also, please don't leave them (or small children or infants)  in a hot car during the festivites or memorial services.
PS: Fireworks are usually for the 4th of July. Taps and 21- gun salutes are for memorial services, just saying.
....Not in this town, Dorothy.

Live free or Die. Or cause explosions. XD

People have set off fireworks here on Memorial Day. Gotta love the granite state!
Anybody sets off fireworks in my 'hood, we call five-oh and/or go Death Wish on their backsides.  Extreme drought conditions and severe fire restrictions in place.  Memorial Day weekend always makes me a bit edgy.
Both my Father and my Father in Law were in WWII.  I plan to visit their graves this weekend.
Welcome everyone to the Memorial Day WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Found this and thought it spoke volumes. Please remember "not" to say Happy Memorial Day because for some it is a day for remembrance and reflection, which may include some grief and sorrow, for the loss of those they may have served with or for a close relative.

Ok, so where was I that I had to in a panic ask someone to host the Weekend Chat?  I am in the middle of closing our spice company.  Both my business partner and I have had a series of family and personal health issues that have been keeping us from really devoting the time it takes to run a company the right way.  We decided it was time to close it.  We had a really big show and sold out of so many things that it was a good time for us to close... we were way down on raw product inventory after making all the blends for that show and way down on blended inventory after the show.  This was not an easy decision for us but it comes to the point where you have to do what is right for your families and for yourself.  Because our insurance ends on May 31 and so does our webhosting agreement it put us into a tizzy to notify clients and to start moving things out of the commercial kitchen where we had were paying rent.   So I have been bogged down with all the closing details.

I have more to da but the majority of the critical stuff we need to do will be done by the 31st.   Then we can take our time and sell off the shelving units, the show cases, and other equipment.

After everything is sod then we need to do a final sales tax return and a final filing with the IRS ad close the company with the government agencies.  But all that is not under a time crunch like this part was.

I was busy prior to date adopting a ton of folks with no death dates born 1900 through current time that had surnames I cared about.  And I was sourcing death dates for anyone I could.  Then last week we made this decision and it has been full speed to closing.

But I will have more of a life as a result.  Sometimes life gets in the way of doing things you love.  I will miss all the interaction with my clients.  I will also miss the developing of new tastes and spice blends.  We had a loyal following and I am hoping we can sell some of the recipes to people who want to pick up where we left off.

So once again, a huge thanks to Chris who stepped in and made this chat a great one!  So glad we have such wonderful folks on WikiTree!

Just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. =) Was no problem!
As I am working through thousands of emails (since my work email system goes away with the website on May 31)  I noticed Spider Man 3 was on TV today.
Sigh...That movie. Here's a pallet cleanser:

An Update, where I am staying they had 3 new homes delivered by truck last evening. They got one onto the lot last night but it tied up several streets for over 3 hours and took down the cable lines, where we get internet here. Today they moved the second one to it's lot with the same problems and they are going to try the third this evening. It will be moving past where we are shortly and hopefully not affect the cable, but you never know, so I could lose my connection at any time. But hey it is fun to watch. over the next week they will be removing the wheels and axles and getting them down on the blocks as well as hooking up the utilities. the biggest problem there will be a lot of extra trucks on the street while they work. All said I will check in when I can but with the pet sitting and possible loss of internet don't worry if I disappear for some time

Due to low hanging lines they can only move as fast as the man who uses his wooden pole to hold up the lines crossing the road can walk, so it is a pretty slow pace indeed.
Never a dull moment!
You are right Laura.

Happy week end to all!

I was in Pinehurst, NC last week and saw the most interesting squirrels. They looked like a cross between little bears & Ewoks...very friendly, too.
