Familysearch.org shows Edward Doty's (1598-1655) parents as being John Douty & Ann Holland. True?

Could you please be more specific when you say "familysearch.org"? It's a huge site with many sources. Perhaps you could copy and paste the URL of the web page you were looking at, at the time you saw this information. That will help others better assess the value of the information there. Thanks.

Massachusetts Find A Grave says that is true. However, this source is not always verified.

The following info is from MayflowerHistory.com which refutes Find A Grave:

 

Edward Doty's English origins have not yet been discovered. Some sources claim he was baptized on 14 May 1598 in either Dudlick, Shropshire or "Thurburton Hills", Suffolk. I have investigated these in English records, and found both to be fictitious.

However, there is a real Edward Doty baptized on 3 November 1600 at East Halton, co. Lincoln, England, son of Thomas Doty. The Doty families of East Halton are regularly using the names Thomas, Edward, and John: the first three names Mayflower passenger Edward Doty assigned to his children. Even if this particular Edward Doty is not the Mayflower passenger himself, I suspect he may have still originated from amongst this general Lincolnshire Doty family.

Find-a-Grave should be used for clues to further research. Like many contributions at familysearch.org and ancestry.com, the information found there is user-contributed and needs to be verified.

Please see http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Doty-42. This is what our research by WikiTree participants has found. Since there is no proof of the parents, we removed them from the profile and gave an explanation.

Did you find the info on FamilySearch in the Historical Records Collection? If not do not accept what is considered trash on the internet.. Please  Verify,Verify, Verify.

Laura, that's why I asked Patricia to provide a specific link. The problem with both Familysearch.org and Ancestry.com is that they provide both historical records and user-contributed records, and it's not always clear to the beginner viewer how to distinguish them. Drives me a bit bonkers that those services -- as well as find-a-grave.com -- don't make it clearer when a viewer is looking at user-contributed data.

Researcher just need to learn to read the info out there. Findagrave is all contributer donated. FamilySearch is so big, but it does have lots of info about the collections.They have a great wiki. Ancestry.com files are pretty well marked, we know public trees are from contributors. I have worked at a Family History center for over 30 years. As new PC programs came to our PCs they had menu bars top and bottom, but people failed to read them. I am old now and the technology is moving so fast it is hard to keep up. We have to read. If we don't feel the websites are self-explanitory then we need to Google our questions. :-)
