Mother of his first two children - unknown Indian.

Question

My grandmother had always said we had Native American ancestors. I found a DNA match that lists her as Unknown Indian. She deserves a name. All the answers would be on the 1890 census but... He remarried in 1891 and had 7 more children. Annie and her brother George W. just seem to have no past before the 1900 census. Supposedly the mother and Jonus grew up together. That's all I know. I just need a push in the right direction.

You're very welcome. More research will be necessary to confirm Mary Hubbard's parentage, but at the very least you have a name. Some other researchers have this Mary Hubbard married to a man named Johnson. There is a marriage record for a Mary Jane Hubbard and James Johnson in Laurel County. It's possible the one you're looking for was from another nearby county or the one who married James Johnson could be from another county.

I was checking some before heading to work and it looks like there was another Annie Black in the same area but with a birth date that is less than a year off.

It's frustrating because I hate to think my grandmother was making up stories too. Lol

What I wouldn't give for that 1890 census.

Get used to made up stories from grandma who may have gotten the story from someone earlier who Made it up. I have several family legends that my research has debunked.  It happens.
