Check the index of One Name Studies to see if the surname you're researching already has a project on WikiTree.  If it does, post a message on the study's page asking to join.

If it does not yet have a study, follow the instructions on the following pages to create one:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:One_Name_Studies_FAQ_Page

Then click ANSWER on this post and introduce yourself, with a link to your study's page.  We'll get you set up with a badge and a redirect on your surname's genealogy page!

I was just checking the index, and noticed in the T one-name studies, there are a number of listing that start with The ___________ One Name Study.  Anyone looking for the name won't find it, as the names don't actually start with a T.  Not sure how people can fix this; just bringing it to attention.
Thank you for bringing it to my attention.  I'm afraid it's going to have to go onto the pile of other ONSs where people have made errors in creating their Study.  I'll get to them! but I'm not promising it'll be tomorrow... :)

I would like to join. I created the Gibbs One name study but need help setting it up properly. Thank you
by Andrew Simpier G2G6 Pilot (681k points)
I am confused.  You have the ONS badge, you have the redirect to the GIBBS Surname Index - the rest is down to you i.e. what you want to study, how you want to study it etc.  Have another read of the ONS Project page.

I have created a Klapperich Name Study

The project will include the frequent variations such as Klepperich, Klapperick, Klapprich.  We did some of the work elsewhere but we think Wikitree is a better platform.  I'm still learning to use it.

Because we're also doing a DNA project we've identified the immigrant branches by their direct ancestor in Rhineland. There are about 10 major branches in the USA, thus 10 groups.  Should we use categories as the preferred sorting?  Like Line Anton, Klapperich Name Study.  We have these charted and I've made a project page for each line.  Is that the correct approach so new users could identify their branch?

I thnk I used the wrong template.  Here's the page:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Klapperich

Thank you for the help,

Robin Rainford

Unfortunately, though you used the right template the second time around, you did not name it properly so that the URL is correct.

You need to create a totally new page and call it Klapperich Name Study.  This is very important. You can rename it to anything you want later on, but it needs to be Klapperich Name Study at first so that the URL is properly formed.

And do not delete any of the categories, as I see you have done with the second go.

Then you need to merge
Space:Klapperich into Space:Klapperich Name Study
AND
Space:Klapperich_Klapperick_Klaprich into Space:Klapperch Name Study

by using this
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:MergeSpace

Then add Space:Klapperich Name Study to this G2G answer so that Sarah can create the necessary redirect.

All tasks compete. Merges finished, new page is Space:Klapperich Name Study   link

Ready for Sarah and also my question about adding categories for specific branches of this Klapperich group, Like Line Anton, Klapperich Name Study.  We have these charted and I've made a project page for each line.  Is that the correct approach so new users could identify their branch?

I have sent a Trusted List request for access, because there are still a couple of errors I can fix.

I created a category page for you (did you see that one of your categories was red, indicating there was something wrong/left to do? - it's green now).  This is where you would see the different subcategories such as Line Anton, Kapperich Name Study, and all the profiles contained within it.  It is entirely up to you whether you create a freespace page to go with each line.

You have a link to a .ged which doesn't preview.  I think you need to fix that.  Your new category page will help a lot.

Hello Ros, I'm not seeing how to edit the category page and/or add categories--directions say I can by overriding the warning but they don't appear.

I merged Space:LINE_ANTON into a new single page for all the lines called Klapperich Line Branches since it seems like overkill at this point to make one for each.

So can I add these Line categories and Location categories?  And can they be attractively arranged as the example, in descending order?  Many thanks

You do not have to edit the category page.  It gets populated automagically when you put the categories on the individual profiles.  See my Haywood Name Study category page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Haywood_Name_Study

and click on any one of the profiles in a subcategory to see how I have done it.

They can't be arranged; the system puts them in alphabetical order. (This is something WikiTreers have been begging for for ages!)  The 'attractively arranged in descending order' is actually how they are arranged in the category tree, not on the category page.

Thank you for fixing that!  Today I checked the list of one name studies and Klapperich isn't there--I would have sworn it was there earlier?

It's still there.  I haven't seen it disappear.  In fact, I am looking at it as we 'speak'.  The only thing that disappeared was the incorrectly-named one.

Hi Sarah,

I'd like to join the project. My first one name study is Meads.

Thanks,

Martin

You're all set, Martin!

Thanks Sarah! smiley

Hi Sarah. I've also created three more, Cadley, Catley & Jeatt

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Cadley%20Name%20Study

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Catley%20Name%20Study

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Jeatt%20Name%20Study

The Cadley and Catley studies will be cross-referenced to each other

Since you are cross-ferencing, [[Category:One Name Studies]] should be on at least one of the Cadley or Catley ONSs, preferably both.
Redirects are now set up for Cadley, Catley and Jeatt

Hello,

The One Name Study project caught my interest after I watched the video with Doug Lockwood and I have created a page for Nimsgern Name Study https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Nimsgern_Name_Study

Nimsgern is the maiden name of my maternal grandmother, I have always thought this to be an uncommon surname, especially here in the USA. I have been very successful in my research of my Nimsgern ancestors from accross the pond, ( I have created Nimsgern profiles here on WikiTree) after a cousin from France, Clement Nimsgern contacted me in 2014, he was born and lives today where our ancestors were from, going back to the 17th century, and has access to the Catholic church records for our ancestors. Clement and I share the same 3x great-grandfather who came to America. So, my thoughts are that maybe a One Name Study could lead to possible Nimsgern families in the USA today that may have a connection to my Nimsgern linesthat I am not aware of.   Sandie

Welcome, Sandie!

I have created your category page (changed 'X Name Study' on your freespace page), now all you have to do is wait for Sarah!
You're all set with the badge and the redirect, Sandie!  :)  I have many French ancestors; I hope someday to find a French cousin who has access to local records!  That's fantastic!

Just one more thing, please, Cassandra..

On the Miles and Tiltman Name Studies, do you see where the category is red?  You need to click on it, and in the page that opens, put

[[Category:One Name Studies]]

to create your category page for these two Studies.
Thanks, I have done so now
You're all set, Cassandra!  Welcome! :)

I have created a ONS page for the surname of Addington:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Addington_Name_Study
by Jeremy Addington G2G1 (1.5k points)
edited by Jeremy Addington
Hello Jeremy

I have created your category page and we now await Sarah. :)
Is Sarah the person who can complete the setup for my One Name Study of Addington?  I now see the link on the ONS index page, but I still don't see a link to the Addington ONS on the Addington index page.

Sarah Heiney is the Leader of the One Name Studies Project and therefore has the authority to create a redirect.  You will just have to be patient; Sarah is really good at getting to these, but we all have lives outside WikiTree! (at least, I *think* we dolaugh) In the meantime, I'm sure you have plenty to do to the Addington Name Study (like adding categories to profiles, documenting the meaning of the surname, etc)

Hello Jeremy!  I see someone else set up your redirect; you now have the badge :)  Welcome to the project!
