Categorisation for English Suffragettes

+10 votes

Hi all,

I am in the process of starting a sub-project for the English Suffragettes. This is in conjunction with the Activists and Reformers sub-project under Notables. I have been communicating with J Salsbery, who runs the A&R Project about the categorisation tree for Women's Suffrage.

The current structure looks like this:

Activists and Reformers

   --- Feminists

      --- Women's Suffrage Movements

         --- Suffragists (7 profiles)

         --- Women's Suffrage Organisations (4)

            --- Women's Suffrage in England

               --- WSPU (14 profiles)

         --- Women's Suffrage in England

--- Women's Suffrage Organisations in England

               --- WSPU (as an example)

            --- British Suffragettes

This currently includes a double thread which seems unnecessary. It also includes a geographical inaccuracy with British Suffragettes being under England.

Here is my proposal which has been agreed with J Salsbery, and both the England Project and the Categorisation Project so far:

Activists and Reformers

--- Suffragists (these are different to Suffragettes and not within the scope of my proposal and sub-project right now).

--- Women's Suffrage (I think this deserves to be bumped up one and not come under Feminism as this is a different thing).

--- United Kingdom Women's Suffrage (inc. FSP)

--- United Kingdom, Women's Suffrage Organisations (No need to split these up by country. to include FSP for each one)

         --- England, Suffragettes

         --- Wales, Suffragettes

         --- Scotland, Suffragettes

   --- England, Politics

      --- England, Suffragettes

So then on each individual Suffragette profile, there would be two categories (unless they belonged to more than one organisation):

[[Category: Name of Suffragette Org they belonged to]]

[[Category: England, Suffragettes]]

The England project box would be included, Notables would be on the trusted lists and a "this day in history" category would be added to the high profile Suffragettes, and there would be a Suffragette sticker.

I'll leave this here for your comments for seven days.

Thanks all,

So  how would one categorise  Millicent Fawcett  (suffragist)

as compared with Christabel Pankhurst (suffragette)

(I admit  I find category  hierachies more and more confusing  )
Hi Helen,

I'm only working on the Suffragettes with this sub-project so wouldn't be working on Millicent Fawcett's profile. She would currently be categorised under the main Suffragists category until such time as someone proposed a more detailed category hierarchy for Suffragists.

Christabel Pankhurst would be categorised the way I am proposing.

Susie :-)

I would love to see Edith Garrud, the Suffragette who Judo-flipped cops, connected to the Tree!
