This is a toughie! William Lawing was born about 1725, place unknown. I’ve seen Germany as a place and various dates of birth. I’ve also seen England. Family lore places his death in Tennessee about 1820 (no source). Check out his profile [[lawing-75]] and see if there is anything you might be able to help with. The bio may give some leads.

William’s surname has variously been spelled Lewin, Lewing (this last showed up on some of his Confederate descendants’ records. His son, Andrew, spelled in Lawing grave stone at Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mecklenburg County, NC.

William supposedly served in the French and Indian War, but I have not seen the documentation. His wife, Jean (Killian) Lawing is better documented than he is.

Thanks ahead of time for any assistance!

I might have found maybe a little clue - without being sure that it turns out right. You write in the biography there is a documented source which claims William was "born 1727 in Bayern Lande Rhenish Palatine". My hypothesis is that the guy who documented the death used the "current" name of the region where William was born. There was Rhenish Palatine officially between 1816 and 1837 (have a look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_the_Rhine). This would mean William died after 1816. The wikipedia-article also writes which area was included in Rhenish Palatine. This would narrow the region geographically considerably. It may be only a little hint, but I hope that helps.

Thanks, Jelena. I do not know where the documentation came from (haven’t seen it) for the place of birth. As to place of death, it looks like William moved to Tennessee some time after 1808, the last time William appears in Mecklenburg County records. He would already been very old then, and more than likely he was moving to be near descendants.

I have no siblings or parentage for William. The stories in the bio about William having a sister were copied from someone else’s research that came with no documentation. I kept that info in as a possible lead, but it sure hasn’t panned out that way. Frustrating!

Thanks again.
