The origin of the name is the town of Moffat in Scotland.  In 2017 I found and joined the Clan Moffat Society.  (http://www.clanmoffat.org) Clan Moffat has a chief, Madam Jean Moffat of that Ilk, a motto and a crest.  The Moffat motto is Spero Meliora translated to “I aspire to greater things.”

A picture of the crest may be seen at http://www.clanmoffat.org/images/QuarterMaster/Pin.jpg.

A picture of the chief’s coat of arms and clan history may be seen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Moffat

A picture of the clan tartan may be seen at http://www.clanmoffat.org/images/QuarterMaster/Tartan.jpg.

The modern Clan Moffat tartan is black, silver, and a very small amount of red.  It is based on the Douglas tartan.  Unlike other clans, the Moffat clan has never merged with any other clan so that any person with an accepted version of the name and can be traced back to Scotland is considered a member of the clan and a cousin.  The 20 accepted versions of Moffat are:  Maffat, Maffatt, Maffet, Maffett, Maffit, Maffitt, Moffat, Moffatt, Moffet, Moffett, Moffit, Moffitt, Morfit, Morfitt, Morphat, Morphatt, Morphet, Morphett, Morphit, Morphitt, Muffat, Muffatt, Muffet, Muffett, Muffit, Muffitt
