Sourcerers' Challenge Month of June 2018

Hello, Sourcerers! If the clock has rolled around for you, and we are in the new month it is time to start sourcing! Prior month stats will be posted soon.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please “answer” here (not comment) and let me know if you will be using the tracker or if you will be listing your profiles here in your post. Either one is perfectly fine : )

To participate:

Remember, your sources need to be as full and specific as possible, so others find them useful. That means, if the source is online, you should link to it. If it is a page from a book, the page number should be included so others can easily see where you found the reference.

When you can, it's great to do a bit more while adding sources, like clean up the gedcom leftovers or help the formatting from older profiles. Sources are important, but if you can't find them among all the other stuff, they aren't helping as much as they could.

On to the monthly challenge:

You only need to answer the post once. If you opt to use the Tracker you are good to go.  If you opt to  add your sourced profiles, add a comment to your answer with the required details. If you exceed the character limit add another comment.  Please number your contributions. Obviously, the Tracker is faster and less work for everyone.  If you have a problem with the Tracker let us know by posting a comment to the thread.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced-you cannot create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the profiles already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will help merges happen, too, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you're using helps newer researchers see just what's available out there for us to access. Another great source of unsourced profiles is to check out orphaned profiles.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better.

*If you attempt to add sources to a profile and cannot find any, please add a note under a == Research Notes == section giving where you tried to find records and you can sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and didn't find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start. Do not remove the Unsourced Template and will not count in your tally.

* If the only source is a link to a profile, is a profile or search results page from another genealogy website or the words "Ancestry tree," "Geni.com," "Pedigree Resource Files" from FamilySearch, and the like, the profile is considered unsourced. If you add better sources to the profile include it in your tally.

* If you find a match and can merge a profile into an already sourced profile, that counts, too. You still found a source, plus you eliminated a duplicate. Awesome!

The Monthly Challenge runs from midnight the first day of your month and ends at 11:59 the last day of the month. The Challenge Tracker results page has up the minute stats for those of you using the Challenge Tracker. Ask any questions here in the thread, otherwise, SOURCE!

I am in again, will use the tracker. Last month during  the Data Doctor challenge, came across lots of unsourced without the unsourced template so was glad to know they counted

Very frustrating when you come across a profile you sourced to see that the PM has deleted the source citations link! In favour of the broad 'accessed a BMD' they used.  At least they kept the data
I would like to join in this month if I manage to have time.
I think adding the date accessed and by whom is helpful.

Pat

Hi Guys

For those of you sourcing English Profiles can I ask to to add the following if you only find one or two sources

Category: Profiles With Incomplete Sourcing - England with the usual [[ ]] framing For others please check out the

Enables others to come along and add to what we acheve in the challanges

Janet

I thought this sounded like a great idea but ... the instructions on that category page specifically state that it is only to be added by the Profile Manager. (emphasis mine)

Note: Please do not apply this tag to any profile unless you are a Profile Manager for that profile. The goal of this tag is to let Sourcerers know that they have a Profile Manager's permission to add sources to a profile without checking with them first. If you think that a profile needs more sources, you can ask the Profile Manager if they're willing to add the tag, but don't add it to profiles you don't manage.

Thanks Debi, I forgot about that bit as I have been mainly working on orphans

Janet
I will help again, as I have time!
yay!

:-)
June 2018 new Sourcerers badges have been awarded. Thanks to the Challenge Team and all the Sourcerers for helping keep our WikiTree healthy!

Will be sourcing, and will be using tracker.

(By the way, I didn't get the Sourcerer badge on my profile last month for some reason)

R, thanks for letting me know. I've done a little more checking and figured out what happened. I'll be awarding April 2018 Sourcerers badges sometime today.
All sorted. Thanks to both of you for having alerted me to the missing April badges. All my fault and I'll work hard to make sure it doesn't happen again.
I'm also in that category - altho I don't remember signing up each month - I've been nibbling away at my "unsourced" profiles....

I know I did some in both April and May.

Not that it matters, but people can change the world if

1. Nobody cares who gets the credit.

2. If given enough "trinkets" or awards.
The Sourcerers' badge is a one and done assignment; Roy, yours was assigned in January 2018. For R and Kelley, and all the other new Sourcerers in April, a snafu happened and they hadn't received their badges. It's all about the bling *grin* right? Especially that one, at least for me, because I think the sourcerers' hat is cool
Not that It will keep me from updating unsourced profiles.....

but I didn't realize it was a one time thing - I'll move it up on my page.

I am having trouble updating the challenge on current profiles - it takes me to an error page.

I understood that Sourcerers badges for May would be assgined sometime the week of June 3rd -- it's the 10th now, and I still don't have one.
A Hayes - me too, so you're not alone.  I'm sure they're just behind ;-)
You only get one Sourcerer badge. I got mine in January.

Understood. But I joined for the first time in May, so that is why I'm talking about the 'May badge' -- the one given to people who started working on the challenge last month. Still busy adding sources anyway!

I will do some.

You find some interesting things. Last night I found the woman who married Andrew Carnegie. Haven’t been back to add sources for her parents.. also haven’t been back to take a closer look at some of the census to see if the same servants appear over multiple enumerations.

I will join and use the tracker. Is it just about unsourced porfiles or must the profiles be categorized as such to count in the score?
by Eef van Hout G2G6 Pilot (187k points)
If there is no source and you add one it counts.  I have added to a whole 4000
unsourced GEDCOM that were not marked as unsourced and they were all counted.  There are many old profiles that have not been designated as unsourced that came in on GEDCOMs and no one has personally designated them as such.
