Henry Neal orphaned and no data

+11 votes
Found the below Henry Neal while looking for possible matches of my profiles. This dude’s profile has no data at all, dates, places, parents, children.  What does WT do with these kinds of profiles? Since we can’t delete them, do we just let them float with no possible was to connect them?

Pip, Steve answered your question about what WikiTree does with profiles that are completely empty of data, but then we have the question of what to do with profiles in the Recycle Unknowns category.  When you are creating a new profile, you can always check the Recycle Unknowns to see if there is one with the same LNAB (Last Name At Birth) there.  If there is, you can use it and just edit it to make it the profile you want to add.  This helps by keeping needed merges down, which helps server efficiency.

Your case now is the perfect situation to use that already existing profile instead of creating a new one.

My practice when approaching a profile like Harry's and using Recycle Unknowns is to go to Find>Search, then all the way down the page to "Search For Any Text" and type in the name of the gedcom. Usually, a long list pops up of many profiles attached to that gedcom. I go through it to see if I can find ANY person who may be attached to that name in some way. Often, I find a spouse, parent, etc. When nothing else shows up, I add the Recycle Unknowns category.
Hi Gaile
Thanks so much for elaborating in more detail. G2G is a bit of a headache from a mobile phone.

Much appreciated.
How about this? I have more Neals to add, and Henry is a common name among the Neal’s. Could attach this Henry and then with the data I have make him mine. That would avoid a merge. Will that work?
That's perfect, Pip!  You don't have to wait for a Henry, though ... as long as it's the same LNAB, the WikiTree ID won't change.  It doesn't matter if you change the first name.
Oh, of course! Thanks, Gaile, for the insight. I’ll do just that. (But not tonight. I’m on vacation on the Eastern Cherokee Res and my wife would kill me!)

Hi Pip,

Profiles like this one sometimes have this category used [[Category: Recycle Unknowns]] you can find out more about this maintenance category here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Recycle_Unknowns

I did a search for matches and found a Henry Neal that has no profile manager but has more information than the above profile. Could the two just be merged instead of putting it to Recycle? There are many other Henry Neal.

Yes, they could be merged, Sherry, but it looks like Pip wants to add a profile for another Henry Neal, so using this one would be a better solution.  Every time there is a merge, it adds to the processing overhead to maintain the trail from the WikiTree ID that disappeared to the one that it was merged with, so we try hard to avoid having to do merges anytime we can avoid them.
