If you have Portuguese ancestors then the Portugal Project might be just what you are looking for. Check out the free-space page for details, and if interested in joining please answer this post below. Please don't comment as it becomes difficult to track who we have responded to.

Thanks!

Susie :-)

Yes, I am the great grandson of Joseph (Estevez) Stevens and Mary (Amaral) Stevens. I have only been able to find out their parents, I don't know Portuguese so going further back is difficult.

Welcome Ed. Researching Portuguese records can be difficult, but rewarding!

I am the great great great grandson of Mary Vasconcellos and Domingus DeCastro, who came from Madeira Island during the mid-19th century diaspora to Illinois.

Hi Audrey! I hope that you can join us in showcasing Portuguese profiles.
Hi Mindy, here is my email address

Hi Audrey, can you go to my profile and send me a private message with that email? Thanks!

I would bet the surname is Ribeiro, which is common in portuguese. Good luck researching.

My grandfather's https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tareco-4 parents are from Maderia. The last name was Silva de Tareco and now shortened to Tareco. They settled in Lowell, Ma.
by Jim Tareco G2G6 Mach 3 (36.4k points)
Hi Jim, I see you have ancestors from Arco da Calheta. Large parish, good records :)

Jim - I added the marriage record for João da Silva Tareco Jr. You don't have to join the project to use the resources linked on WikiTree. Send me a message and I can give you the pages for Madeira.

It's unfortunate that they didn't list grandparents in the marriage record.

Yes! All of my mother's great grandparents were born in the Azores or Madeira and were brought to Hawaii as slaves in the 1800's.
by Shanna Davies G2G3 (3.2k points)
Hi Shanna,

We don't have matching dna, but I have ancestors from both the Azores and Madeira as well. We'd love to have you on the team!

My parental grandparent were Joao (John) Silveira Luis (Lewis) of Fayal, Azores, Portugal and Barbara Dawn da Cost from Beira Grande, Braganca, Portugal. Both immigrated in the early 1900's to central California. DNA testing has helped me to unlock the parental side of my tree.

Hi Barb,

I see you weren't logged in when you answered this. Are you a WikiTree member that is interested in joining us? DNA has been an amazing help with finding cousins for all areas, including Portugal. It is exciting to find those connections!

You can PM me if you are interested or have further questions

70% Iberian. Both Portuguese parents. Having difficult time tracing both grandparent lines. Genetically some Italian, Spanish etc. So I need help.
by Christine Assumpcao G2G Crew (320 points)
Hi Christine, are you interested in volunteering so you're not in a Guest status? Joining the project may be just what you need to learn where to locate records.
I would certainly volunteer but I feel I need to learn so much. I am just getting started on the Geneology journey. How does volunteering help one learn how to locate records?

Hello again Christine,

You certainly don't have to volunteer to get help, there are many wonderful collaborators on WikiTree. I can tell you though what I have learned... not only are you privy to others searching the same area (this works, this doesn't right now, why not?), but you are also in direct contact with others that are skilled in locating records. In other words, not only can you learn via working on profiles that are not your own, you can pick up tips and resources that will help you with your own research.

In your case, you are a guest. You don't have full editing privileges. You don't need to choose this project to volunteer for, but if it also helps you in the long run, why not?

I cannot begin to express how helpful fellow WikiTree-ers have been in my own searches. And - new cousins that I never knew I had :)

It has been a wondrous journey!

And btw - bookmark everything lol, or put it into a Notepad or Word document! You may see resources that you don't think you need, and later on discover that they are necessary.

My Portuguese side, which is my paternal grandfather's side is traced back to 1681 from the island of Pico in the Azores.  My maternal grandfather's side is traced back to Sao Miguel, also in the Azores.
by Sharon Simson G2G Crew (990 points)
Hi Sharon,  how exciting that you have traced that line so far back! I have been researching in Saint Michael also. It can be difficult but rewarding. We'd love to have you join the project!

Yes. Please sign me up. My mothers entire family is from the Azore islands. Researching has proven to be very difficult. Thank you.

Hi A,

It looks like you are making good progress with your branches of the tree! I can tell that you find sources important, and have worked on developing your bios. Researching people from the Azores can be difficult, but rewarding! We'd love to have you on the team.

My great-grandfather, [[Parece-7|Antonio Jose Parece]] was born in 1869, in the Azores. I would like to be able to find his parents. Several years ago, I had brief contact with someone who believed we were cousins. I’ll have to find those emails, and re-connect.

My wife's paternal grandfather identified as being from the Azores/Portugal.  In the 1870 US census for New London, CT his paternal grandparents were James Jordan, 38, Western Islands and his wife Louisa Constance Clementine, 31, Western Islands and his maternal grandparents Antoine Foster, 26, Western Islands, his wife Mariana Enos, 30, Western Islands.  Family lore is the the surname Jordan was 'taken' by James to be more american.  That his oldest son Joseph Ventura Jordan, carried the family surname Ventura.

Was the 1870 census unique in using the 'Western Islands' as a birthplace?  Did it refer to the Azores in general or a more specific group of island like today.  The 1880 census uses Portugal.  There appears to be a close knit community in New London, Ct in the late 1800's.

Would like to help with the New London, CT area families.
by Charles Barrett G2G3 (3.7k points)
Hi Charles,

Most likely that census taker wasn't familiar with the Azores islands, and used that as a general term. I saw one census in Hawaii where everyone was either 'Azores' or 'Madeira.' The next one just said 'Portugal' for them all.

Welcome to the Portugal Project! I've sent you a PM.

Mindy

Yes, I have a lot of Portuguese ancestry.   Most of my mother’s family side comes from Northern Portugal ( Porto, Braga, the Alto D’Ouro e Minho and Tras-os-Montes) and from The Azores ( Sao Miguel and Fayal ) and lastly from Funchal in the Madeira Islands
by Richard Prendes G2G1 (1.1k points)
Hi Richard,

I have sent you a pm with details about the project. We would love to have you join us!

Mindy
I would love to help!  I have been working on my maternal grandfather’s branch of my tree for over 10 years now and I was able to trace back his maternal line all the way back to the Islamic conquest of Iberia.

Rich

Wow, Impressive!! Welcome to the project smileysmiley
