If you have Portuguese ancestors then the Portugal Project might be just what you are looking for. Check out the free-space page for details, and if interested in joining please answer this post below. Please don't comment as it becomes difficult to track who we have responded to.

Thanks!

Susie :-)

Hello everyone! I was born in Portugal to a portuguese mother and a german father. I research my portuguese ancestors as well as my wife's.

I'll be happy to join.

I sure do. All four of my paternal great-grandparents left Madeira in 1884 on the Bordeaux for Hawaii to work the sugar plantations - Manuel de Franca Campainha and his wife, Antonia de Franca from Boaventura, and Jose da Silva da Ribeira with his wife Rosa Joaquina from Madalena do Mar. This project looks fantastic. Hopefully I can get up to speed with WikiTree fast enough to contribute! I have done a lot of research with church docs from a few different parishes in Madeira and can do at least decent translations for baptismal, marriage, and death records.

We're happy to have you in the project Jim! I think you do quite well with your translations smiley

Yes I am interested as I have a Portuguese sailor ancestor - Emanuel Betancor who arrived in Melbourne, Australia around 1850, married and had a family in South Australia and Victoria. Later his widow, Agnes McGill married Francesco Bettencurt, also a Portuguese sailor.

I don't know when they arrived in Australia or what part/s of Portugal were their homes.

I've sent you a pm Megan. We'd love to have you join the project! Sometimes finding out where our ancestors came from in Portugal is the hardest part of the research. Once you figure that out, those branches grow quickly!
