Challenge of the week: Clean up as many location names as possible [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This week's challenge focuses on location fields.

Aleš has prepared a report of profiles from around the tree that have potential errors in their locations. These are usually simple typos that are easy to fix. But a thinking genealogist needs to give them a quick "reality check" and consider the intent of the original member and the sources before making any changes. Will you try some?

After making a change, click the "challenge tracker" button and then the edit the status. This will record a point. The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

So far everything I check has been corrected. How can I find profiles that have not been done? Thanks!
I'm not sure why I keep finding myself on profiles which are supposedly worked on by BOND-4066 but still visible.
They'll still show as errors until Monday, when they'll disappear if corrected.
That is also the whole reason for the spreadsheet if BOND-4066 marked off what he worked on, then you would know to chose something else.
I have marked on the spreadsheet. I have found that many profiles show up in multiple lists.
1. I didn't know that Bond was Jeffries. 2. I didn't know he was a she. and 3. Since you DID mark it on the sheet, then they know what to avoid if they look on the sheet. Except as I say the ones where you clean the death locations and fix the birth locations while you are on the same profile.
I'm sorry, I didn't realise that any corrected profiles didn't disappear for a week
All is forgiven and understood. I was trying to tend the forrest correctly by fixing anything that I saw that needed some love. David I was not really aware of the week update thingy either.
Hey, I found the right one. We really need to date these things. Someone got 2 of the wrong month and I just spent 15 minutes answering something they might not see so I had to private message it to them also.

The sheet is turning magenta. LOL
Working on it...whooooo hooooo
I finally found the sheet and have been coloring my sections turquoise. Are we supposed to make them pink when we are done?

If you are only doing only Tennessee, please don't mark the cell, write it down below.

Right now you have claimed 12,425 errors that you are going to do. That is 8 cells colored in, doing every suggestion. If it is colored, those that use the sheet will skip it because you are doing all of it.
I am not working from a sheet.... is that bad. Working from this.. http://www.softdata.si/wt/Err_20180603/Challenge_48_Location/608_60_1.htm
I am not doing Tennessee I am doing what I colored in Steven.
Terry, the sheet is LITERALLY the list you used to get to that section with the added ability of being able to mark off or note what you are working on.

You are doing 608 misspelled country in birth location 1800-1899. That is small enough that you would literally just color the 1 cell to let everyone else know you are working on it. That way 5 people don't try to do the same error and keep finding a bunch of them done constantly.

Could someone more experience then me look at this profile. weird info showing in marriage and death location, but when you go to edit page, there is nothing there to delete ??

ok, someone put sources in the fields. Then it looks like you deleted it and left them blank. I put the info FROM the sources in the fields.

You can double-check under the change tab. Fixed.
Yes, I think the text/symbol was white and you could not see it in edit mode.  After lunch, I decided to try to highlight the whole field and delete, and it worked.  Thanks for taking the time to look at it!.
That's very possible. I've had to hi-lite nothing and delete it before because it thinks it is code instead of text. I checked the sources though and updated it with the right info instead of blank. You gotta love the little things that drive you crazy.

Count me in, too. I'll focus on Pennsylvania errors.

error lists by State/Province/Country link added to upper left corner of weekly challenge sheet. You still need to determine which errors are part of the weekly challenge from those lists on your own though.
Thanks, Steve. I'm good to go.

I am going to try this. I make enough typo's myself that others have corrected might as well "give back" so to speak.

I'll try a few. I get frustrated when I run into large blocks already fixed and I have to go hunt for new ones.
by Katrina Whitaker G2G6 Mach 4 (40.4k points)
That is exactly why I made the spreadsheet. If everyone used it, THAT wouldn't happen except for random crossovers like fixing a birth location while doing death locations.
