I have imported the GED from Ancestry.com : how do I get it to autopopulate the Wikitree site or do I need to recreate each entry again?

You might want to take a look a this page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:GEDCOM_File_Usage_Primer

It is a compilation page of various help and hint pages on WikiTree for getting started on using gedcom files to transfers your family tree(s) to WIkiTree.

There is NO autopopulation on Wikitree - you have to manually compare each and every person on your tree to ensure there are no duplicates.

This is one major reason why I chose not to use a Gedcom and I have manually added all my relatives and ancestors to the global tree, since I signed up. That was 18 months ago and I have no regrets for making that decision.

  1. GEDCOMs are not imported, i.e. family trees are not automatically added to WikiTree. After you upload our "GEDCOMpare" tool enables you to conveniently:
  2. Compare your tree with our shared tree. We show you the most likely matches. This can be used by itself — a handy way to see if anyone in your family is already on WikiTree.
  3. Add & edit profiles on our shared tree using your GEDCOM. You add people one at a time after confirming or rejecting suggested matches.
  4. Gedcom Help pages

2018 GEDCOMpare Process

I have to say after looking at the process, it hardly seems worth it.  It’s very buggy and i realized that there is no way to tell it i don’t want to import siblings etc, i just want to import my main line.  But of course, i don’t want to go back and completely redo my Ancestry tree either.  Seems like a time waster trying to import OR trying to do manually.  Doing it manually, means checking back and forth constantly in Ancestry.  Terribly disappointing, unless there is something I’m missing.
