name sorting

In the St. Louis Category Menge goes before Meng, Is this some kind of sorting fluke? I've noticed weird sorting other places in categories too. Like Weisfield before Weis. Which is just an example Evansville, Indiana has several places like that. Its not a problem in short sections but if Smith goes before Smithe in almost any city people are going to assume no Smithes were ever there.

Are you referring to sorting happening on the WikiTree site, or in document lists at some other site?

One thing I've noted on many older lists of names that are hand-written is that prior to this computer and information age, many people would put all the people together whose last names started with the same letter, resulting in a long list of mostly out-of-sequence names.  I've seen this on birth and marriage record lists for a variety of towns.
On this site in categories.
