How to add/link a source to a piece of data

Still in my first week here at WT, I don't understand how to enter sources, except in the text window near the bottom of the exit page.

E.G., I enter my grandfather's birth date. I have a source for that and want to link it to that date. When I put the <ref>Source</ref> in after the birth date I get an error message, something about not being able to interpret that as a date.

So, can you cite a source for each piece of data? If so, how?

TIA

The in line sources "<ref>...</ref>" only go in the Biography section and appear like footnotes. The don't go in the date/location fields. The biography should have  more of a narrative on the person's life.

Thanks, Doug. So to enter a source for a piece of data requires me to work that data into the Biography?
Well, yes. All of the data that we are asked to enter in the profile data section (birth date, birth location, marriage date and location, various names, etc.) is part of the person's life story, so it shouldn't be difficult to "work it into" the biography.

I like to think of the profile data section as an index to the profile, while the text section (Biography and Sources) is the main profile.
Thanks, Ellen. Looks like entering biographies for everyone is the way to go to show sources for data.

This video on inline referencing by Julie Ricketts is useful when you are learning how to source.
