Thanks so very much for sharing this photo, Jane!  I clicked through the photo to see if there was a bit more information, and was delighted to see these notes: "This photo was recently found in the possession of my 86 year old uncle. It includes my grandfather Edward ROBERTS (second row from front, fifth from right). I am unsure what year it was taken but it seems likely it was towards the end of the war as he looks much older than when he joined in 1914. If anyone can help me identify the place the photo was taken it would be much appreciated. My aunt tells me her father used to point to the man in the centre of the photograph at the back (actually second from left) back row and say he was a German. Sadly some of the photo is missing."

I was also glad to read a bit about Clarence Duckworth, the one who is in this 2nd Regiment, 2nd Battalion.  What I get from this family photo that has so much power is the immediacy of the moment--of the sense of time and place of what World War I must have been like for Clarence Duckworth, who'd just enlisted in 1914, right at the start of WWI.  I can't fully imagine what that must have been like.

When I zoom in for full resolution of this photo (well worth taking a moment to do)--I see these Australian infantry forces all have interestingly tilted Aussie-style hats--perfect protection from the elements.  I also see a huge variety of emotions and expressions on the faces of these young men.  I can't help but wondering how they've changed from their experiences in this unit.
