Not sure where to post this...

I stumbled across a site that list information on all the towns in Maine:

history.rays-place.com/me/index.htm

It also includes a great deal of information on Bedford New Hampshire.

Thank you Taylor! Bedford is less than a mile from me!

Nice find, Taylor!

More than just history of towns, that site also provides some history of counties in Maine. Many of the original counties of Maine were divided into smaller counties as time passed.

That can be very useful information, for instance, when researching deeds and land transfers. Many early deeds are indexed in the familysearch catalog by the county in which they were registered at the time the property was transferred.

I like using this.

http://publications.newberry.org/ahcbp/index.html

Click a state, then use interactive map. It shows State and county boundaries each time they change by year.

Bruce,

That's great that you were able to find this kind of information here.

I was looking for information to include in some of my Maine profiles.

Taylor

I have found quite a lot of information through the family search catalog which is not indexed online or otherwise available. It takes a while to figure out the deed and probate indices microfilms, and search through the deed and probate books.

I have several "success" stories from deed research: confirmed that a Veazie bought land in a place I hadn't expected; found a deed which was cosigned by my ancestor's second wife, that marriage suspected but not confirmed, etc.

As an example of the things you look through, as an example of one county:

Bruce,

I am so happy that you are finding useful information from the links I have posted.  I realize when I post links that some people may already be aware of them, but that most people won't be.

It is exciting to hear that you found information and even explained what type of information you found.

Thanks so much.

Thank you, Taylor.

Here is a link to the original source your site is using. (The Gazetteer of the State of Maine by Varney is also linked on the Maine Project page).
