Joshua Adams, late 1700s, Patrick County, Virginia

Question

My Grandfather purchased a 264 acre farm in 1939 in Patrick County, Virginia from a J T Garst .  From there I have traced back deeds thru a number of Garst Family members and in 1899 to J C Adams and back thru many Adam family members to 1793 showing a Joshua Adams as owner then.  It is located on County Line Road on one side and Grassy Creek (north Mayo) on the other. Oral history says it was a tobacco plantation, there was a damn and grist mill located as part of the property, a flowing sulfur spring that was bottled and sold, multiple slaves were present all indicating a prosperous venture.  Stuart, Virginia History Museum shows a Joshua Adams as a Primitive Baptist Preacher also.  There were some ties to other close by Tobacco Plantations, R J Reynolds and Abram Penn, as Joshua presided over both weddings and funerals there. I am not kin to the Adams but would like to know more about Joshua Adams.  The farm is now being sold and I wanted to be able to share any colorful history surrounding the years Mr. Adams lived and worked there .

Joshua Adams lived on a farm in Patrick Springs VA at the head waters of the Mayo River. Was told by the family that now own his farm. That he even had running water. The old house is gone but if you stand at the cemetery you can look over and see where the house once stood on a little knoll.

Back in early June 2018 I posted information I thought was correct on old ownership of land in Patrick County, Va. It was my first attempt at looking thru deed records at Patrick Co. Court House (very complicated for a first timer).  I made a mistake on whom J T Garst obtained a certain farm from in the Mayo River community in 1897.  It was not from a J C Adams as I had thought , it was from a court house sale from a farm belonging to Peter J Frans, and on back to a Joseph and Matilda Frans, then back to Matilda's father Benjamin Spencer.  I'm still researching to see where it went to before Benjamin.   I am sorry for the mistake and putting Joshua Adams as who I thought owned the farm.  Joshua did live close to the farm I'm tracing and led a very interesting life back in the early 1800's but he lived on the other side of Grassy Branch (aka Grassy Creek, aka Upper North Mayo).  I'm still looking for any history early history if anyone knows anything.  Wills Clark, Bassett, Virginia
