CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Ambassadors

WikiTree has pledged to stay 100% free forever, so we need to keep costs low. Since we don't have a big ad budget, our mission depends on word of mouth. We grow when our members tell other genealogists, their family, and friends what we do.

Ambassadors are awesome volunteers who are:

  • ·   Presenters who teach about WikiTree to their local groups and societies,
  • ·   Bloggers in the genealogy community, and
  • ·   Active on various social media channels such as Facebook or Twitter.
  • Ambassadors are dedicated to helping share the WIKITREE_LOVE.

Tips:

  1.  Because there are now unlisted profiles it is harder to query for someone who might be dead, but no proof has been found.  You may find it easier to collaborate with others researching the surname by jointing a One Name Study.  For information go to  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studie
  2. Sometimes a surname is so large you just want to narrow things down to a specific location.  This is where a One Place Study can be of value.  For information on joining or starting a One Place Study go to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Place_Studies
  3. The only thing constant in life is change and we have to learn to adapt.  Change is often hard and requires us to stop and think about how the change is going to affect how we do things.  The best thing we can do is not complain about it, but rather join with others to look for solutions.  Sometimes we can't get back to where we started, but we can often find ways to get close to what we had.  Don't panic, collaborate!

Hail!

Good to see Laura back in the game this week. She's off bringing adoptees close together with their birth families. That is honestly really cool. Keep up the good work! You rock!

My tip this week is simply this. If you found something you've discovered that's really shocking for your family, ease them into the news. Don't drop a train on 'em.  Just let them know once you've gathered all the evidence.

No story with this one as I kinda don't want to talk about it in open. Hope y'all understand! Enjoy the chat!
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (763k points)
That sounds kind of ominous.  Hope all is well!  Happy Friday!
Yeah. Just not really into it this week. Thanks.
I agree with Crispin on this chat Chris

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
I agree Chris -- it is great what Laura is doing!

And I agree about the family news Chris. Skeletons fall out of the tree occasionally. The news is best broken gently. Hope your weekend is going well!
Aye and they don't play guitar in a mariachi band. (Watching Coco on Netflix.)

Weekend is going okay. Working on comic. Later I'll be adding more people to the main tree.
They should lol - just to entertain us after they've startled us!
LOL! Sure! =D

Guess what Today is....

NATIONAL UPSY DAISY DAY

Each year on June 8, National Upsy Daisy Day is set aside to encourage you to face the day positively and to get up ‘gloriously, gratefully and gleefully’ each morning.

Every day is a gift and if we remember that as we rise each morning, it will help us carry a good attitude throughout the day, whatever the day may bring us.  Life is full of challenges and bumps in the road, and it is our attitude that helps us over the bumps and through the challenges to move onward with a smile.

Give it a try.  Be grateful and thankful for what you do have such as a bed to sleep in, food to eat, friends and family. Try a smile and see how it feels.  It may surprise you that it feels good on the inside also and how other people will smile back.  You may just brighten up their day!   Upsy Daisy!

HOW TO OBSERVE

Celebrating Upsy Daisy Day starts when you first wake up, rather than grumbling about waking up, take a chance to be cheerful and bright. Be grateful you awoke warm and safe and then head off to think about what you’ll have for breakfast. A warm cup of coffee, the rain falling outside your window or a bright sunny morning, there’s a lot to be grateful for! Upsy Daisy Day reminds you to pop up and face the day with your eyes raised to the skies like a daisy greeting the sun! Upsy Daisy!

HISTORY

National Upsy Daisy Day was created by Stephanie West Allen in 2003.  Her desire in creating National Upsy Daisy Day was to make humor, laughter and a positive attitude part of the Upsy Daisy Day way.

So on Upsy Daisy Day, just for one day, assume that everything is going to go your way. This doesn’t mean you won’t have your bumps, it just means that when they happen you’ll shrug them off and take a moment to appreciate how little those little setbacks really matter. A bright attitude makes hard tasks easier, it makes things that were once difficult and seemingly impossible become a breeze to manage. It really is all on how you treat the day, and treating it as a glorious, amazing gift rather than a burden you have to make it through is a great start.

It is the weekend already? It is so hard to wrap my head around the weekend starting friday morning. Well, I'm finally busy doing some work repairing trailors in the trailor park so they can be rented out. I'm about ready to break out the caulking gun and the paint brushes to finish some areas up.

After so long with no work, it is great to be able to start actually doing something constructive. Of course the landlord wants it as cheap as possible but I don't want it to just be cosmetic fixes with hidden problems. Such a balancing act.
by Steven Tibbetts G2G6 Pilot (409k points)
Steven based on your work on WikiTree I am sure you are going to deliver a quality project even if you have less than great supplies to work with.
Good luck, sounds like a fun project!
I agree with everyone on this chat Steven.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
I'm sure it will turn out looking great Steven, with you working on it :)
I am with Mindy on this - you will go above and beyond the call of duty here Steven I bet
Just as an update, after 35 hours of work the trailor is habitable. There are a few minor things to do and the roof needs to be re-sealed but that can be done AFTER someone moves in.

Oddly enough, right after I actually started doing some work my G/F who is permanently disabled is now told she needs to find a job and her disability is ending. She can't sit, stand, or lay down for long periods and she has a bad case of PTSD. On top of that, there is no reliable transportation. So where the heck is she going to work? And when did the meaning of "permanently" change?
How old is she because I thought the people who are disabled and between 50 and 60 they do not have to find a job and her disability shouldn't end if she was declared permanently disabled. You need to look into to why her disability is ending and why she has to find a job. Where does she live Steven?
37. They reviewed it and said she has improved which isn't true. and Maine. My question is why did they review a "permanently disabled" person. Her disease may stabilize but it never gets better.
I am so sorry to hear this news Steven - sounds like BS to me! I would chase that problem back to where it originated if possible call and call and call, I do not know - going through a thing here - took time off to go see the doc because I could not get my medicine from the pharmacy - so she re prescribed it - but after driving to the pharmacy Thursday I find out that do to medicare insurance changes it is no longer covered so I called the clinic and still have not heard back as to an alternative - and this affects my ability to work - I hope you can get the disability reinstated

I am sort of back to normal after two weeks of break neck speed working on closing a company before large yearly bills came due.  As you noticed, my tips today deal with the concept of change.  Closing our spice company is a big change for me.  It is sad in many ways but it also opens up new possibilities for me.  This decision was not made easily or lightly, but it was based on health issues both my business partner and her family and my family have been dealing with for a while.  It became obvious we could not continue in the way that made sense for our clients or for ourselves.

One of the things this does is opens me up to have more time to help in other ways.  So I am going to be off the chat most of tomorrow as I help one of the adoptees as part of the Adoption Angels Project  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Adoption_Angels

This person is travelling to the state I live in and we are meeting to do some on the ground in the location research.  So you will be in good hands as Dorothy, Chris, Charlotte, Mindy, and Robynne all check in from time to time on Saturday.  Each has hosted a chat and has our nifty guest host sticker!

So if you are looking for something to do, consider volunteering to be an Adoption Angel.  We do have mentors who will help you learn how to help adoptees with their quests.  We want to help as many adoptees as we can and there is a waiting list so we could really use some more Angels.  You get a great badge and can earn your wings by helping an adoptee get answers they are seeking.

And consider becoming a guest host of the Weekend Chat.  It is a great way to let your personal flair show, have some fun, and interact with a wide group of people on WikiTree.  Besides, you get a choice of 2 nifty stickers for your profile!
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (829k points)
Things really have gone Upsy Daisy for you. It must have been difficult closing the business. Helping adoptees sounds as if it is very rewarding.
That is great! Looking forward to hearing all about your adventure next week if you can share.  Best of luck!

LOL!! " So you will be in good hands as David, Dorothy, Chris, Charlotte, Mindy, and Robynne all check in from time to time on Saturday."

I feel left out! I also will be checking in on the Chat over the weekend. :-)

image

Good, strong hands commanding the mighty whip of encouragement. (TM) ;-)
David I thought you said you were out on Saturday!  So sorry!  I was thinking you had something happening on Saturday.   Maybe that was last week...   I swear I need a keeper!   Did not mean t leave you out, I meant to give you the day off!!!!
Kay and Crispin, yes it is a really neat thing to help people connect with more family.  For the medical knowledge alone it is worthwhile.  They say you get that but having worked on a number of these I can tell you it is very sparse and not like having someone you can talk to about things that affect you physically.

Most of the adoptees really love their adoptive families but still want to know things that can only come from the bio families.   There is enough love to go around!

Anyway, I highly recommend this project to anyone who likes to make a difference in someone's life in a very special way.
Laura I knw what you mean and in my relatives I have relatives adopted. I agree with everyone on this chat Laura and I agree with you Laura too.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

Greetings, TreeFolk!

Thanks for hosting, Laura!

This week I loaded up a few of my grandfather's siblings.  Then went browsing for low-hanging fruit in the Unsourced grove.  I ran across some Tweeds and immediately thought of Boss Tweed (Tweed-1).  Sure enough, they were his children.  So I found some sources for each, and added two children previously left behind.  I even discovered three Tweed daughters at their private school in 1860.

Otherwise, we're enjoying the yin and yang of warm dry spring weather in NM.  It's spectacular weather, but it's warm and dry.  Big fires here and there.  20-30% chance of thunderstorms this weekend.  That's terrific if it actually rains, but spring thunderstorms here sometimes produce lightning with no rain reaching the ground.  White knuckle time until the monsoon arrives.

Also, I'm reading a Lee Child novel.  It's affecting my writing style.

Cheers,

Herb
by Living Tardy G2G6 Pilot (765k points)
Herb I love Preston and Child.  Agent Pengergast is one of my favorite series!  I'm reading White Fire at the moment.  I think there are about 20 of them now...
Different Child, Laura.  How ironic is that in this context?  :)
Hi Herb,  Lee Child is actually Lincoln Child the author and my bleary eyes read it wrong from across the room!  Lincoln Child the author also writes as a duo with Douglas Preston and they are the authors I like for the Agent Pendergast character series...   Sigh... I really need to have my eyes checked soon...
Laura, Lee and Lincoln are two different, unrelated people.  Unfortunately, if they have profiles they are Unlisted.  :(
Yes I know that, my post was not very clear!  I was running out the door as I got a phone call as I was typing it, that my aunt had fallen.  She is ok and I can now type more coherently!

I thought it said Lee Child because I could see the L and I knew Preston and Child wrote the stories, so my eyes saw Lee instead of Lincoln.   Duh!
It did say Lee!  Glad your aunt is OK, Laura.  Time for an adult beverage?
Sadly I developed an allergy or sensitivity to alcohol particularly beer and wine.  So an adult beverage for me is something like iced tea or fruit juice.
Maybe some nice calming caffeine-free herbal tea?
I like Black Cherry, Chrysanthamum, Pomegranate Green Tea, the Red Zingers, all of which are herbal.

I also like Earl Grey, Formosa Oolong,Constant Comment and Lapsang Souchong

My favorite drink is a mixture of OJ and Cranberry Juice about 50/50.
Again I agree with everyone on this chat also Herbert too.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Stay safe if that lightening starts hitting Herbert! I hope you continue to see beautiful weather :)

Hi, I'm pretty new to WikiTree. Been here a few months, but at first I was really just searching for information to flesh out my FamilySearch family tree (I've been pretty active over there for a year now).

Recently I've become more serious about using WikiTree. I like that profile management and trusted lists give you some degree of oversight over the work you've done, and I really like the ability to collaborate with others on our branches of the global tree.

This week I've worked on getting at least one source on all my profiles. Trying to work on my suggestion list now too. Trying to shore up my current profiles a bit before I add more of them.
by Thomas Fuller G2G6 Mach 9 (93.6k points)

Just realized. I've been here almost a year and not once have I asked for a mentor. I just annoyed asked you talented people for help. =) And am very grateful.

Welcome, Thomas!  Sounds like you are here for all the right reasons.

Hey Chris - I never asked for a mentor, either, but I might have had one anyway.  A couple of people seemed to be stalking me early on, kind of watching over.  Just saying.

Hi Chris, you would be surprised as to how many of us at WikiTree are Mentors. We all try to help each other even those that are not officially a member of the Mentors Project.

Well, in the beginning Susan Anderson was a big, huge help. And I guess later it was Laura and a few others. To name them all would take a while.
I'm just a tipster and yes I am back again!   False alarm.  My aunt was a little bruised but she did not hit the ground hard, it seems she was holding onto a gripper but lost her grip!  Never a dull moment!
Yep......Looks like it. Glad she is okay.
I agree with everyone on this chat Thomas. Welcome to WikiTree and the WkiTree weekend chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Glad to see you here Thomas. WikiTree is absolutely the best for collaboration!

Laura -- I'm glad your aunt is ok!

Chris - I think David is right. You are friendly and talk to many people. Some of those were mentors ;)
Yeah. You were helpful when your name was just M Silva. =)

Looking at the list and I see we got some new mentors and some are people who helped me in the past. Cool. Oh. My boss in Italian Roots is a mentor?! That would explain a lot.....
Yes there are a variety of people who are volunteers on WikiTree who watch over our tree in various ways.  Sometimes I am sure people do feel stalked like Herb joked.  Or they feel happy that someone read something they wrote and stopped to answer them even if it was a quick note.

WikiTree is about helping and collaborating and sometimes that can fly in the face of someone who likes to do things more on their own.

So I made up some rules for myself to help me deal with the various thins we can run into on a large public forum like WikiTree

1. Be nice as it says in the Honor Code.  That means don't slam people even if you are in the right to do it ... like when someone posts something snarky directed at you instead of debating a topic.  Personal attacks are not the order of the day.

2.  Debate an issue.  But don't get emotionally caught up in it.  People have many different opinions and disagreements will happen.  Be respectful and you may just come to a point where you agree to disagree

3.  We all communicate with different styles and sometimes a person's style of writing or expressing frustration can rub you the wrong way... remember electronic communication lacks facial expression or voice inflection.  Read the same line twice with different tone and you get a different idea...  Opt to go to a helpful tone first.

4.  If you think someone has misunderstood what you have said, restate it or just drop it... depends on how strongly you  feel about it.

5.  We can all put our foot in our mouth and some of us can get both feet in...  so let's just give everyone a break and take a deep breath before responding.

6.  Never give a down vote because they mean absolutely nothing to the person getting one.  They don't know what they said that got downvoted unless they only posted one thing in all of G2G.  They have no idea who gave it.  They don't even know they got one unless they checked their G2G profile.  Talk about something totally useless.  So ignore them.

7.  So you got some down votes and someone wants to take an anonymous pot shot... ignore it and remember that "if you have never been laughed at or picked on as such it doesn't mean your perfect it just means you have not communicated as much."

Thank you to our Greeters, Mentors, Integrators, and Rangers who watch over us for the right reasons.  And thanks to all of those who participate, collaborate, and volunteer through all the marvelous projects we have on WikiTree.

I have been trying to slow down on WikiTree for some time now. I have been, and continue to, reducing my watchlist to give me some breathing room while keeping those profiles of relative's and others who are important to me on the list. I have been setting the privacy levels to be more Open if not totally Open as well. My problem is that most every profile I look at I am related to. I have also taken some time to work on a program to help reduce my weight, and I am happy to say that it is working slowly. I may also be spending more time helping the radio club I belong to in a more active way. Yes I know I spend a lot of time with that already but there is the possibility that by years end I may be an officer of the club, but that is a very long story. I have edited every profile on my watchlist since Sep 22, 2017 so I have been taking a little more time with some of the profiles I work on now. There is always more to do with them but a lot of the profiles on my watchlist are still unsourced and do not even have that template on them so I try to find at least one source for those before I move on. Yes I add the template if I can not find a source but that is very rare.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Great tactic Dale!  And congrats on the radio club - hope that works out well for you.
I adopted a host of profiles recently and am slowly working through their suggestions list.  I am used to 0 not numbers over 100.... sigh...  most are taking me between 1 and 2 hours to source and fix.   I found one family that is in WikiTree 3 times..with different spellings of the last name.  So I am slowly merging them and getting that down to one sourced family.
Laura, that is what happened to me, times 20 on the adoptions. Again my problem is I am related to too many already on WikiTree.
My suggestion list is down to 2, 1 is for an unconnected Notable and the other is an unsourced FAG date difference that does not even have a photo.
I have some I can lend you!  Just kidding!   Good for you!
I am sure that when the next report comes out there will be more. all I do is add sources and remove myself from trusted lists but the suggestions increase every week. I try to fix the ones on the list but it seems like a never ending task.
The changes due to GDPR created some new ones and are triggering some old ones that I think are being fixed.  It seems to me something happened with FindAGrave when they hid some data for living people attached to the deceased person on some profiles.  But I think it was a small blip that has been fixed now.. Steven Tibbits might know more he is more up on that than I am right now.
I agree with everyone on this chat, too Dale especially.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

Happy Weekend everyone!  I spent my Wiki time this week working on my grandfather's bunch, the Richardsons.  I got a copy of "the Richardson book" at the most recent family reunion - and although we all know about those "folk histories of the family" and how inaccurate they can be - it is a good place to START! To be honest I think this kind of straight "data entry" can be a bit dull - but in a soothing way I guess!  Kind of like knitting!

I also unplugged one dead end this week.  A cousin who went to Tennessee  early on - it turns out that "family history" had his mother's maiden name completely wrong. I was wondering why she just sort of came out of nowhere - well - she has been tracked down and put in her right place - and just goes to show you - don't believe everything your family tells you!  Or at least, verify it!

I am also COMPLETELY caught up on photo scanning and upload.  All pics from not one but TWO cousins have been input - probably around 75 to 100?  This is good news because I am going back soon to the home town and I have a line on another source of pics. SO I needed to get the "backlog" cleared out and now I have.
by Crispin Reedy G2G6 Mach 4 (46.0k points)
I am recycling duplicate photos by letting my granddaughter who is 5 going on 30 sort them, put them into an album and create something special for the special people in our shared life.  She is having a ball and loves the stories those photos are jogging in my brain.  Her Mom is an avid scrapbooker, of course my son just rolls his eyes at all of us....
I know what you mean about the photo scanning.  My mother in law passed away about a month ago (she was 94 and in fairly good health until a few months before she passed) and my husband inherited ALL of the family photos. When we returned home I started scanning an uploading them but there are so many I'm not sure I'll ever finish. My father in law loved photography and his favorite subject was Mom. I sorted most of them and there were 132 of just her. The think I mostly wonder about is what to do with all the people we don't know. Since Mom passed I can no longer ask her who these people are. I'd love to be able to post some of these somewhere so they can be identified. Wouldn't these be considered orphan photos?
You could have a family reunion and see who can identify people.

There are some sites that do that.  You could also create a free space page here on WikiTree and upload the ones you need identified then invite family to review them.
Roseanne, Welcome to the Chat!  Glad to see you posting!
Thanks Laura!

I am putting all of the photos up on my Google photos site and have made an album that the family has access to. So far no one knows, which isn't surprising since most of the older generation have already passed on. I think the free space here is a wonderful idea and I'll see what I can do to get it going
Yes Roseanne welcome to the WikiTree Weekend chat. I also agree with you and Crispin and everyone else on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Welcome again to the chat Crispin. My MIL has Richardsons. Prolific multipliers that they were...she still sighs when she has to work on those branches. Hers went MD to VA to KY.

Congrats on getting those photos scanned! What a treasure to preserve...
Welcome to the chat Rosanne. The free space is a great idea. You can also look for a Facebook page on the town they lived in. I see those for my area and people post pictures looking to identify unknowns.

Welcome to the weekend everyone. We've been having beautiful weather.

Thanks for hosting Laura.

So WikiTree has taken me off on a couple of genealogy tangents. Thanks to Laura's comment on my post last week, I decided to create a profile for my husband's great grandfather Osson Perry Knight. He was pretty interesting. He volunteered to fight in the Civil War at age 41 and was wounded at the second Battle of Bull Run and at Gettysburg, when he was captured. After spending time as a POW, he was released, rejoined, and was captured again. He returned to Virginia after the war where, at age 51, he married 18 year old Emma Jeter and fathered 9 children. Research on his parents and siblings should be lots of fun, and lots of work. Osson had 10 siblings, 8 half siblings, and 6 step-siblings. There is a 300 page privately published book from a 2001 family reunion that is a start. Neither Osson nor Emma are connected to the larger tree ...yet...

The other tangent started from the 52 Ancestor Weekly challenge of "chapel". My great great grandmother is a brick wall; all that I know about her ancestors/family are that she and her brother the Rev Nathaniel Salisbury were early members of a church formed about 1830. So I created a profile for Nathaniel. I learned that his name may have be Salsbury (about a 50-50 split on the spelling) and that there were no churches in the area when he converted to Methodism about 1816. He was a circuit preacher for 11 years (which makes genealogy just so much fun), and eventually became the presiding elder for the Methodist Episcopal Church in northern New York. So all that work and still no clues on his parents...and he is not yet connected to the larger tree.

by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (597k points)
Oh Kay, so glad we are keeping you busy!   I have fun researching other's families when I get tired of mine which tend to be very basic and boring people compared some of the characters out there on WikiTree.  I am weeks behind on the 52 week project and plan to get caught up by the end of June!  First I need to clear up still over 100 suggestions on these orphaned profiles...
I know what you mean Laura I am a lot of weeks behind on the 52 weeks project. I also agree with Kay too.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

I hope that you are able to break that brick wall down Kay! You're more than welcome to use my Brick Wall photo if you'd like. I have a list of peeps with it.

Just found out I may be MIA the last weekend of June. My daughter has a serious medical condition and is only allowed to drive for less than an hour at a time. She wants to come up for her cousins wedding but she would have to drive for over 8 hours to do that, she is also restricted from flying. I volunteered to go pick her and her daughter up and take them home after the wedding so I will be driving, with a little help, for over 2000 miles that weekend. I will be lucky if I check my email then.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Safe travels Dale.  Your family comes first!
Could she not get a train or a bus - like say Greyhounds? If I were restricted from flying and driving, then I would take the train.
I agree with everyone on this chat Dale especially you.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Robynne, She could but it would cost a lot more money and a lot more time. She is bringing her daughter who is 13 and can not help with the driving and the bus or train tickets for 1 person cost more than the money cost of driving. she would have to extend her trip by 2 days to use the bus due to schedules meaning she would lose more pay from her work and it is even worse by train because she would need a hotel room in Washington DC both ways due to the train schedules and again the train would extend her travel time. I have checked out going to her place by both train and bus myself so yes I am sure my times and figures are correct.
Safe travels Dale

GLOBAL WARMING ... yep, I know there are arguments on both sidess but what I'm concerned about right now is LOCAL WARMING ... YIKES!

I think the average June temperature here (Northern Colorado) is in the 70's ... we've already had 5-6 days in the 90's and it's supposed to hit 100 in a couple of days ... what?, this ain't Phoenix!  lol  Can't wait to see my AC bill ... double lol.

Still pluggin' along with my Jewett folks on Wikitree.  Also tying to figure out the next steps with all the, now private (GDPR), folks that I've entered via the Canadian History Project ... Premiers, Mayors, Famous Folks, etc. ... Grrr.
by Bob Jewett G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Bob, as I understand it, except for children under the age of 13, if you are on a trusted list for the project you should be able to see the people who are showing as unlisted to the public at large.

I sent Abby and Eowyn an idea for a surname registry of PMs since there are names that are so large you are drilling through them trying to find someone who might be unlisted.  That it would give people a place to go to see who to contact as PMs.  They did not see the need for it because the person shows up in the surname search as Unlisted surname.PM but no other data.  They thought a One Name Study might be better for large surnames.  And members of the trusted list can see them.

So if members of a project are on the trusted list they should be able to see them.
I agree with you Bob and Laura on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Our high today is 89 (Near Lexington, KY). With the expected 69% humidity its too hot and muggy to be very active outside. Keep cool Bob, I feel for ya
Guess I shouldn't complain too much ... right now (5:30PM) it's 95 degrees but only 10% humidity ... that is a plus around here ...

Well I am getting here early again this weekend.  My dad is still getting stronger. But my mom said that she thinks the diahara is getting worse and smells worse. He doesn't want to work with the therapist. He just wants to lie, eat, sleep and  watch TV and that is all. That isn't good for him, He will still get weaker and end up with pneumonia. Mom says if he gets pneumonia there she will sue them. Because he not suppose to drink or have anything liquid with out Thicken because he aspirates and that causes pneumonia so he has to have Thicken any anything that is liquid like milk, soup and anything that is liquid anymore and till he dies. He has been taken 3 times a week to dialysis by ambulance because he is so weak.

Because of his dementia he lets people know that he doesn't like them. As my mom says he doesn't seem as the same man, husband and father.

He was in the hospital for 30 days but my mother says 25 days and he has been in the rehab for 2 weeks as this Monday and that is correct.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

Linda I feel for you and your family.   I lived through something similar with my Mom.  She became mean in how she interacted with people and it was really hard.  She was always angry and she could not do what she wanted to because she did not do the rehab she needed to do after falling and breaking her hip.  She was mad at everyone and everything because a lack of oxygen to the brain caused a personality shift.   I know what dealing with acute illness of a parent is like.  It is really hard when it changes personality to the point you no longer see them as the person they once were.  You and your family remain in my prayers.
I hope your weekend is nice and quiet Linda. Prayers said for your family.

Am late today. Done my family chat.

My sister has a serious photography hobby and she likes to enter online photography competitions as well as the monthly competitions for her local camera club. This month she was thrilled to have 2 of her photos win awards for the monthly challenge.

I have also finally figured out how that second match on my list of DNA matches at My Heritage, is related to me. She was (is?) my fathers first cousin, which makes her a 1C1R to me.  That matches the 660 cM we share.  My first, third, fourth and fifth DNA matches from My Heritage are all from my mothers side - and possibly related to the unknown grandfathers family.

Otherwise this has been a quiet week.

Although my sister did say that she was now interested in doing a DNA test, just to see what her ethnicity estimate is. When she saves up enough money and My Heritage has a sale on, I will let her know. She does not want to do the spitting so that cuts down our options.

In the meantime I am now adding the family of the second DNA match to Wikitree. They had 9 daughters!!! Can you imagine having 9 daughters and NO SONS!! LOL.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Nine daughters reminds me of a family profile I did of nine or ten daughters
and a hired man listed last.  He ended up marrying the oldest daughter.  I think that happened a lot of times.
FTDNA has a sale on  They use a cheek swap not spitting.
Yes Laura thanks. But I need to wait for my sister to actually SAVE up the money. She uses a debit card, not a credit card. So it will be a few months before she can do this. There is no hurry. Thanks for the notice anyway.
My apologies. There was ONE son. I just found a 10th child born as the youngest of the family. He wasn't mentioned in the mothers probate record so he may have died at a young age. I will have to investigate.
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Congrats to your sister Robynne! And wow.  Just wow. Nine daughters?!

Today is......

National Donald Duck Day is observed annually on June 9th.  This day commemorates the birthday of the funny animal cartoon character, Donald Duck. Donald made his first screen debut on June 9, 1934, in The Wise Little Hen.

Donald Duck usually wears a sailor suit with a cap and a black or red bow tie and is most famous for his semi-intelligible speech along with his mischievous and irritable personality

Donald Duck has appeared in more films than any other Disney character.   Donald was also declared in 2002 by TV Guide as one of the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all times.

It was in Donald’s second appearance in Orphan’s Benefit that he was introduced to his comic friend, Mickey Mouse.  Donald’s girlfriend, Daisy Duck, along with his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, were introduced shortly after that.

In addition to animation, Donald is also known for his appearance in comic books and newspaper comic strips.

One of Donald Duck’s famous sayings is “Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.”

HISTORY

National Donald Duck Day first proclaimed by LA Mayor Tom Bradley in 1984 on Donald’s 50th birthday. The world’s most famous duck gave the city a silver statue of himself as a gift in memory of the big day. He also toured the country leading up to the big Disney birthday party bash.

How to Celebrate

Donald Duck had some very specific characteristics, and celebrating Donald Duck day provides you with an opportunity to embrace your inner angry waterfowl. Dress in blue and gold to commemorate everyone’s favorite duck, and add just a splash of red to round it out. When people ask you questions, respond with the partially-legible quack that is Donald’s claim to fame and, whenever possible, fly into a comedic and harmless incoherent rage cussing out everything you loathe in a voice that no one can understand. People may look at you funny but, one of the great things about being Donald for a day is, you don’t have to care.

I have to tell my son about this one!! He's 27 and his name is Donald, His nieces and nephews call him "Uncle Duck" because he likes anything Donald Duckish...yea I know, my spell check says it's not a word, but it is if I say it is.

"Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck", Forever man has held a banner..High, high, high. High! Come along lets sing the song And join the jamberre!  M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-you-S-E!

Remember singing that when we were kids???

just like playing red light, green light etc. outside !!(http://www.gameskidsplay.net/games/sensing_games/rl_gl.htm )

Oh the songs we sang and the games we played, back in the 60's., and not on or with an IPad lol.

I LOVE Donald Duck. Mickey Mouse was just too perfect and too goody two shoes and UNREALISTIC for me. I like Donald because when he had a temper trantrum, he really let it rip!!And he was funny as well.
Dorothy, you are so good at finding these "National Day's"
I agree with Dean on this chat and other people on this chat too.

Happy Weekend Everybody!

Hot, humid weather in my neck of the woods has kept me in front of the air conditioner and busy on WikiTree. This week, I have been working mostly on Mason profiles for my Mason Name Study. I adopted quite a few unrelated profiles recently and many are unsourced. However, I have decided to try and work on my own line a bit here and I may need some help. My personal research is back to Edward Mason. I would really like to find enough sources to create a profile for him so I can list him as a brick wall. I have profiles made in my line back to his grandson, Anderson Wallace Mason, then I found and adopted his father, James, and his half brother, Rufus Morganton Mason. I have a lot of work to do with these, but I really want to get Edward on here as he is the first emigrant to North America in my Mason line. The sources should be out there, I'm just having a hard time finding them. I suspect this because I have found family trees with the information sounding specific enough to have come from somewhere. So, I'm going to post about him on G2G and see if fresh eyes can help. I am fascinated by Edward's story, and hope some good sources can be found. Allegedly, he was born about 1746 in England and was "shanghaied" from Liverpool about 1762 to Charleston, South Carolina. He was an sold as an indentured servant to the Rhea family in Augusta County. He served in the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War, possibly also at King's Mountain. He married Elizabeth Russell around 1770 in Wythe County, Virginia. They moved to North Carolina after the war, and from there to Monroe County, Tennessee. This all sounds like things I should be able to find sources for, but I don't seem to be looking in the right places, because I'm not finding anything. My dad was super excited when I found stories with the term "shanghaid" because he remembers his dad and grandpa talking about someone in the family experiencing this. If any of you lovely genealogists out there have any obscure sources or tips that may help with this dilemma, I would be very grateful.

Hi Sarah, welcome to the Weekend Chat!

Thank you for adopting those profiles. I hope that you find the sources you seek on your Mason line. What an interesting story about Edward!
Hi Sarah, I did a search on google books for "Edward Mason Virginia Line" and found a book from 1835 called "Report from the Secretary of War", presumably edited from the United States War Department. There is a table which I don't really understand but maybe one of you can read that stuff properly, I'm gonna copy it over here:

Name: Edward Mason

Rank: Private

Annual Allowance: 26 66

Sums Received: 65 76

Description Of Service: Virginia Line

When Placed On This Pension Roll: Sep 18, 1833

Commencement Of Pension: Mar 4, 1831

Age: 87

Laws Under Which They Were Formerly Inscribed On The Pension Roll; And Remarks: Died Aug 22, 1833

Here is the link to the book: https://books.google.de/books?id=MzEOwuN2cs0C&pg=RA7-PA76&dq=edward+mason+virginia+line&hl=de&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHyZX3nMfbAhUIB8AKHdHDAPIQ6AEIKDAA#v=onepage&q=edward%20mason%20virginia%20line&f=false

His age fits to your Edward Mason, so I THINK that could be your guy.
I agree this does look like him. I'm not good with the tables, either. Thank you, Jelena! And thank you, Mindy, for your response as well.
Welcome to the Weekend chat Jelena. And thank you for looking for information for Sarah!
Sarah,
You may want to enter Edward Mason and the facts you know about him in a separate question in G2G.  He may be lost to some readers who aren't
following long columns and just skim looking for interesting questions.
Sarah I will look to see if I can find anything on him.   It might be tomorrow or the next day but I will get the info to you should I find anything.  Send me a private message and your direct email so I can send you anything I find and download.  I have access to some obscure non pubic records from that time period.  (These are not the glass maker archives which I also have).

Yes there should be records.
I agree with Mindy about welcome to the WikiTree Weekend chat Sarah and Jelena. And I also agree with everyone on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Thank you very much, Laura. I will send you a message.

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE DAY

On June 9th of each year, National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day is observed.  A tart vegetable, rhubarb is often paired with sweet fruits making for a delicious dessert.

Around the country, rhubarb is a perennial favorite for home gardens. One of the first fruits of their labors, gardeners begin to harvest rhubarb in the middle of May and early June, and it finds its way into desserts and preserves.  Since it takes on the flavor of the fruit or vegetable it is paired with, it is an excellent compliment to many recipes.

Not only is rhubarb known for making deliciously baked goods and satisfying the hankering for something from the garden early in the season, but it also has many other qualities.  Rub a cut stalk of rhubarb over a burnt skillet and let the high oleic acid content do the work.  It’s been a primary ingredient in many cleansers for over a 100 years.

Rhubarb is so high in oleic acid, in fact, the leaves are toxic to humans.  The stalks, however, are a consumable, rich and healthful source of oleic acid. The benefits of enjoying rhubarb could help reduce blood pressure, increase your body’s ability to burn fat and generate brain myelin. Now, that’s a reason to celebrate National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day!

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Oooh, yum, yum, yummy. I have plans to start a rhubarb patch in my garden. I love the sweet/tart flavor!
I haven't had that in ages - thank you for posting Dorothy! Hmmm never tried cleaning a skillet with it.

Oh, I love rhubarb pie! Not so much the ones with strawberries added. When I was young, my aunt would make rhubarb sauce, basically the pie filling without the pie. Unfortunately, I now live where it is not cold enough to grow my own.

Did you know that rhubarb is also called pie plant. With good reason.

I had heard in large amounts it is toxic... I always thought that was a reference to not eat too much pie!  Turns out it is the rhubarb!

Strawberry rhubarb pie day is three days overdue for me.  I just ate the last piece of pie I made a few days ago.  One pie for a divorced son with two teenaged boys in the house; one pie for a neighbor with mild alzheimers disease who loves rhubarb pie but a wife who can't make it; and frozen rhubarb to make a pie later for a 94 year old friend in skilled nursing care that just had a back operation and can't handle a pie right now.  Plus mine to enjoy, a very busy oven that day.
I just knocked five more unsourced DeCoursey profiles out of the pile and left a note for a profile manager to add the possibility of more from
all of the names on a FAG memorial.
The farmers are busy making grass silage and there are huge dump
trucks rolling by, full of fresh cut first cutting grass/hay.  It smells so nice
at that stage.  But stinks when it ferments and the pile is opened for feeding.
by Beulah Cramer G2G6 Pilot (567k points)
How sweet of you Beulah. I'm sure they all loved the pies! Welcome to the Weekend Chat.
Beulah my great aunt who I lived with for the first 6 years of my life (along with my parents, grandparents and aunt) was the cook in the family and my best friend as a toddler.  She played games with me and taught me to cook.  She used to make a wonderful strawberry rhubarb pie.  Have not had one in decades.  We make pies but my sons and husband are not rhubarb fans... they like pecan, cherry, and apple and once in a while I make a Baileys and Chocolate pie.  The adults like that a lot...  During these hot months I make a lot of frozen yogurt pies.

Hey everyone! Sitting here bored at work waiting for 7p to come so I can head home! :-)

Last three days at work I’ve been having to do the walking route around the hospital. Wednesday I clocked in 6.9 miles before bed. Thurs gave me 7 miles before bed. Yesterday was 6.4 miles. I weighed myself yesterday to see if I lost any weight since last Sat & yup! 3 lbs!! LoL

Anyways, glad to be taking it easy today as I’d hate to immediately undo all the hard work that massage chair put into my back during my pedicure. LoL
by Charlotte Shockey G2G6 Pilot (981k points)
Hi Charlotte. Congrats on getting those miles in! Hopefully you get a day off tomorrow so you can relax all of those muscles. You seem to have it right - massage and a pedi :D

Welcome to the Weekend Chat!
Yes, off tomorrow except for working on the quilt. Then back to the walking route again Monday and praying not Tues, too. LoL
I'd love to see the quilt when you get it done! Good luck with your Monday walk.
Well I did make another Free Space page for it once it's done. :) So I'll definitely post the link when it's done. :)
I went ahead and updated and made it public. Plan to add finished photos later. :)

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Shockey_Quilt_2017-2018
What a great idea! I love the blocks. Can't wait to see the finished product Charlotte!
I am not one who uses needles of any kind so quilting is not something I have ever done.  But can look at the finished product and admire it.  I inherited a number of them made in the 1800s into the 1920s.  Some needed repair and I have a friend who is an avid quilters.  She was thrilled she said to fix them.  She made her own dye to match the border where a small piece was frayed and needed to be replaced.  She told me a lot about the quilts, what techniques were used and which ones were more valuable if ever sold.  (Which they won't be they have been gifted to daughterinalws and granddaughters besides the ones I kept).

I never knew there was so much to learn about quilts!  Thanks for sharing!
Thanks to you both! :) This is our second year of doing the quilts to raffle at the reunion.

Laura I mainly machine quilt. The only time a needle may come into play is doing the binding. :)
My mom and aunt were avid about sewing.  When my Mom died I donated some very expensive sewing machines to a neighbor who makes clothes for patients at the local Shriners Hospital.  She was thrilled because they could handle large pieces of material and even sewed leather and thick materials.

Mom and my aunt also made patterns so I also donated sewing items used to make patterns.  I figured someone who could use them should have them.

She was my parents neighbor for 56 years so really more like a member of the family and I invited her to pick anything she wanted from the house after my sons and their families were done.  Mom had 3 sewing machines and this lady was thrilled to get them because she could have people over while they worked and chatted making clothes, toys, bags and others things for the children.  Kind of like the old time sewing circles.  Which also was good for her in giving her something to do and be able to work with others, like we collaborate here!

1 of them was a commercial machine the other 2 high end machines.  And there was also a 4th one that was the old pedal style machine that still worked in an antique wood cabinet.  She put that in her living room by the front window and said she loves the exercise it gives her!

I counted that not as a sewing machine but as a conversation piece!

My mom inherited her grandmother old pedal style machine in an antique wood cabinet when her dad died in 1978. There a picture on a free space page that I fixed for Leonard's family heirlooms. Here is the link to the free apace page of Leonard's family heirlooms:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Leonards_Family_heirlooms

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

Yep that is a lot like the one I gave to the neighbor.
