I am sort of back to normal after two weeks of break neck speed working on closing a company before large yearly bills came due. As you noticed, my tips today deal with the concept of change. Closing our spice company is a big change for me. It is sad in many ways but it also opens up new possibilities for me. This decision was not made easily or lightly, but it was based on health issues both my business partner and her family and my family have been dealing with for a while. It became obvious we could not continue in the way that made sense for our clients or for ourselves.

One of the things this does is opens me up to have more time to help in other ways. So I am going to be off the chat most of tomorrow as I help one of the adoptees as part of the Adoption Angels Project https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Adoption_Angels

This person is travelling to the state I live in and we are meeting to do some on the ground in the location research. So you will be in good hands as Dorothy, Chris, Charlotte, Mindy, and Robynne all check in from time to time on Saturday. Each has hosted a chat and has our nifty guest host sticker!

So if you are looking for something to do, consider volunteering to be an Adoption Angel. We do have mentors who will help you learn how to help adoptees with their quests. We want to help as many adoptees as we can and there is a waiting list so we could really use some more Angels. This week I loaded up a few of my grandfather's siblings. Then went browsing for low-hanging fruit in the Unsourced grove. I ran across some Tweeds and immediately thought of Boss Tweed (Tweed-1). Sure enough, they were his children. So I found some sources for each, and added two children previously left behind. I even discovered three Tweed daughters at their private school in 1860.

Otherwise, we're enjoying the yin and yang of warm dry spring weather in NM. It's spectacular weather, but it's warm and dry. Big fires here and there. 20-30% chance of thunderstorms this weekend. That's terrific if it actually rains, but spring thunderstorms here sometimes produce lightning with no rain reaching the ground. White knuckle time until the monsoon arrives.

Also, I'm reading a Lee Child novel. It's affecting my writing style.

Yes there are a variety of people who are volunteers on WikiTree who watch over our tree in various ways. Sometimes I am sure people do feel stalked like Herb joked. Or they feel happy that someone read something they wrote and stopped to answer them even if it was a quick note.

WikiTree is about helping and collaborating and sometimes that can fly in the face of someone who likes to do things more on their own.

So I made up some rules for myself to help me deal with the various thins we can run into on a large public forum like WikiTree

1. Be nice as it says in the Honor Code. That means don't slam people even if you are in the right to do it ... like when someone posts something snarky directed at you instead of debating a topic. Personal attacks are not the order of the day.

2. Debate an issue. But don't get emotionally caught up in it. People have many different opinions and disagreements will happen. Be respectful and you may just come to a point where you agree to disagree

3. We all communicate with different styles and sometimes a person's style of writing or expressing frustration can rub you the wrong way... remember electronic communication lacks facial expression or voice inflection. Read the same line twice with different tone and you get a different idea... Opt to go to a helpful tone first.

4. If you think someone has misunderstood what you have said, restate it or just drop it... depends on how strongly you feel about it.

5. We can all put our foot in our mouth and some of us can get both feet in... so let's just give everyone a break and take a deep breath before responding.

6. Never give a down vote because they mean absolutely nothing to the person getting one. They don't know what they said that got downvoted unless they only posted one thing in all of G2G. They have no idea who gave it. They don't even know they got one unless they checked their G2G profile. Talk about something totally useless. So ignore them.

7. So you got some down votes and someone wants to take an anonymous pot shot... ignore it and remember that "if you have never been laughed at or picked on as such it doesn't mean your perfect it just means you have not communicated as much."

I have been trying to slow down on WikiTree for some time now. I have been, and continue to, reducing my watchlist to give me some breathing room while keeping those profiles of relative's and others who are important to me on the list. I have been setting the privacy levels to be more Open if not totally Open as well. My problem is that most every profile I look at I am related to. I have also taken some time to work on a program to help reduce my weight, and I am happy to say that it is working slowly. I may also be spending more time helping the radio club I belong to in a more active way. Yes I know I spend a lot of time with that already but there is the possibility that by years end I may be an officer of the club, but that is a very long story. I have edited every profile on my watchlist since Sep 22, 2017 so I have been taking a little more time with some of the profiles I work on now. There is always more to do with them but a lot of the profiles on my watchlist are still unsourced and do not even have that template on them so I try to find at least one source for those before I move on. Yes I add the template if I can not find a source but that is very rare.

Happy Weekend everyone! I spent my Wiki time this week working on my grandfather's bunch, the Richardsons. I got a copy of "the Richardson book" at the most recent family reunion - and although we all know about those "folk histories of the family" and how inaccurate they can be - it is a good place to START! To be honest I think this kind of straight "data entry" can be a bit dull - but in a soothing way I guess! Kind of like knitting!

I also unplugged one dead end this week. A cousin who went to Tennessee early on - it turns out that "family history" had his mother's maiden name completely wrong. I was wondering why she just sort of came out of nowhere - well - she has been tracked down and put in her right place - and just goes to show you - don't believe everything your family tells you! Or at least, verify it!

I am also COMPLETELY caught up on photo scanning and upload. All pics from not one but TWO cousins have been input - probably around 75 to 100? This is good news because I am going back soon to the home town and I have a line on another source of pics. SO I needed to get the "backlog" cleared out and now I have.

I know what you mean about the photo scanning. My mother in law passed away about a month ago (she was 94 and in fairly good health until a few months before she passed) and my husband inherited ALL of the family photos. When we returned home I started scanning an uploading them but there are so many I'm not sure I'll ever finish. My father in law loved photography and his favorite subject was Mom. I sorted most of them and there were 132 of just her. The think I mostly wonder about is what to do with all the people we don't know. Since Mom passed I can no longer ask her who these people are. I'd love to be able to post some of these somewhere so they can be identified. Wouldn't these be considered orphan photos?

So WikiTree has taken me off on a couple of genealogy tangents. Thanks to Laura's comment on my post last week, I decided to create a profile for my husband's great grandfather Osson Perry Knight. He was pretty interesting. He volunteered to fight in the Civil War at age 41 and was wounded at the second Battle of Bull Run and at Gettysburg, when he was captured. After spending time as a POW, he was released, rejoined, and was captured again. He returned to Virginia after the war where, at age 51, he married 18 year old Emma Jeter and fathered 9 children. Research on his parents and siblings should be lots of fun, and lots of work. Osson had 10 siblings, 8 half siblings, and 6 step-siblings. There is a 300 page privately published book from a 2001 family reunion that is a start. Neither Osson nor Emma are connected to the larger tree ...yet...

The other tangent started from the 52 Ancestor Weekly challenge of "chapel". My great great grandmother is a brick wall; all that I know about her ancestors/family are that she and her brother the Rev Nathaniel Salisbury were early members of a church formed about 1830. So I created a profile for Nathaniel. I learned that his name may have be Salsbury (about a 50-50 split on the spelling) and that there were no churches in the area when he converted to Methodism about 1816. He was a circuit preacher for 11 years (which makes genealogy just so much fun), and eventually became the presiding elder for the Methodist Episcopal Church in northern New York. So all that work and still no clues on his parents...and he is not yet connected to the larger tree.

Bob, as I understand it, except for children under the age of 13, if you are on a trusted list for the project you should be able to see the people who are showing as unlisted to the public at large.

I sent Abby and Eowyn an idea for a surname registry of PMs since there are names that are so large you are drilling through them trying to find someone who might be unlisted. That it would give people a place to go to see who to contact as PMs. They did not see the need for it because the person shows up in the surname search as Unlisted surname.PM but no other data. They thought a One Name Study might be better for large surnames. And members of the trusted list can see them.

So if members of a project are on the trusted list they should be able to see them.

Well I am getting here early again this weekend. My dad is still getting stronger. But my mom said that she thinks the diahara is getting worse and smells worse. He doesn't want to work with the therapist. He just wants to lie, eat, sleep and watch TV and that is all. That isn't good for him, He will still get weaker and end up with pneumonia. Mom says if he gets pneumonia there she will sue them. Because he not suppose to drink or have anything liquid with out Thicken because he aspirates and that causes pneumonia so he has to have Thicken any anything that is liquid like milk, soup and anything that is liquid anymore and till he dies. He has been taken 3 times a week to dialysis by ambulance because he is so weak.

Because of his dementia he lets people know that he doesn't like them. As my mom says he doesn't seem as the same man, husband and father.

He was in the hospital for 30 days but my mother says 25 days and he has been in the rehab for 2 weeks as this Monday and that is correct.

Am late today. Done my family chat.

My sister has a serious photography hobby and she likes to enter online photography competitions as well as the monthly competitions for her local camera club. This month she was thrilled to have 2 of her photos win awards for the monthly challenge.

I have also finally figured out how that second match on my list of DNA matches at My Heritage, is related to me. She was (is?) my fathers first cousin, which makes her a 1C1R to me. That matches the 660 cM we share. My first, third, fourth and fifth DNA matches from My Heritage are all from my mothers side - and possibly related to the unknown grandfathers family.

Otherwise this has been a quiet week.

Although my sister did say that she was now interested in doing a DNA test, just to see what her ethnicity estimate is. When she saves up enough money and My Heritage has a sale on, I will let her know. She does not want to do the spitting so that cuts down our options.

In the meantime I am now adding the family of the second DNA match to Wikitree. They had 9 daughters!!! Can you imagine having 9 daughters and NO SONS!! LOL.

National Donald Duck Day is observed annually on June 9th. This day commemorates the birthday of the funny animal cartoon character, Donald Duck. Donald made his first screen debut on June 9, 1934, in The Wise Little Hen.

Donald Duck usually wears a sailor suit with a cap and a black or red bow tie and is most famous for his semi-intelligible speech along with his mischievous and irritable personality

Happy Weekend Everybody!

Hot, humid weather in my neck of the woods has kept me in front of the air conditioner and busy on WikiTree. This week, I have been working mostly on Mason profiles for my Mason Name Study. I adopted quite a few unrelated profiles recently and many are unsourced. However, I have decided to try and work on my own line a bit here and I may need some help. My personal research is back to Edward Mason. I would really like to find enough sources to create a profile for him so I can list him as a brick wall. I have profiles made in my line back to his grandson, Anderson Wallace Mason, then I found and adopted his father, James, and his half brother, Rufus Morganton Mason. I have a lot of work to do with these, but I really want to get Edward on here as he is the first emigrant to North America in my Mason line. The sources should be out there, I'm just having a hard time finding them. I suspect this because I have found family trees with the information sounding specific enough to have come from somewhere. So, I'm going to post about him on G2G and see if fresh eyes can help. I am fascinated by Edward's story, and hope some good sources can be found. Allegedly, he was born about 1746 in England and was "shanghaied" from Liverpool about 1762 to Charleston, South Carolina. He was an sold as an indentured servant to the Rhea family in Augusta County. He served in the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War, possibly also at King's Mountain. He married Elizabeth Russell around 1770 in Wythe County, Virginia. They moved to North Carolina after the war, and from there to Monroe County, Tennessee. This all sounds like things I should be able to find sources for, but I don't seem to be looking in the right places, because I'm not finding anything. My dad was super excited when I found stories with the term "shanghaid" because he remembers his dad and grandpa talking about someone in the family experiencing this. If any of you lovely genealogists out there have any obscure sources or tips that may help with this dilemma, I would be very grateful.

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE DAY

On June 9th of each year, National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day is observed. A tart vegetable, rhubarb is often paired with sweet fruits making for a delicious dessert.

Around the country, rhubarb is a perennial favorite for home gardens. One of the first fruits of their labors, gardeners begin to harvest rhubarb in the middle of May and early June, and it finds its way into desserts and preserves. Since it takes on the flavor of the fruit or vegetable it is paired with, it is an excellent compliment to many recipes.

Not only is rhubarb known for making deliciously baked goods and satisfying the hankering for something from the garden early in the season, but it also has many other qualities. Rub a cut stalk of rhubarb over a burnt skillet and let the high oleic acid content do the work. It’s been a primary ingredient in many cleansers for over a 100 years.

Rhubarb is so high in oleic acid, in fact, the leaves are toxic to humans. The stalks, however, are a consumable, rich and healthful source of oleic acid. The benefits of enjoying rhubarb could help reduce blood pressure, increase your body’s ability to burn fat and generate brain myelin. Strawberry rhubarb pie day is three days overdue for me. I just ate the last piece of pie I made a few days ago. One pie for a divorced son with two teenaged boys in the house; one pie for a neighbor with mild alzheimers disease who loves rhubarb pie but a wife who can't make it; and frozen rhubarb to make a pie later for a 94 year old friend in skilled nursing care that just had a back operation and can't handle a pie right now. Plus mine to enjoy, a very busy oven that day.
I just knocked five more unsourced DeCoursey profiles out of the pile and left a note for a profile manager to add the possibility of more from
all of the names on a FAG memorial.
The farmers are busy making grass silage and there are huge dump
trucks rolling by, full of fresh cut first cutting grass/hay. It smells so nice
at that stage. But stinks when it ferments and the pile is opened for feeding.

I am not one who uses needles of any kind so quilting is not something I have ever done. But can look at the finished product and admire it. I inherited a number of them made in the 1800s into the 1920s. Some needed repair and I have a friend who is an avid quilters. She was thrilled she said to fix them. She made her own dye to match the border where a small piece was frayed and needed to be replaced. She told me a lot about the quilts, what techniques were used and which ones were more valuable if ever sold. (Which they won't be they have been gifted to daughterinalws and granddaughters besides the ones I kept).

I never knew there was so much to learn about quilts! Thanks for sharing!

My mom and aunt were avid about sewing. When my Mom died I donated some very expensive sewing machines to a neighbor who makes clothes for patients at the local Shriners Hospital. She was thrilled because they could handle large pieces of material and even sewed leather and thick materials.

Mom and my aunt also made patterns so I also donated sewing items used to make patterns. I figured someone who could use them should have them.

She was my parents neighbor for 56 years so really more like a member of the family and I invited her to pick anything she wanted from the house after my sons and their families were done. Mom had 3 sewing machines and this lady was thrilled to get them because she could have people over while they worked and chatted making clothes, toys, bags and others things for the children. Kind of like the old time sewing circles. Which also was good for her in giving her something to do and be able to work with others, like we collaborate here!

1 of them was a commercial machine the other 2 high end machines. And there was also a 4th one that was the old pedal style machine that still worked in an antique wood cabinet. She put that in her living room by the front window and said she loves the exercise it gives her!

I counted that not as a sewing machine but as a conversation piece!
