Who is the Mother of Esra and Naomi Killerby (1650s: Leeds)?

  • Zechary Killerby had two children Esra (1653: Leeds) and Naomi (1655 - 1656: Leeds). No mother is mentioned on the christening and burial records, and no marriage record has been found.

  • But Zechary has one other child Grace (1650 - 1656: Leeds). Her burial record lists her father as Zechary Killerby, her surname as Killerby, and that she was "base born". This record is on FreeReg.

  • I searched for Graces who were born in Leeds between 1636 and 1656, and found no Grace Killerby, but three "base born" children, two had different fathers to Zechary, but one, Grace Bedford, whose record only mentions her mother Grace Bedford.

  • Can I assume Grace Bedford and Grace Killerby are the same "base born" child?
  • Does the change in surname, but note of illegitimacy mean anything?
  • Is it possible it means that Zechary and Grace later married, and had two legitimate children?

Actually Grace's burial reads "Grace a base child of Zachary Killerby and  ".

I think it is extremely likely, but you can't assume it without real evidence.
