Y-DNA might answer the question with sufficient test takers in each surname. You would need to verify up to the generation of the name change and then verify that a line before the name change matches. So you could verify but it may not be simple.

You might be able to get an idea if the surname that gets matched is the one on the other side of the name change but you would also have to verify that it is the correct family.
