How do I make a new Cemetery category?

+11 votes
I read about making a new cemetery category but I don't actually know how to do it.  I know the new cemetery needs to be linked to the category tree.  I put the new cemetery category on the profile page.

Particularly, Carlesta Armstrong is buried at Palestine Cemetery in Palestine, Darke County, Ohio.  Palestine Cemetery doesn't have a category yet.  I found the Darke County Cemeteries page here .  I see I can edit the page which brings up the text box that is mentioned in the instructions.  But then what?

I would love step by step instructions.  Thanks!!!

From Natalie's answer -- but to help anyone else that is trying to do this:

1.  Add the new category on the profile. (You have already checked to make sure it is not already a category by using the category button above the biography.)  Format it correctly according to the guidelines.  In Carlesta Armstrong's case it was [[Category: Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Ohio]]

2.  Click on the red category you just made -- In Carlesta Armstrong's example it was [[Category: Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Ohio]].

3.  You will see a text-edit box:  Add the categories: [[Category: County, State, Cemeteries]]  AND [[Category: City/Town, State]]  to the text-edit box.  Preview if you want.  Save your work.

Now, pat yourself on the back!

Couldn't have explained it better myself Kathy and I add cemeteries all the time.  Guess I'm a little OCD on that.  LOL  But I feel adding the cemetery category is an excellent way to link non related folks in that community.

Also. it is good to add any data you may have about the cemetery in the edit box as well.  Also a link to a site that has data on the cemetery if known.

Please take a look at it now Kathy by clicking on the category in Calesta's Profile.  Here I added data from Find A Grave.

Also, use this link to make sure someone hasn't already create a Category, but didn't follow the directions as well.  Say they added the county name when they really didn't need to.  Just always good to check I have discovered.  You can drill down from it on a state by state then county basis.
Thanks so much, LJ.  I really like how this is part of my Wiki-Tool belt.  Definitely good to check the category to see what's there first.  Thanks for the extra info about how to add data on the cemetery.

When I follow your steps I get this: The action you have requested is limited to users in the group Supervisors.

You forgot to put in Category: at the beginning.  We have all done that.  Take a look now.

Anyone who says they never did that themselves is not fessing up.  LOL

I reviewed it and it "appears" to be correct...

[[Category: Saint Matthew Cemetery, Veblen, South Dakota]]
I see that you added it... thank you so much.  These mistakes are so simple but if it's not done right, it fails.  ugh.
Category is very exacting.  I had one that drove me nuts with the red error syndrome until I realized I had double spaced between the city and the state.  You want to talk about being upset!!!!!  LOL  I made up new words for that one. wink, wink

Also, on Carlesta's profile, you can click the red Palestine Cemetery category and add [[Category: Darke County, Ohio, Cemeteries]] and [[Category: Palestine, Ohio]] to the category edit box and save it.

Natalie -- it's your "also comment" that was the big help.  Thank you!  Got it.
I link the space page hoping you might bookmark it for future use! :-)

You're welcome, Kathy.
